    EMERGING BUSINESSES: THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE INDUSTRY CASE

    Emerging economies such as South Africa, only a few years out of apartheid, have been feeling the strains of socio-political change. While South Africa has experienced political reform, economic reform and access are slow to come. Currently, South Africa is the 7th largest producer of wine in the world. Although this industry is impressive, the apartheid era production practices have caused primarily the European consumers and media to be vocal about this issue. However, this concern has spread to other regions. The South African government and wine industry must respond to the external and internal market pressures and minimize transaction costs. Both entities want to increase wine exports and expand market share, however, given the socio-economic and political climate in the country neither knows how to manage this difficult process which emanates from deeply rooted distrust of groups within the country. Socio-political constraints facing previously disadvantaged groups (PDG) as emerging business owners need to be understood; and, measures which could be undertaken by government and industry need to be identified. The objectives of this research were to identify: institutional constraints and transaction costs faced by PDGs aspiring toward production and leadership roles in the wine industry; ways the government can collaborate with the KWV to build social capital and promote PDG ownership in the wine industry, thus minimizing social conflict; and, identify industry strategies to increase exports and international market share under the "New South Africa" banner. This analysis was based on primary and secondary data and information gathered on site. Several potential solutions were suggested for ways to include PDGs in the South African wine market while minimizing the impact on the market shares of existing producers.     Resonating bipolarons

    Electrons coupled to local lattice deformations end up in selftrapped localized molecular states involving their binding into bipolarons when the coupling is stronger than a certain critical value. Below that value they exist as essentially itinerant electrons. We propose that the abrupt crossover between the two regimes can be described by resonant pairing similar to the Feshbach resonance in binary atomic collision processes. Given the intrinsically local nature of the exchange of pairs of itinerant electrons and localized bipolarons, we demonstrate the occurrence of such a resonance on a finite-size cluster made out of metallic atoms surrounding a polaronic ligand center.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Europhysics Letter

    Harnessing Marine Renewable Energy from Poole Harbour: Case Study

    Global warming and its impact on our environment, society, economies and security is one of the fundamental concerns of our time. In response, the United Kingdom government has put in place a legally binding target of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions on 1990 levels by 2050. The United Kingdom will need to achieve a tenfold expansion of energy supply from renewable sources by 2020 to meet its share of the European Union renewable energy target. The marine and coastal environment’s renewable energy potential in Britain is high. It is estimated that it has 50% of the tidal energy, 35% of wave and 40% of wind resources in the European Union. Use of geothermal resources using heat pump technology is the least evolved sector, but in 2010 contributed to 0.7 TWh of energy and it is believed that non domestic heat pumps could contribute up to 22 TWh by 2020. In the Southwest of England, Poole Harbour has been recognised as a potential, highly predictable source of tidal and heat energy. Local groups are embarking on a feasibility study for harnessing this energy for the benefit of the community. The purpose of this article is to examine the potential conflict of interest between the laudable aims of promoting the use of renewable energy and of safeguarding ecosystems and their biodiversity. Using Poole Harbour as a case study, it will consider the environmental and economic costs and benefits of a Community Renewable Energy project (the Poole Tidal Energy Partnership) in the context of an area subject to a number of statutory and non-statutory designations to protect nationally and internationally important habitats and species. The paper identifies key environmental legislation, including spatial planning law and policy, which will facilitate exploring whether there is potential for reconciling what may be perceived as competing objectives for sustainable development

    ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE, LEADERSHIP STYLE AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AS PREDICTORS OF QUALITY OF WORK LIFE AMONG BANK WORKERS IN IBADAN, NIGERIA

    The effects of organizational climate, leadership style and emotional intelligence on the quality of work life were investigated in this study. The participants were two hundred and fifty bank workers drawn from selected commercial banks within Ibadan metropolis. Three research questions and hypotheses were raised in the study. Four valid and standardized instruments were administered on the participants. Pearson product moment correlation, multiple regression analysis and analysis of variance were used to analyse data at 0.05 level of significance. The result shows that the three independent variables when combined were effective in predicting quality of work life. The three variables contributed significantly to quality of work life of the participants with leadership styles as the most potent predictor in the study.. the result also show there was also a significant difference in quality of work life among participants with Democratic, Autocratic and Laissez faire leadership with contributions of democratic style being the most potent. Based on the findings, it is suggested that management should take into cognizance the importance and roles of emotional intelligence and leadership styles in enhancing quality of work life among employee

    Bounded Verification with On-the-Fly Discrepancy Computation

    Simulation-based verification algorithms can provide formal safety guarantees for nonlinear and hybrid systems. The previous algorithms rely on user provided model annotations called discrepancy function, which are crucial for computing reachtubes from simulations. In this paper, we eliminate this requirement by presenting an algorithm for computing piece-wise exponential discrepancy functions. The algorithm relies on computing local convergence or divergence rates of trajectories along a simulation using a coarse over-approximation of the reach set and bounding the maximal eigenvalue of the Jacobian over this over-approximation. The resulting discrepancy function preserves the soundness and the relative completeness of the verification algorithm. We also provide a coordinate transformation method to improve the local estimates for the convergence or divergence rates in practical examples. We extend the method to get the input-to-state discrepancy of nonlinear dynamical systems which can be used for compositional analysis. Our experiments show that the approach is effective in terms of running time for several benchmark problems, scales reasonably to larger dimensional systems, and compares favorably with respect to available tools for nonlinear models.Comment: 24 page

    Pemurnian Kondensat Hasil Pembuatan Gula Aren (Arenga Pinnata) Dengan Menggunakan Arang Aktif

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memproses kondensat hasil pengolahan gula aren melalui proses pemurnian dengan menggunakan adsorben arang aktif dari tempurung kelapa, menganalisis komponen kimia penyebab bau pada kondensat dengan teknik HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) serta menganalisis daya serap beberapa jenis arang aktif dari tempurung kelapa. Arang aktif yang digunakan memiliki daya serap yang bervariasi, yaitu 37-45%, 45-55%, 56-63% dan 70-85%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa arang aktif dari tempurung kelapa dapat digunakan dalam proses pemurnian kondensat dan berdasarkan hasil analisis HPLC (Hig Performance Liquid Chromatography) terdapat tiga senyawa kimia yang menyebabkan bau pada konsendat. Arang aktif yang memiliki kapasitas adsorpsi yang besar yaitu arang aktif dengan daya serap 70-85% mampu menghilangkan bau hingga volume kondensat 4.497mL/g arang aktif

    Root asymptotics of spectral polynomials for the Lame operator

    The study of polynomial solutions to the classical Lam\'e equation in its algebraic form, or equivalently, of double-periodic solutions of its Weierstrass form has a long history. Such solutions appear at integer values of the spectral parameter and their respective eigenvalues serve as the ends of bands in the boundary value problem for the corresponding Schr\"odinger equation with finite gap potential given by the Weierstrass ℘\wp-function on the real line. In this paper we establish several natural (and equivalent) formulas in terms of hypergeometric and elliptic type integrals for the density of the appropriately scaled asymptotic distribution of these eigenvalues when the integer-valued spectral parameter tends to infinity.
