    Urban landscape survey in Italy and the Mediterranean

    Field survey has been making a major contribution to our understanding of the rural landscapes of the Mediterranean for nearly forty years. During that time the techniques used to map ancient settlement patterns have grown in sophistication from being a process of simply identifying sites in the landscape, to one which provided nuanced understandings of their layouts, chronologies and contexts. This has led to a revolution in how archaeologists approach urban sites, with survey techniques being used increasingly often to generate a plan of a town site prior to excavation as a way of ensuring that the excavation can be used to address site-specific questions in a way that had not been possible before. Most recently, research has begun to reveal the advantages of integrating a range of different non-destructive techniques on urban sites. In combination with exciting new computer-based means of data visualization, all of this work means that it is now possible to virtually reconstruct a buried town within a relatively short space of time, as opposed to the old and destructive excavation-centered approach that could take generations. Unsurprisingly these advances are starting to make a very important understanding to urbanism in general and the Roman Empire in particular. Urban Landscape Survey in Italy and the Mediterranean builds upon all these new developments and is one of the first publications to focus exclusively upon the contribution of survey techniques to our understanding of ancient towns. It addresses methodology led enquiry into the nature of urban settlements primarily in Italy, but also in Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Portugal and Spain. The twenty-two papers from leading specialists in the field focus on two underlying themes. The first deals with the characterization of urban sites and draws upon a wide range of case studies. These range from key protohistoric centres in central and south Italy, to towns that epitomise the contradictions of cultural change under Rome, such as Paestum, Aquinum and Sagalassos, to Roman centres such as Teano, Suasa and Ammaia. The second theme is inter-urban relationships, looking in particular at wider urbanized landscapes in Italy. The fascinating selection of recent and on-going projects presented here significantly moves the limits of our current knowledge about ancient towns

    Portus in its Mediterranean context

    This paper is a first tentative step in the relationship between Roman Mediterranean ports. In particular, it draws together evidence from the ports of Rome and two provincial ports. Hispalis (Seville) and Lepcis Magna were chosen for preliminary analysis since they were especially important to Rome as sources of large quantities of olive oil during the 2nd century AD. Attention is drawn to better understanding what current evidence for the improvement of infrastructure at the ports of Rome and in the provinces can tell us about (1) the increased commercial capacity of ports in the Mediterranean, (2) the degree of coordinated planning by the state, (3) the volume of shipping passing between ports, and (4) economic integration across the Mediterranean

    Management options for pregnant feedlot heifers

    Heifers that were 167 days pregnant when slaughtered gained faster and more efficiently than open heifers, or heifers that had been aborted with a prostaglandin analog at 83 or 138 days, unless the slaughter weight was adjusted for the 1.7% lower carcass yield (dressing %). When the slaughter weights for all these management options were adjusted using the carcass yield of open heifers, there was no difference in gain except for the depressed performance associated with late abortions. However, open heifers were 6.7% more efficient than heifers pregnant when slaughtered. Heifers aborted at 138 days had substantially reduced gains and feed conversion. These results indicate that because of increased carcass yield, packers can afford to pay a premium for heifers that are open or have been aborted during the first trimester. Unless a premium is paid for open heifers, pregnant heifers (provided they are sold before calving) sold on a live weight basis might be more profitable because of the apparent increased gain and efficiency

    Evaluating Gismondi's Representation of Portus, the Port of Imperial Rome

    [EN] This paper introduces the Portus Project, an inter-disciplinary collaborative fieldwork project focussed on the ancient port of Rome. It demonstrates the use that is being made of a plaster model of the port produced by Italo Gismondi in 1937, initially as a means for focussing re-evaluations of the various illustrative and other data available relating to the port’s topography, and then as a source for background and comparative digital geometric data within the project’s work to remodel the entire site. The Portus Project employs three-dimensional computer graphics throughout the data gathering, analysis, modelling and representation phases and the paper considers the role that Gismondi’s model is playing in the development and evaluation of such a process.The Portus Project is directed by Simon Keay, and funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici di Ostia Antica, the University of Southampton, the British School at Rome and the University of Cambridge.     The Canale di Comunicazione Traverso in Portus: the Roman sea harbour under river influence (Tiber delta, Italy)

