Effect of Anchoring Groups on the Conduction Properties of Terphenyl Molecules Connected to Copper Leads

    Get PDF
We report equilibrium and non-equilibrium conductance of terphenyl molecules with different anchoring groups including sulfur and nitrogen atom. The corresponding molecules are terphenyl-dithiols (TPDT) and diamino-terphenyl (DATP). The non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) technique has been implemented on the density functional tight-binding (DFTB) code to perform computations of the electronic transport properties of molecular devices. The NEGFs are used to compute the electronic density self-consistently with open boundary condition naturally encountered in transport problem which is imposed by the potentials at the contacts. As result, the value of the molecular conductance with amine groups is higher about ten times than the thiol anchored group

In this letter, we demonstrate the importance of the fabricated device structure for the external differential efficiency, threshold current density, and maximum operating temperature for ground state operation of a 1.31-mu/m quantum dot laser. The introduction of a shallow ridge etch design and selective electroplating of the gold bondpads is demonstrated to offer improved performance in comparison to a deep ridge etch design with thinner evaporated gold bondpads

    High-performance three-layer 1.3-/spl mu/m InAs-GaAs quantum-dot lasers with very low continuous-wave room-temperature threshold currents

    Get PDF
The combination of high-growth-temperature GaAs spacer layers and high-reflectivity (HR)-coated facets has been utilized to obtain low threshold currents and threshold current densities for 1.3-/spl mu/m multilayer InAs-GaAs quantum-dot lasers. A very low continuous-wave (CW) room-temperature threshold current of 1.5 mA and a threshold current density of 18.8 A/cm/sup 2/ are achieved for a three-layer device with a 1-mm HR/HR cavity. For a 2-mm cavity, the CW threshold current density is as low as 17 A/cm/sup 2/ for an HR/HR device. An output power as high as 100 mW is obtained for a device with HR/cleaved facets

lmmunocontraception may have management application for white-tailed deer populations in parks and preserves. where hunting 1s illegal or impractical. This study examines physiological aspects of immunocontraception with porcine zonae pellucidae in 53 fertile white-tailed does. In separate studies, we employed protocols of three and two porcine zonae pellucidae (PZP) injections as well as two different protocols using one injection. Each one-injection vaccination consisted of one dose of porcine zonae pellucidae as in other protocols plus a second controlled-release dose of the material delivered via an osmotic minipump implant or injected, biodegradable polymer microspheres. We monitored fawn production for 1 to 3 years in all does and measured serum PZP antibody titers at various times after treatment in 15 randomly selected PZP does and in 2 control does. All three-injection PZP does were give a single PZP booster inoculation after 1 year. None of the two- or three-injection does and none of the one-injection does with a minipump produced fawns the first year after treatment, whereas two of seven does given a single injection with controlled-release microspheres produced fawns. In 49 control-doe breeding seasons, the pooled incidence of fawn production was 93.8 percent. Regarding reversibility of infertility, the incidence of fawn production was 75 % within 2 years after treatment was discontinued. Serum anti-PZP antibody titers were present only after PZP treatment, and highest titers occurred in does given two or three separate PZP injections. PZP-treated does showing \u3e50% of maximal antibody titers at the onset of a breeding season did not produce fawns; those showing \u3c33% of maximal titers did. These data demonstrate in white-tailed does that (1)multiple-injection PZP vaccination can produce complete contraception for at least one breeding season, (2) the contraceptive effect is reversible within 2 years in most does, (3) an elevated anti-PZP antibody titer occurs after PZP vaccination, and (4) multiple-injection PZP vaccination produces a sustained antibody response through at least one breeding season. In separate field studies of wild, free-roaming deer in three locations, we successfully lured does to within darting range using bait stations. In two locations, we attempted and achieved remote delivery PZP vaccination of 60-9- percent of does. In the one location for which we have data on fawn production, the fawning incidence was 0/10, 6/9, and 8/9 for two- and one-injection porcine zonae pellucidae and untreated controls, respectively. In the same location, we monitored seasonal aspects of activity, behavior, and physical condition. We also determined that there is a good potential for remote assessment of pregnancy in does using measurement of pregnancy-specific elevations of steroid metabolites in fecal samples

Observational Evidence of Quasi-27-Day Oscillation Propagating from the Lower Atmosphere to the Mesosphere over 20° N

