Polyunsaturated fatty acids in the pathogenesis and treatment of multiple sclerosis
Epidemiological, biochemical, animal model and clinical trial data described in this overview strongly suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly n-6 fatty acids, have a role in the pathogenesis and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Data presented provides further evidence for a disturbance in n-6 fatty acid metabolism in MS. Disturbance of n-6 fatty acid metabolism and dysregulation of cytokines are shown to be linked and a "proof of concept clinical trial" further supports such a hypothesis. In a randomised double-blind, placebo controlled trial of a high dose and low dose selected GLA (18:3n-6)-rich oil and placebo control, the high dose had a marked clinical effect in relapsing-remitting MS, significantly decreasing the relapse rate and the progression of disease. Laboratory findings paralleled clinical changes in the placebo group in that production of mononuclear cell pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta) was increased and anti-inflammatory TGF-beta markedly decreased with loss of membrane n-6 fatty acids linoleic (18:2n-6) and arachidonic acids (20:4n-6). In contrast there were no such changes in the high dose group. The improvement in disability (Expanded Disability Status Scale) in the high dose suggests there maybe a beneficial effect on neuronal lipids and neural function in MS. Thus disturbed n-6 fatty acid metabolism in MS gives rise to loss of membrane long chain n-6 fatty acids and loss of the anti-inflammatory regulatory cytokine TGF-beta, particularly during the relapse phase, as well as loss of these important neural fatty acids for CNS structure and function and consequent long term neurological deficit in MS
A New Histogram-based Descriptor for Images Retrieval from databases
International audienceIn this paper, we propose a new approach for designing histogram-based descriptors. For demonstration purpose, we generate a descriptor based on the histogram of differential-turning angle scale space (d-TASS) function and its derived data. We then compare the proposed histogram-based descriptor with the traditional histogram descriptors in terms of retrieval performance from image databases. Experiments on three shapes databases demonstrate the efficiency and the effectiveness of the new technique: the proposed technique of histogram-based descriptor outperforms the traditional one. These experiments showed also that the proposed histogram-based descriptor using d-TASS function and the derived features performs well compared with the state-of-the-art. When applied to texture images retrieval, the proposed approach yields higher performance than the traditional histogram-based descriptors. From these results, we believe that the proposed histogram-based descriptor should perform efficiently for medical images retrieval so we will focus on this aspect in the future work
The comparision of essential oil composition from Thymus vulgaris L., Melissa officinalis L. and Achillea millefolium L. in Shahrekord climate condition
In this research, the essential oil composition of Thymus vulgaris L., Melissa officinalis L. and Achillea millefolium L. were evaluated in Shahrekord climate condition. The aerial parts of these plants in full flowering stages were collected in summer 2017 from a research farm of Shahrekord University. The essential oils were extracted by hydro distillation method (clevenger apparatus) and were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Results were showed that the thymol (33.2%), α-terpinene (18.50%), p-cymene (10.9%) and linalool (5%) were the most components of Thymus vulgaris. Neral (26.3%), geranial (25%), β-caryophyllene (6.9%), geranyl acetate (6.4%) and cis-crysantenol (5.8%) were the most important compound of M. officinalis essential oil and the cis-chrysanthenyl acetate (27.19%), cis-chrysantheol (13.16%), germacren D (7.24%), β-caryophyllene (6.69%) and thymol (6.15%) recorded in Achillea essential oil In conclusion, the results were showed that essential oils of thyme, lemon balm, and yarrow had suitable quality composition in Shahrekord climate conditions
Teleworking practice in small and medium-sized firms: Management style and worker autonomy
In an empirical study of teleworking practices amongst small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in West London, organisational factors such as management attitudes, worker autonomy and employment flexibility were found to be more critical than technological provision in facilitating successful implementation. Consequently, we argue that telework in most SMEs appears as a marginal activity performed mainly by managers and specialist mobile workers
Interplay between telecommunications and face-to-face interactions - a study using mobile phone data
In this study we analyze one year of anonymized telecommunications data for
over one million customers from a large European cellphone operator, and we
investigate the relationship between people's calls and their physical
location. We discover that more than 90% of users who have called each other
have also shared the same space (cell tower), even if they live far apart.
