Soldering and welding techniques are used to connect a coaxial cable to a printed circuit board. This device aids reliability control of equipment as standard connectors are bulky and heavy

'Englische Kabinette' Made in 18th Century Germany

Evidence of an 'English taste' in fine and decorative arts can be found in several countries that were linked to the 18th century British Empire through political and religious alliances or as trading partners. In fact the term 'English' not only referred to a certain taste or style, it was also used to describe particular pieces of furniture and aspects of their design, regardless of where they had been made, and it was furthermore used by ambitious European cabinetmakers when advertising themselves. By comparing pieces of furniture made in the first half of the eighteenth century in the British Isles with contemporary objects made in the German speaking countries, I will try to establish what the 'English taste' was, how it was exported and how it was adapted and used outside England. The proposed exhibition features English 'originals' and comparable pieces of furniture made mostly at the northern and protestant courts or the Free Cities of Germany. It was the striking similarity between some of these pieces of furniture that encouraged me to research the following work

The Discovery of a High Redshift X-ray Emitting QSO Very Close to the Nucleus of NGC 7319

A strong X-ray source only 8" from the nucleus of the Sy2 galaxy NGC 7319 in Stephan's Quintet has been discovered by Chandra. We have identified the optical counterpart and show it is a QSO with ze=2.114z_e = 2.114. It is also a ULX with Lx=1.5x1040ergsec1L_x = 1.5 x 10^{40} erg sec^{-1}. From the optical spectra of the QSO and interstellar gas in the galaxy (z = .022) we show that it is very likely that the QSO and the gas are interacting.Comment: 8 figures, 5 color, minimized ps siz

Implantation of a colorectal stent as a therapeutic approach in the treatment of esophageal leakage

BACKGROUND: While the mortality of esophageal surgery has decreased due to technological advancements, there is still a complication rate of about 30%. One of the main complications is the anastomotic leakage associated with a significant rate of morbidity and mortality. To close the leakage the efficacy of self-expanding stents (SES) has been shown in different studies. However, the high rate of stent migration limits the use of commercial available stents. In our case we were faced with the problem that the diameter of all available stents was too small to attach tightly to the mucosal wall of the esophagogastric anastomosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We used, for the first time to our knowledge, a metal stent designed for colorectal application in an extensive anastomotic leak after esophageal resection in a patient with an esophageal cancer. After primary surgery with subtotal esohagectomy the anastomotic leak was stented endoscopically with a Polyflex self-expanding covered plastic stent after no response to intensive conventional management. Even though the stent was placed correctly, the diameter of the Polyflex stent was too small to attach onto the wall of the esophagogastric anastomosis. Again surgery was performed with a thoracal resection of the esophageal remnant and a hand made anastomosis. Unfortunately, again an anastomotic leak was detected soon after. To close the leak we decided to use a covered colorectal stent (Hanarostent) with an inner diameter of 30 mm. Sixteen weeks later the stent was extracted and complete mucosal healing of the esophageal leak was observed. CONCLUSION: The stent implantation with a large wide diameter offers a good chance to close more extensive leaks and prevent stent migration

Orthotopic liver transplantation in human-immunodeficiency-virus-positive patients in Germany

Objectives: This summary evaluates the outcomes of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) of HIV-positive patients in Germany. Methods: Retrospective chart analysis of HIV-positive patients, who had been liver-transplanted in Germany between July 1997 and July 2011. Results: 38 transplantations were performed in 32 patients at 9 German transplant centres. The reasons for OLT were end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and/or liver failure due to hepatitis C (HCV) (n = 19), hepatitis B (HBV) (n = 10), multiple viral infections of the liver (n = 2) and Budd-Chiari-Syndrome. In July 2011 19/32 (60%) of the transplanted patients were still alive with a median survival of 61 months (IQR (interquartile range): 41-86 months). 6 patients had died in the early post-transplantation period from septicaemia (n = 4), primary graft dysfunction (n = 1), and intrathoracal hemorrhage (n = 1). Later on 7 patients had died from septicaemia (n = 2), delayed graft failure (n = 2), recurrent HCC (n = 2), and renal failure (n = 1). Recurrent HBV infection was efficiently prevented in 11/12 patients; HCV reinfection occurred in all patients and contributed considerably to the overall mortality. Conclusions: Overall OLT is a feasible approach in HIV-infected patients with acceptable survival rates in Germany. Reinfection with HCV still remains a major clinical challenge in HIV/HCV coinfection after OLT
