    Analysis of the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence, Resilience, and Family Functioning in Adolescents’ Sustainable Use of Alcohol and Tobacco

    The use of alcohol and tobacco is related to several variables, which act as risk or protective factors depending on the circumstances. The objectives of this study were to analyze the relationship between emotional intelligence, resilience, and family functioning in adolescent use of alcohol and tobacco, and to find emotional profiles for their use with regard to self-concept. The sample was made up of 317 high school students aged 13 to 18, who filled out the Brief Emotional Intelligence Inventory, the Resilience Scale for Adolescents, the APGAR Scale, the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire–Adolescents, and the Five-Factor Self-Concept Questionnaire. The results revealed that emotional intelligence and resilience, specifically stress management and family cohesion, were significant in the group of non-users. Family functioning acts as a predictor for the onset of use of tobacco and alcohol. Positive expectancies about drinking alcohol were found to be a risk factor, and the intrapersonal factor was found to be protective. Both stress management and family cohesion were protective factors against smoking. Furthermore, cluster analysis revealed the emotional profiles for users of both substances based on self-concept. Finally, the importance of the direction of the relationship between the variables studied for intervention in this problem should be mentioned. Responsible use by improving adolescent decision-making is one of the results expected from this type of intervention

    ntroducción. Numerosos estudios han encontrado alteraciones cognitivas en pacientes con historia de trastorno por consumo de alcohol, afectando su funcionamiento psicosocial y consecución de objetivos terapéuticos. Para identificar estas afectaciones se han utilizado pruebas de cribado cognitivo a pesar de que no han sido diseñadas para esta población, aumentando el riesgo de error. Objetivo. Valorar los principales déficits cognitivos en pacientes con historia de trastorno por consumo de alcohol, para desarrollar una prueba de cribado de alteraciones cognitivas específica para estos pacientes. Metodología. El TEDCA (Test de detección de deterioro cognitivo en alcoholismo) se diseñó en base a tres dimensiones: Cognición Viso-espacial, Memoria/Aprendizaje y Función Ejecutiva. El estudio se dividió en dos fases: En la fase 1 se seleccionaron las pruebas con mayor capacidad de discriminación entre pacientes con diferentes niveles de afectación cognitiva, y en la fase 2 se realizaron los análisis de validez y fiabilidad. La muestra estuvo formada por 248 participantes, 88 controles (fase 2) y 160 pacientes (fase 1: n=70 y fase 2: n=90). Resultados. El TEDCA obtuvo una fiabilidad elevada (alfa de Cronbach 0.754), el análisis factorial confirmó la presencia de las 3 dimensiones definidas previamente, dis- criminó entre pacientes y controles, y presenta una buena validez diagnóstica de afectación cognitiva. Conclusiones. El TEDCA es una nueva prueba de cribado, que permite identificar la posible presencia de afectación cognitiva en pacientes con historia de trastorno por onsumo de alcohol, que puede ser utilizado en los ámbitos de psiquiatría, atención primaria e investigación.post-print146 K

    What do TSECs provide in the menopausal hormone therapy?

    Tissue-selective estrogen complex (TSEC) is projected as a progestogen-free option for the treatment of estrogen deficiency symptoms in postmenopausal, non-hysterectomized women. TSEC combines the benefits of estrogen with a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), in this case bazedoxifene acetate (BZA), which has an antagonistic effect on the endometrium, thus avoiding the use of progestins. The authorized TSEC combination (conjugated estrogens [CE] 0.45mg/BZA 20mg) for the alleviation of vasomotor symptoms has been demonstrated in randomized clinical trials compared with placebo or menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). In addition, TSEC has shown improvements in quality of life and vaginal atrophy. In respect to MHT using progestins, the benefits of TSEC are found mainly in the bleeding pattern, amenorrhea rate, and reduction in mammary repercussion (i.e., breast tenderness and radiological density).     Thyroid hormones inhibit TGF-β signaling and attenuate fibrotic responses

