Structural and doping effects in the half-metallic double perovskite CrWO
he structural, transport, magnetic and optical properties of the double
perovskite CrWO with have been studied. By
varying the alkaline earth ion on the site, the influence of steric effects
on the Curie temperature and the saturation magnetization has been
determined. A maximum K was found for SrCrWO having an almost
undistorted perovskite structure with a tolerance factor . For
CaCrWO and BaCrWO structural changes result in a strong
reduction of . Our study strongly suggests that for the double perovskites
in general an optimum is achieved only for , that is, for an
undistorted perovskite structure. Electron doping in SrCrWO by a
partial substitution of Sr by La was found to reduce both
and the saturation magnetization . The reduction of could be
attributed both to band structure effects and the Cr/W antisites induced by
doping. Band structure calculations for SrCrWO predict an energy gap in
the spin-up band, but a finite density of states for the spin-down band. The
predictions of the band structure calculation are consistent with our optical
measurements. Our experimental results support the presence of a kinetic energy
driven mechanism in CrWO, where ferromagnetism is stabilized by a
hybridization of states of the nonmagnetic W-site positioned in between the
high spin Cr-sites.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure
Study of heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si in high-purity Al-Si alloys with Sr addition
The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2010 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM InternationalAl-5 wt pct Si master-alloys with controlled Sr and/or P addition/s were produced using super purity Al 99.99 wt pct and Si 99.999 wt pct materials in an arc melter. The master-alloy was melt-spun resulting in the production of thin ribbons. The Al matrix of the ribbons contained entrained Al-Si eutectic droplets that were subsequently investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to examine the effect of the Sr and P additions on eutectic undercoolings and nucleation phenomenon. Results indicate that, unlike P, Sr does not promote nucleation. Increasing Sr additions depressed the eutectic nucleation temperature. This may be a result of the formation of a Sr phase that could consume or detrimentally affect potent AlP nucleation sites. This work is financially supported by the

Locally supersymmetric D=3 non-linear sigma models
We study non-linear sigma models with N local supersymmetries in three
space-time dimensions. For N=1 and 2 the target space of these models is
Riemannian or Kahler, respectively. All N>2 theories are associated with
Einstein spaces. For N=3 the target space is quaternionic, while for N=4 it
generally decomposes into two separate quaternionic spaces, associated with
inequivalent supermultiplets. For N=5,6,8 there is a unique (symmetric) space
for any given number of supermultiplets. Beyond that there are only theories
based on a single supermultiplet for N=9,10,12 and 16, associated with coset
spaces with the exceptional isometry groups , ,
and , respectively. For and the
theories obtained by dimensional reduction are two-loop finite.Comment: 35 pages plain tex, CERN-TH.6612/92 THU-92-1
Possibility of extracting the weak phase from decays
We explore the possibility of extracting the weak phase from pure
tree decays in a model
independent way. The CP violating weak phase can be determined
cleanly, without any hadronic uncertainties, as these decay modes are free from
the penguin pollutions. Furthermore, neither tagging nor time dependent studies
are required to extract the angle with these modes.Comment: 12 pages, LaTex, Minor changes in the text, version to appear in

Development and operational experience of magnetic horn system for T2K experiment
A magnetic horn system to be operated at a pulsed current of 320 kA and to
survive high-power proton beam operation at 750 kW was developed for the T2K
experiment. The first set of T2K magnetic horns was operated for over 12
million pulses during the four years of operation from 2010 to 2013, under a
maximum beam power of 230 kW, and protons were exposed to
the production target. No significant damage was observed throughout this
period. This successful operation of the T2K magnetic horns led to the
discovery of the oscillation phenomenon in 2013 by
the T2K experiment. In this paper, details of the design, construction, and
operation experience of the T2K magnetic horns are described.Comment: 22 pages, 40 figures, also submitted to Nuclear Instrument and

Exploring the Unitarity Triangle through CP violation observables in
We discuss the determination of the CKM parameters from the forthcoming
violation observables in decays. Combining the information on
mixing induced CP violation in , with the
precision observable and the -- mixing phase
, we propose a determination of the unitarity triangle . Computing the penguin parameters within QCD
factorization yield precise determination of , reflected
by a weak dependence on the which is shown as a second order effect.
The impact of the direct CP violation observable on the penguin
parameters are investigated and a lower bound on is extracted. We also
discuss the effect of the -- new physics mixing phase on
the penguin parameters and . Using the SU(3)-flavour
symmetry argument and the current -factories data provided by the modes, we complement the CP-violating
observables in a variety of ways, in particular we find that .
Finally we analyze systematically the SU(3)-symmetry breaking factor within QCD
factorization.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, typos corrected, reference and some remarks

