    Comparison of the formulations for a hub-and-spoke network design problem under congestion

    In this paper, we study the hub location problem with a power-law congestion cost and propose an exact solution approach. We formulate this problem in a conic quadratic form and use a strengthening method which rests on valid inequalities of perspective cuts in mixed integer nonlinear programming. In a numerical study, we compare two well known types of mathematical modeling in the hub-location problems which are solved with different branch and cut strategies. The strength and weakness of the formulations are summarized based on an extensive numerical study over the CAB data set

    Phase space polarization and the topological string: a case study

    We review and elaborate on our discussion in hep-th/0606112 on the interplay between the target space and the worldsheet description of the open topological string partition function, for the example of the conifold. We discuss the appropriate phase space and canonical form for the system. We find a map between choices of polarization and the worldsheet description, based on which we study the behavior of the partition function under canonical transformations.Comment: 18 pages, invited review for MPL

    Femtosecond Pump-Probe Studies of Reduced Graphene Oxide Thin Films

    The dynamics of photocarriers in reduced graphene oxide thin films is studied by using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Time dependent differential transmissions are measured with sample temperatures ranging from 9 to 300 K. At each sample temperature and probe delay, the sign of differential transmission remains positive. A fast energy relaxation of hot carriers is observed, and is found to be independent of sample temperature. Our experiments show that the carrier dynamics in reduced graphene oxide is similar to other types of graphene, and that the differential transmission is caused by phase-state filling of carriers.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    A complex computational model of the human ability to listen to certain signals in preference of others, also called the cocktail party phenomenon, is built on the basis of surveys into the relevant psychological, DSP, and neural network literature. This model is basically binaural and as such it makes use of both spectral data and spatial data in determining which speaker to listen to. The model uses two neural networks for filtering and speaker identification. Results from some experimentation with type and architecture of these networks are presented along with the results of the model. These results indicate that the model has a distinctive ability to focus on a particular speaker of choice

    A Precorrected-FFT Method for Coupled Electrostatic-Stokes Flow Problem

    We present the application of the boundary integral equation method for solving the motion of biological cell or particle under Stokes flow in the presence of electrostatic field. The huge dense matrix-vector product from the boundary integral method poses a computationally challenging problem for solving the large system of equations generated. In our work, we used the precorrected-FFT (pFFT) method to reduce the computational time and memory usage drastically, so that large scale simulations can be performed quickly on a personal computer.     Hot carrier diffusion in graphene

    We report an optical study of charge transport in graphene. Diffusion of hot carriers in epitaxial graphene and reduced graphene oxide samples are studied using an ultrafast pump-probe technique with a high spatial resolution. Spatiotemporal dynamics of hot carriers after a point-like excitation are monitored. Carrier diffusion coefficients of 11,000 and 5,500 squared centimeters per second are measured in epitaxial graphene and reduced graphene oxide samples, respectively, with a carrier temperature on the order of 3,600 K. The demonstrated optical techniques can be used for non-contact and non-invasive in-situ detection of transport properties of graphene.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    © Published by the BMJ Publishing Group Limited. Introduction Asthma is a variable lung condition whereby patients experience periods of controlled and uncontrolled asthma symptoms. Patients who experience prolonged periods of uncontrolled asthma have a higher incidence of exacerbations and increased morbidity and mortality rates. The ability to determine and to predict levels of asthma control and the occurrence of exacerbations is crucial in asthma management. Therefore, we aimed to determine to what extent physiological, behavioural and environmental data, obtained by mobile healthcare (mHealth) and home-monitoring sensors, as well as patient characteristics, can be used to predict episodes of uncontrolled asthma and the onset of asthma exacerbations. Methods and analysis In an 1-year observational study, patients will be provided with mHealth and home-monitoring systems to record daily measurements for the first-month (phase I) and weekly measurements during a follow-up period of 11 months (phase II). Our study population consists of 150 patients, aged ≥18 years, with a clinician's diagnosis of asthma, currently on controller medication, with uncontrolled asthma and/or minimally one exacerbation in the past 12 months. They will be enrolled over three participating centres, including Leiden, London and Manchester. Our main outcomes are the association between physiological, behavioural and environmental data and (1) the loss of asthma control and (2) the occurrence of asthma exacerbations. Ethics This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands and by the NHS ethics service in the UK.     Singapore’s bilingual policy is implemented to cater to the needs of its multilingual population. While English is the official language, the other main ethnic languages namely Malay, Chinese and Tamil are termed as Mother Tongue Languages (MTL). Educators have been challenged to teach the MTL effectively amidst the rampant use of English among younger generation especially in the 21st century. Experiential Learning has been one of the strategies to enhance MTL learning among students who are learners of the 21st century. This study looks at how Experiential learning specifically a planned heritage trail-based trip can affect students’ learning and influence their perception of the MTL as a living language. This method has been useful and students’ appreciation towards the learning of MTL has also improved. Although Experiential Learning is found to be effective, more steps and initiatives need to be taken and adopted in order to realise the vision of the bilingual policy in Singapore and to prepare students face future challenges by equipping them with 21st century competencies