    TGF-β, the most potent profibrogenic factor, acts by activating SMAD (mothers against decapentaplegic) transcription factors, which bind to SMAD-binding elements in target genes. Here, we show that the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3), through binding to its nuclear receptors (TRs), is able to antagonize transcriptional activation by TGF-β/SMAD. This antagonism involves reduced phosphorylation of SMADs and a direct interaction of the receptors with SMAD3 and SMAD4 that is independent of T3-mediated transcriptional activity but requires residues in the receptor DNA binding domain. T3 reduces occupancy of SMADbinding elements in response to TGF-β, reducing histone acetylation and inhibiting transcription. In agreement with this transcriptional cross-talk, T3 is able to antagonize fibrotic processes in vivo. Liver fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride is attenuated by thyroid hormone administration to mice, whereas aged TR knockout mice spontaneously accumulate collagen. Furthermore, skin fibrosis induced by bleomycin administration is also reduced by the thyroid hormones.     Characterization of Thermophilic Lignocellulolytic Microorganisms in Composting

    Composting involves the selection of a microbiota capable of resisting the high temperatures generated during the process and degrading the lignocellulose. A deep understanding of the thermophilic microbial community involved in such biotransformation is valuable to improve composting efficiency and to provide thermostable biomass-degrading enzymes for biorefinery. This study investigated the lignocellulose-degrading thermophilic microbial culturome at all the stages of plant waste composting, focusing on the dynamics, enzymes, and thermotolerance of each member of such a community. The results revealed that 58% of holocellulose (cellulose plus hemicellulose) and 7% of lignin were degraded at the end of composting. The whole fungal thermophilic population exhibited lignocellulose-degrading activity, whereas roughly 8–10% of thermophilic bacteria had this trait, although exclusively for hemicellulose degradation (xylan-degrading). Because of the prevalence of both groups, their enzymatic activity, and the wide spectrum of thermotolerance, they play a key role in the breakdown of hemicellulose during the entire process, whereas the degradation of cellulose and lignin is restricted to the activity of a few thermophilic fungi that persists at the end of the process. The xylanolytic bacterial isolates (159 strains) included mostly members of Firmicutes (96%) as well as a few representatives of Actinobacteria (2%) and Proteobacteria (2%). The most prevalent species were Bacillus licheniformis and Aeribacillus pallidus. Thermophilic fungi (27 strains) comprised only four species, namely Thermomyces lanuginosus, Talaromyces thermophilus, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Gibellulopsis nigrescens, of whom A. fumigatus and T. lanuginosus dominated. Several strains of the same species evolved distinctly at the stages of composting showing phenotypes with different thermotolerance and new enzyme expression, even not previously described for the species, as a response to the changing composting environment. Strains of Bacillus thermoamylovorans, Geobacillus thermodenitrificans, T. lanuginosus, and A. fumigatus exhibiting considerable enzyme activities were selected as potential candidates for the production of thermozymes. This study lays a foundation to further investigate the mechanisms of adaptation and acquisition of new traits among thermophilic lignocellulolytic microorganisms during composting as well as their potential utility in biotechnological processing

    The RADMED monitoring program as a tool for MSFD implementation: toward an ecosystem based approach

    In the western Mediterranean Sea, the RADMED monitoring programme is already conducting several of the evaluations required under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MFSD) along the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The different aspects of the ecosystem that are regularly sampled under this monitoring programme are the physical environment and the chemical and biological variables of the water column, together with the planktonic communities, biomass and structure. Moreover, determinations of some anthropogenic stressors on the marine environment, such as contaminants and microplastics, are under development. Data are managed and stored at the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) Data Centre that works under the Sea- DataNet infrastructure, and are also stored in the IBAMar database. In combination with remote sensing data, they are used to address open questions on the ecosystems in the western Mediterranean Sea.Postprint2,293

A central negative regulator of inflammatory responses is IL-10, an immunosuppressive cytokine with a wide variety of functions across multiple cell types. Although the role of IL-10 during infection appears to vary for different microorganisms, a largely detrimental role has been attributed to this cytokine during fungal disease. Given the variable risk of infection and its outcome among patients with comparable predisposing factors, susceptibility to invasive aspergillosis (IA) is thought to rely largely on genetic predisposition.