Moreover, we find that close to 70% of users who call each other frequently (at
least once per month on average) have shared the same space at the same time -
an instance that we call co-location. Co-locations appear indicative of
coordination calls, which occur just before face-to-face meetings. Their number
is highly predictable based on the amount of calls between two users and the
distance between their home locations - suggesting a new way to quantify the
interplay between telecommunications and face-to-face interactions
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and International Business Travel: Mobility Allies?
Like forecasts about the paperless office, technological solutions to the problem of international business travel continue to be deferred. As with the increased use of office paper, international business travel is defying predictions of its decline. There is growing evidence to suggest that business sectors which seem ideally placed to substitute information and communication technology (ICT) for travel, are actually generating more physical travel than other sectors. This paper develops a case study of the Irish software industry to exemplify why international travel is not diminishing in importance how and the ICT and business travel relationship is changing in this sector. The paper presents research findings that suggest that a cycle of substitution, generation and modification relationships have occurred as mobility interdependencies have developed.Peer Reviewe
Identification of determinants for rescheduling travel mode choice and transportation policies to reduce car use in urban areas
[EN] This paper presents a qualitative analysis about the determinants related to rescheduling travel mode
decisions during the activity scheduling process. Notably, we were interested to study changes between
intention and behavior. Data used came from an in-depth Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI)
follow up survey to habitual drivers carried out during the implementation of a panel survey. An
interpretative qualitative method based on Analytic Induction was used to cope with the complex nature
of rescheduling decisions and the characteristics of the data. The Theory of Planned Behavior has been
used to gain a better understanding of the reasons associated with rescheduling travel mode decisions
and to obtain a possible explanation of the phenomena studied. In our sample, 12 codes were identified
as the main determinants of travel mode changing. Main reasons for rescheduling a travel mode are
different considering gender, age, and the type of travel mode change. Main reasons for changing a
nonprivate preplanned travel mode to a private travel mode are different considering the type of travel
mode preplanned. New determinants of rescheduling decisions different from those associated with other
activity scheduling decisions previously identified emerge when analyzing travel mode changes. A
number of important sustainable transportation policies to reduce car use in urban areas are derived from

A novel framework for making dominant point detection methods non-parametric
Most dominant point detection methods require heuristically chosen control parameters. One of the commonly used control parameter is maximum deviation. This paper uses a theoretical bound of the maximum deviation of pixels obtained by digitization of a line segment for constructing a general framework to make most dominant point detection methods non-parametric. The derived analytical bound of the maximum deviation can be used as a natural bench mark for the line fitting algorithms and thus dominant point detection methods can be made parameter-independent and non-heuristic. Most methods can easily incorporate the bound. This is demonstrated using three categorically different dominant point detection methods. Such non-parametric approach retains the characteristics of the digital curve while providing good fitting performance and compression ratio for all the three methods using a variety of digital, non-digital, and noisy curves
Life events and travel behavior exploring the interrelationship using UK Household Longitudinal Study data
Recent research has indicated that changes in travel behavior are more likely at the time of major life events. However, much remains to be learned about the extent to which different life events trigger behavioral change and the conditions under which life events are more likely to trigger change. The UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS) offers a previously unavailable opportunity to investigate this topic for a large, representative sample of the UK population. UKHLS data were also linked to local spatial data drawn from the census and other sources to elucidate the effect of the spatial context on changes to travel behavior in association with life events. Findings from an exploratory analysis of data from UKHLS Waves 1 and 2 are presented first Transition tables demonstrate a strong association between changes in car ownership and commute mode and the following life events: employment changes, residential relocation, retirement, the birth of children, and changes in household structure. The results of logit models that relate the probability of an increase and a decrease in the number of cars owned to the occurrence of life events and that control for individual and household characteristics and spatial context are then shown. These models show, for example, that moves to urban and rural areas have contrasting effects on travel behavior and that having a new child in itself is not a significant influence on car ownership in the short term
