A simple high-sensitivity technique for purity analysis of xenon gas
We report on the development and performance of a high-sensitivity
purity-analysis technique for gaseous xenon. The gas is sampled at macroscopic
pressure from the system of interest using a UHV leak valve. The xenon present
in the sample is removed with a liquid-nitrogen cold trap, and the remaining
impurities are observed with a standard vacuum mass-spectroscopy device. Using
calibrated samples of xenon gas spiked with known levels of impurities, we find
that the minimum detectable levels of N2, O2, and methane are 1 ppb, 160 ppt,
and 60 ppt respectively. This represents an improvement of about a factor of
10,000 compared to measurements performed without a coldtrap.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
Direct and indirect orthotic management of medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful condition and affects approximately 80% of individuals by the age of 55 [1], with knee OA occurring two times more frequently than OA of the hand or hip [2].The condition is more prevalent in the medial compartment and restricts the daily lives of individuals due to pain and a lack of functional independence. Patients with medial compartment osteoarthritis often have a varus alignment, with the mechanical axis and load bearing passing through this compartment with a greater adduction moment leading to greater pain and progression of osteoarthritis [3]. Surgery for the condition is possible although in some cases, particularly younger patients or those not yet requiring surgery, clinical management remains a challenge. Before surgery is considered, however, conservative management is advocated, though no one treatment has been shown to be most effective, and there are few quality biomechanical or clinical studies. Of the conservative approaches the principal orthotic treatments are valgus knee braces and laterally wedged foot inlays. Studies of knee valgus bracing have consistently demonstrated an associated decreased pain and improved function [4], and greater confidence [5]. A laterally wedged foot inlay has a thicker lateral border and applies a valgus moment to the heel. It is theorised that by changing the position of the ankle and subtalar joints during weight-bearing [6] the lateral wedges may apply a valgus moment across the knee as well as the rearfoot, with the assumed reduction on load in the medial knee compartment [7]. However, there has been no study to directly compare these orthotic treatments in the same study. Correlated disordered interactions on Potts models
Using a weak-disorder scheme and real-space renormalization-group techniques,
we obtain analytical results for the critical behavior of various q-state Potts
models with correlated disordered exchange interactions along d1 of d spatial
dimensions on hierarchical (Migdal-Kadanoff) lattices. Our results indicate
qualitative differences between the cases d-d1=1 (for which we find nonphysical
random fixed points, suggesting the existence of nonperturbative fixed
distributions) and d-d1>1 (for which we do find acceptable perturbartive random
fixed points), in agreement with previous numerical calculations by Andelman
and Aharony. We also rederive a criterion for relevance of correlated disorder,

Study of a zirconium getter for purification of xenon gas
Oxygen, nitrogen and methane purification efficiencies for a common zirconium
getter are measured in 1050 Torr of xenon gas. Starting with impurity
concentrations near 10^{-6} g/g, the outlet impurity level is found to be less
than 120*10^{-12} g/g for O2 and less than 950*10^{-12} g/g for N2. For methane
we find residual contamination of the purified gas at concentrations varying
over three orders of magnitude, depending on the purifier temperature and the
gas flow rate. A slight reduction in the purifier's methane efficiency is
observed after 13 mg of this impurity has been absorbed, which we attribute to
partial exhaustion of the purifier's capacity for this species. We also find
that the purifier's ability to absorb N2 and methane can be extinguished long
before any decrease in O2 performance is observed, and slower flow rates should
be employed for xenon purification due to the cooling effect that the heavy gas

A Xenon Condenser with a Remote Liquid Storage Vessel
We describe the design and operation of a system for xenon liquefaction in
which the condenser is separated from the liquid storage vessel. The condenser
is cooled by a pulse tube cryocooler, while the vessel is cooled only by the
liquid xenon itself. This arrangement facilitates liquid particle detector
research by allowing easy access to the upper and lower flanges of the vessel.
We find that an external xenon gas pump is useful for increasing the rate at
which cooling power is delivered to the vessel, and we present measurements of

Thermal Resonance in Signal Transmission
We use temperature tuning to control signal propagation in simple
one-dimensional arrays of masses connected by hard anharmonic springs and with
no local potentials. In our numerical model a sustained signal is applied at
one site of a chain immersed in a thermal environment and the signal-to-noise
ratio is measured at each oscillator. We show that raising the temperature can
lead to enhanced signal propagation along the chain, resulting in thermal
resonance effects akin to the resonance observed in arrays of bistable systems.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Primordialists and Constructionists: a typology of theories of religion
This article adopts categories from nationalism theory to classify theories of religion. Primordialist explanations are grounded in evolutionary psychology and emphasize the innate human demand for religion. Primordialists predict that religion does not decline in the modern era but will endure in perpetuity. Constructionist theories argue that religious demand is a human construct. Modernity initially energizes religion, but subsequently undermines it. Unpacking these ideal types is necessary in order to describe actual theorists of religion. Three distinctions within primordialism and constructionism are relevant. Namely those distinguishing: a) materialist from symbolist forms of constructionism; b) theories of origins from those pertaining to the reproduction of religion; and c) within reproduction, between theories of religious persistence and secularization. This typology helps to make sense of theories of religion by classifying them on the basis of their causal mechanisms, chronology and effects. In so doing, it opens up new sightlines for theory and research
Constraints on the Nucleon Strange Form Factors at Q^2 ~ 0.1 GeV^2
We report the most precise measurement to date of a parity-violating
asymmetry in elastic electron-proton scattering. The measurement was carried
out with a beam energy of 3.03 GeV and a scattering angle =6
degrees, with the result A_PV = -1.14 +/- 0.24 (stat) +/- 0.06 (syst) parts per
million. From this we extract, at Q^2 = 0.099 GeV^2, the strange form factor
combination G_E^s + 0.080 G_M^s = 0.030 +/- 0.025 (stat) +/- 0.006 (syst) +/-
0.012 (FF) where the first two errors are experimental and the last error is
due to the uncertainty in the neutron electromagnetic form factor. This result
significantly improves current knowledge of G_E^s and G_M^s at Q^2 ~0.1 GeV^2.
A consistent picture emerges when several measurements at about the same Q^2
value are combined: G_E^s is consistent with zero while G_M^s prefers positive
values though G_E^s=G_M^s=0 is compatible with the data at 95% C.L.Comment: minor wording changes for clarity, updated references, dropped one

Complete breeding failures in ivory gull following unusual rainy storms in North Greenland
Natural catastrophic events such as heavy rainfall and windstorms may induce drastic decreases in breeding success of animal populations. We report the impacts of summer rainfalls on the reproductive success of ivory gull (Pagophila eburnea) in north-east Greenland. On two occasions, at Amdrup Land in July 2009 and at Station Nord in July 2011, we observed massive ivory gull breeding failures following violent rainfall and windstorms that hit the colonies. In each colony, all of the breeding birds abandoned their eggs or chicks during the storm. Juvenile mortality was close to 100% at Amdrup Land in 2009 and 100% at Station Nord in 2011. Our results show that strong winds associated with heavy rain directly affected the reproductive success of some Arctic bird species. Such extreme weather events may become more common with climate change and represent a new potential factor affecting ivory gull breeding success in the High Arctic