By using meteor radar, radiosonde and satellite observations over 20° N and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data during 81 days from 22 December 2004 to 12 March 2005, a quasi-27-day oscillation propagating from the troposphere to the mesosphere is reported. A pronounced 27-day periodicity is observed in the raw zonal wind from meteor radar. Spectral analysis shows that the oscillation also occurs in the meridional wind and temperature and propagates westward with wavenumber s = 1; thus the oscillation is of Rossby wave type. The oscillation attains a large amplitude of about 12 m s−1 in the eastward wind shear region of the troposphere. When the wind shear reverses, its amplitude rapidly decays, and the background wind gradually evolves to be westward. However, the oscillation can penetrate through the weak westward wind field due to its relatively large phase speed. After this, the oscillation restrengthens with its upward propagation and reaches about 20 m s−1 in the mesosphere. Reanalysis data show that the oscillation can propagate to the mid and high latitudes from the low latitudes and has large amplitudes over there. There is another interesting phenomenon that a quasi-46-day oscillation appears simultaneously in the troposphere, but it cannot penetrate through the westward wind field because of its smaller phase speed. In the observational interval, a quasi-27-day periodicity in outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR) and specific humidity is found in a latitudinal zone of 5–20° N. Thus the quasi-27-day oscillation may be an atmospheric response to forcing due to the convective activity with a period of about 27 days in the tropical region

Induced CMB quadrupole from pointing offsets

Recent claims in the literature have suggested that the {\it WMAP} quadrupole is not primordial in origin, and arises from an aliasing of the much larger dipole field because of incorrect satellite pointing. We attempt to reproduce this result and delineate the key physics leading to the effect. We find that, even if real, the induced quadrupole would be smaller than claimed. We discuss reasons why the {\it WMAP} data are unlikely to suffer from this particular systematic effect, including the implications for observations of point sources. Given this evidence against the reality of the effect, the similarity between the pointing-offset-induced signal and the actual quadrupole then appears to be quite puzzling. However, we find that the effect arises from a convolution between the gradient of the dipole field and anisotropic coverage of the scan direction at each pixel. There is something of a directional conspiracy here -- the dipole signal lies close to the Ecliptic Plane, and its direction, together with the {\it WMAP} scan strategy, results in a strong coupling to the Y2, −1Y_{2,\,-1} component in Ecliptic co-ordinates. The dominant strength of this component in the measured quadrupole suggests that one should exercise increased caution in interpreting its estimated amplitude. The {\it Planck} satellite has a different scan strategy which does not so directly couple the dipole and quadrupole in this way and will soon provide an independent measurement.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Multiple time scales and the empirical models for stochastic volatility

    Get PDF
The most common stochastic volatility models such as the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU), the Heston, the exponential OU (ExpOU) and Hull-White models define volatility as a Markovian process. In this work we check of the applicability of the Markovian approximation at separate times scales and will try to answer the question which of the stochastic volatility models indicated above is the most realistic. To this end we consider the volatility at both short (a few days) and long (a few months)time scales as a Markovian process and estimate for it the coefficients of the Kramers-Moyal expansion using the data for Dow-Jones Index. It has been found that the empirical data allow to take only the first two coefficients of expansion to be non zero that define form of the volatility stochastic differential equation of Ito. It proved to be that for the long time scale the empirical data support the ExpOU model. At the short time scale the empirical model coincides with ExpOU model for the small volatility quantities only.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

Finding the reconstructions of semiconductor surfaces via a genetic algorithm

In this article we show that the reconstructions of semiconductor surfaces can be determined using a genetic procedure. Coupled with highly optimized interatomic potentials, the present approach represents an efficient tool for finding and sorting good structural candidates for further electronic structure calculations and comparison with scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) images. We illustrate the method for the case of Si(105), and build a database of structures that includes the previously found low-energy models, as well as a number of novel configurations.Comment: 4 figures, 1 tabl

Structure of Si(114) determined by global optimization methods

In this article we report the results of global structural optimization of the Si(114) surface, which is a stable high-index orientation of silicon. We use two independent procedures recently developed for the determination of surface reconstructions, the parallel-tempering Monte Carlo method and the genetic algorithm. These procedures, coupled with the use of a highly-optimized interatomic potential for silicon, lead to finding a set of possible models for Si(114), whose energies are recalculated with ab-initio density functional methods. The most stable structure obtained here without experimental input coincides with the structure determined from scanning tunneling microscopy experiments and density functional calculations by Erwin, Baski and Whitman [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 687 (1996)].Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
