    Effects of profile errors on lubrication performance of helical gears

    Analysis of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of gears generally assumes that the tooth flanks are smooth surfaces. There is considerable interest in establishing the extent to which smooth surface analyses are distorted by the presence of surface roughness. The current paper concerns a different scale of deviation from the specified surface profile, namely involute profile error. The paper quantifies the deviation from the smooth surface behaviour using standard profile error measurements, and also considers how the means by which profile error is measured influences the outcome/conclusions. Transient EHL analyses of the meshing cycle of helical gears taking profile error data from a gear measuring machine are compared with analyses using equivalent measurements determined by the waviness from surface profilometer measurements

    Electromagnetically induced transparency in multi-level cascade scheme of cold rubidium atoms

    We report an experimental investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a multi-level cascade system of cold atoms. The absorption spectral profiles of the probe light in the multi-level cascade system were observed in cold Rb-85 atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap, and the dependence of the spectral profile on the intensity of the coupling laser was investigated. The experimental measurements agree with the theoretical calculations based on the density matrix equations of the rubidium cascade system.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    A robust spectral method for solving Heston’s model

    In this paper, we consider the Heston’s volatility model (Heston in Rev. Financ. Stud. 6: 327–343, 1993]. We simulate this model using a combination of the spectral collocation method and the Laplace transforms method. To approximate the two dimensional PDE, we construct a grid which is the tensor product of the two grids, each of which is based on the Chebyshev points in the two spacial directions. The resulting semi-discrete problem is then solved by applying the Laplace transform method based on Talbot’s idea of deformation of the contour integral (Talbot in IMA J. Appl. Math. 23(1): 97–120, 1979)

    Tyrian purple : an ancient natural dye for cross-conjugated n-type charge transport

    Herein, we present two novel organic semiconducting polymers synthesised from an ancient dye. By employing cross-conjugation within the polymer backbone as a synthetic strategy, we are able to engineer optical gaps such that the novel materials absorb over the entire visible spectrum. The cross-conjugated polymers exhibited relatively high n-type charge transport performance in organic field-effect transistors, a rare characteristic for this type of polymer. Quantum chemical calculations provide insight into this behaviour, suggesting that, whilst conjugation along the HOMO is indeed inhibited via molecular design, these materials possess highly delocalized LUMOs, facilitating high n-type charge transport

    Automated dynamic thermal simulation of houses and housing stocks using readily available reduced data

    This paper describes a new method to swiftly model the dynamics of heating energy demand and indoor air temperatures of houses and housing stocks. The Reduced data Energy Model (RdDEM) provides a cost-effective alternative to steady-state modelling by enhancing the input dataset from the Reduced data Standard Assessment Procedure (RdSAP) – the method used to calculate Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) in the UK. This eliminates the main drawbacks associated with dynamic thermal simulation (DTS) of housing stocks, namely the large amount of required input data and the significant time required to model each house. The RdDEM algorithms create RdSAP-equivalent geometry, construction, thermal mass and boundary conditions in Energy Plus DTS software. The new inferences and methodological enhancements were first tested and then implemented at scale using a sample of 83 semi-detached houses. Most energy results from RdDEM were within 10% of those from RdSAP. The differences are explained by the different ways that indoor air temperature is calculated. The RdDEM method provides a dynamic alternative to RdSAP for understanding the dynamics of energy demand and indoor air temperatures in homes. This could include assessing the peak demand of a community energy scheme or assessing the summertime overheating risk in individual dwellings. Ultimately, it could provide a dynamic housing stock model using the data already collected from millions of houses to generate EPCs

    Application of phage display to high throughput antibody generation and characterization.

    We have created a high quality phage display library containing over 1010 human antibodies and describe its use in the generation of antibodies on an unprecedented scale. We have selected, screened and sequenced over 38,000 recombinant antibodies to 292 antigens, yielding over 7,200 unique clones. 4,400 antibodies were characterized by specificity testing and detailed sequence analysis and the data/clones are available online. Sensitive detection was demonstrated in a bead based flow cytometry assay. Furthermore, positive staining by immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays was found for 37% (143/381) of antibodies.     A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons

    We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference is found to be smaller than 3.0 10^-3 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.

    Measurement of the B0 Lifetime and Oscillation Frequency using B0->D*+l-v decays

    The lifetime and oscillation frequency of the B0 meson has been measured using B0->D*+l-v decays recorded on the Z0 peak with the OPAL detector at LEP. The D*+ -> D0pi+ decays were reconstructed using an inclusive technique and the production flavour of the B0 mesons was determined using a combination of tags from the rest of the event. The results t_B0 = 1.541 +- 0.028 +- 0.023 ps, Dm_d = 0.497 +- 0.024 +- 0.025 ps-1 were obtained, where in each case the first error is statistical and the second systematic.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.