    Portus was Rome’s maritime port during the Roman Empire. In AD 42, the harbour location was selected about 3 km north of Ostia, along the Tyrrhenian coast, on the margin of the Tiber River. Portus and its maritime façade are well known, however the fluvial aspects of Portus are poorly documented. How did Roman engineers preserve a continuous waterway from the basins of Portus to the Tiber River without accelerating siltation inside the harbour? Were their choices efficient? The present Canale di Comunicazione Traverso is the only canal attested to link the Tiber River and the harbour basins. The objective of this work is to analyse the Canale Traverso sediments infill in order to establish the role of this canal in relation to the infill deposits of the harbour basins and to define the functions of the canal. This study is based primarily on a reinterpretation of the available archaeological data, as well as mainly on sedimentological analysis and the interpretation of the Passega diagram. A Passega diagram is presented for understanding the deposit processes for the harbour environments at the entrance to the Trajanic basin (TR-XIV). This diagram is compared to the Passega diagram of the Canale Traverso (CT-1) which is characterised by a stronger influence of the Tiber River. This study concludes that the Canale Traverso was a canal that was well protected from the influence of the Tiber River, with the exception of occasional flooding. Also, this paper presents the patterns of sedimentation at Portus and allows us to define the use of the canal and the maintenance procedure

    Definition of a new approach in ancient harbor geoarchaeology: geochemistry and ostracod analyses at Portus (Tiber delta, central Italy)

    International audiencePortus constituted the harbour complex of imperial Rome from the 1st century AD onward. Located in a deltaic environment, the harbour was subject to influences of the Tyrrhenian marine environment and of the fluvial waters of the Tiber River. Such complex sedimentary processes registered also rapid environ-mental changes. Our research is based on the study of a sediment core (TR14) drilled in the access channel of the hexagonal basin of Trajan (Fig. 1). The goal of our study is the reconstruction the palaeo-environmental dynamics of the water column of the harbour according to a geochemical and an ostra-codological approach. The analysis of the ostracod assemblage has evidenced several palaeo-environmental phases. These phases could be identified through the autoeco-logical analysis of the 25 recognised taxa and their classification in four eco-logical groups (MAZZINI et al., 2011). The results obtained present a succession of four environments, defined by variations in salinity and oxygenation. From the bottom to a depth of 643 cm, the environment was a marine to brackish lagoon influenced by strong marine inputs as evidenced by the vic-ariance of Cyprideis torosa and Pontocythere turbida. P. turbida is a typical phy-tal ostracod often found together with Posidonia oceanica remains. From 600 to 454 cm the coastal marine environment becomes more stable. This could be linked to the establishment of the harbour activities and maintenance. The sta-bility of the environment is still evident in the subsequent group, from 435 to 305 cm, characterised by the dominance of C. torosa and the lack of any fresh-water influence. The increase in salinity could be related to evaporative effects on a closed body of water. From 300 cm the freshwater input becomes clear and constant although the influence of the close sea/brackish body of water is still noticeable. In the last metres a typical freshwater assemblage is represent-ed, dominated by truly freshwater taxa (Candona sp. and Pseudocandona marchica), evidence for the occurrence of a freshwater marsh. The geochemical results were analysed by Principal Components Analy-sis (PCA). The samples were assembled in several groups based on a Hierar-chical Ascendant Classification (cluster analysis). Through PCA analysis, the geochemical and ostracological results of the "functional" harbour unit (800-300 cm) were combined. The different elements recorded in the geochemical analysis are distributed according to the main ostracod assemblages (from fresh water to brackish water and sea water). These elements have been grouped according to the model proposed by SAGEMAN & LYONS (2003). An evolution of these deposits in three stages is proposed. While the fluvial envi-ronments were quite well oxygenated, the harbour environment was more characterised by an increasing anoxia of the water column as it was observed by ELMALEH et al. (2012) in the harbor of Tyre. In a second phase, the varia-tions in salinity distinguished the nature of the fluvial environments and the degree of openness to the sea of the harbour environment.     Steroid metabolism in cnidarians : insights from Nematostella vectensis

While cnidarians contain a diverse complement of steroids, sterols, and other lipid metabolites, relatively little is known of the endogenous steroid metabolism or function in cnidarian tissues. Incubations of cnidarian tissues with steroid substrates have indicated the presence of steroid metabolizing enzymes, particularly enzymes with 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17β-HSD) activity. Through analysis of the genome of the starlet sea anemone, Nematostella vectensis, we identified a suite of genes in the short chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) superfamily including homologs of genes that metabolize steroids in other animals. A more detailed analysis of Hsd17b4 revealed complex evolutionary relationships, apparent intron loss in several taxa, and predominantly adult expression in N. vectensis.     Corporate Governance for Sustainability

    The current model of corporate governance needs reform. There is mounting evidence that the practices of shareholder primacy drive company directors and executives to adopt the same short time horizon as financial markets. Pressure to meet the demands of the financial markets drives stock buybacks, excessive dividends and a failure to invest in productive capabilities. The result is a ‘tragedy of the horizon’, with corporations and their shareholders failing to consider environmental, social or even their own, long-term, economic sustainability. With less than a decade left to address the threat of climate change, and with consensus emerging that businesses need to be held accountable for their contribution, it is time to act and reform corporate governance in the EU. The statement puts forward specific recommendations to clarify the obligations of company boards and directors and make corporate governance practice significantly more sustainable and focused on the long term