Inclusive Measure of |V_ub| with the Analytic Coupling Model
By analyzing B -> X_u l nu_l spectra with a model based on soft-gluon
resummation and an analytic time-like QCD coupling, we obtain |V_ub| = (3.76
+-0.13 +- 0.22)*10^(-3), where the first and the second error refers to
experimental and theoretical errors, respectively. The V_ub value is obtained
from the available measured semileptonic branching fractions in limited regions
of the phase-space. The distributions in the lepton energy E_l, the hadron
invariant mass m_X, the light-cone momentum P_+ = E_X - p_X, together with the
double distributions in (m_X,q^2) and (E_l,s_h^max), are used to select the
phase-space regions. The q^2 is the dilepton squared momentum and s_h^max is
the maximal m_X^2 at fixed q^2 and E_l. The V_ub value obtained is in complete
agreement with the value coming from exclusive B decays and from an over-all
fit to the Standard Model parameters. We show that the slight disagreement (up
to +2 sigma) with respect to previous inclusive measurements is not related to
different choices for the b (and c) masses but to a different modelling of the
threshold (Sudakov) region.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, revised version accepted in Eur.Phys.J.
Model-independent extraction of matrix elements from top-quark measurements at hadron colliders
Current methods to extract the quark-mixing matrix element from
single-top production measurements assume that : top quarks decay into quarks with 100% branching fraction,
s-channel single-top production is always accompanied by a quark and
initial-state contributions from and quarks in the -channel
production of single top quarks are neglected. Triggered by a recent
measurement of the ratio
performed by the D0 collaboration, we consider a extraction method
that takes into account non zero d- and s-quark contributions both in
production and decay. We propose a strategy that allows to extract consistently
and in a model-independent way the quark mixing matrix elements ,
, and from the measurement of and from single-top
measured event yields. As an illustration, we apply our method to the Tevatron
data using a CDF analysis of the measured single-top event yield with two jets
in the final state one of which is identified as a -quark jet. We constrain
the matrix elements within a four-generation scenario by combining
the results with those obtained from direct measurements in flavor physics and
determine the preferred range for the top-quark decay width within different
scenarios.Comment: 36 pages, 17 figure
Pattern formation in directional solidification under shear flow. I: Linear stability analysis and basic patterns
An asymptotic interface equation for directional solidification near the
absolute stabiliy limit is extended by a nonlocal term describing a shear flow
parallel to the interface. In the long-wave limit considered, the flow acts
destabilizing on a planar interface. Moreover, linear stability analysis
suggests that the morphology diagram is modified by the flow near the onset of
the Mullins-Sekerka instability. Via numerical analysis, the bifurcation
structure of the system is shown to change. Besides the known hexagonal cells,
structures consisting of stripes arise. Due to its symmetry-breaking
properties, the flow term induces a lateral drift of the whole pattern, once
the instability has become active. The drift velocity is measured numerically
and described analytically in the framework of a linear analysis. At large flow
strength, the linear description breaks down, which is accompanied by a
transition to flow-dominated morphologies, described in a companion paper.
Small and intermediate flows lead to increased order in the lattice structure
of the pattern, facilitating the elimination of defects. Locally oscillating
structures appear closer to the instability threshold with flow than without.Comment: 20 pages, Latex, accepted for Physical Review
Electron-phonon interaction in C70
The matrix elements of the deformation potential of C are calculated
by means of a simple, yet accurate solution of the electron-phonon coupling
problem in fullerenes, based on a parametrization of the ground state
electronic density of the system in terms of hybridized orbitals.
The value of the calculated dimensionless total electron-phonon coupling
constant is , an order of magnitude smaller than in
C, consistent with the lack of a superconducting phase transition in
CA fullerite, and in overall agreement with measurements of the
broadening of Raman peaks in CK. We also calculate the photoemission
cross section of C, which is found to display less structure than that
associated with C, in overall agreement with the experimental
findings.Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev.
