    Wood-based beams strengthened with FRP laminates: improved performance with pre-stressed systems

    Using bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates for strengthening wooden structural members has been shown to be an effective and economical method. In this paper, properties of suitable FRP materials, adhesives and two ways of strengthening beams exposed to bending moment are presented. Passive or slack reinforcement is one way of strengthening. The most effective way of such a strengthening was to place reinforcement laminates on both tension and compression side of the beam. However, the FRP material is only partially utilised. The second way is to apply pre-stressing in FRP materials prior to bonding to tension side of flexural members and this way was shown to provide the most effective utilisation of these materials. The state of the art of such a strengthening and various methods are discussed. Increasing the load-bearing capacity, introducing a pre-cambering effect and thus improving serviceability which often governs the design and reducing the amount of FRP reinforcement needed are some of the main advantages. A recent development on how to avoid the requirement for anchoring the laminates at the end of the beams to avoid premature debonding is shown, and the advantage of such a system is described

    A YAC contig in Xp21 containing the adrenal hypoplasia congenita and glycerol kinase deficiency genes

    The gene loci for adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC) and glycerol kinase deficiency (GK) map in Xp21 distal to Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), and proximal to DXS28 (C7), by analysis of patient deletions. We have constructed a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) contig encompassing a 1.2 Mb region extending distally from DMD, and containing DXS708 (JC-1), the distal junction clone of a patient with GK and DMD. A pulsed-field gel electrophoresis map of the YAC contig identified 3 potential CpG islands. Whole YAC hybridization identified cosmids both for construction of cosmid contigs, and isolation of single copy probes. Thirteen new single copy probes and DXS28 and DXS708 were hybridized on a panel of patients; the deletion mapping indicates that the YAC contig contains both GK and at least part of AHC, and together with the physical map defines a GK critical region of 50-250 kb. In one AHC patient with a cytogenetically detectable deletion we used the new probes to characterize a complex double deletion. Non-overlapping deletions observed in other unrelated AHC patients indicate that the AHC gene is large, extending over at least 200-500 kb. This mapping provides the basis for the identification of the AHC and GK gene

    Chaste : Cancer, Heart and Soft Tissue Environment

    Funding: UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council [grant number EP/N509711/1 (J.K.)].Chaste (Cancer, Heart And Soft Tissue Environment) is an open source simulation package for the numerical solution of mathematical models arising in physiology and biology. To date, Chaste development has been driven primarily by applications that include continuum modelling of cardiac electrophysiology (‘Cardiac Chaste’), discrete cell-based modelling of soft tissues (‘Cell-based Chaste’), and modelling of ventilation in lungs (‘Lung Chaste’). Cardiac Chaste addresses the need for a high-performance, generic, and verified simulation framewor kfor cardiac electrophysiology that is freely available to the scientific community. Cardiac chaste provides a software package capable of realistic heart simulations that is efficient, rigorously tested, and runs on HPC platforms. Cell-based Chaste addresses the need for efficient and verified implementations of cell-based modelling frameworks, providing a set of extensible tools for simulating biological tissues. Computational modelling, along with live imaging techniques, plays an important role in understanding the processes of tissue growth and repair. A wide range of cell-based modelling frameworks have been developed that have each been successfully applied in a range of biological applications. Cell-based Chaste includes implementations of the cellular automaton model, the cellular Potts model, cell-centre models with cell representations as overlapping spheres or Voronoi tessellations, and the vertex model. Lung Chaste addresses the need for a novel, generic and efficient lung modelling software package that is both tested and verified. It aims to couple biophysically-detailed models of airway mechanics with organ-scale ventilation models in a package that is freely available to the scientific community.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events

    The B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives Δmd=0.493±0.012(stat)±0.009(syst)\Delta m_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)} ps−1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Exploring the constraint profile of winter sports resort tourist segments

    Many studies have confirmed the importance of market segmentation both theoretically and empirically. Surprisingly though, no study has so far addressed the issue from the perspective of leisure constraints. Since different consumers face different barriers, we look at participation in leisure activities as an outcome of the negotiation process that winter sports resort tourists go through, to balance between related motives and constraints. This empirical study reports the findings on the applicability of constraining factors in segmenting the tourists who visit winter sports resorts. Utilizing data from 1,391 tourists of winter sports resorts in Greece, five segments were formed based on their constraint, demographic and behavioral profile. Our findings indicate that such segmentation sheds light on factors that could potentially limit the full utilization of the market. To maximize utilization, we suggest customizing marketing to the profile of each distinct winter sports resort tourist segment that emerge
