Simple fatigue testing machine for fiber-reinforced polymer composite

    Get PDF
Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites seem to be the best options in many structural applications. Such applications are often exposed to fatigue loads, and therefore, the fatigue behavior of the composites must be studied in order to achieve a proper design. This is fulfilled by means of an experimental characterization, in which a lot of specimens are tested because of the several parameters involved (i.e., fiber/matrix ratio, fiber orientation, staking sequence, etc.). Besides, the fatigue tests must be carried out at low frequencies, in order to avoid temperature increments in the polymer matrix, which would change the mechanical properties of the composite. Consequently, considerable time is consumed to perform a complete set of tests and, when using conventional servohydraulic testing machines, costs rise notably. A machine to perform fatigue tests of composite materials under constant amplitude load cycles and a wide range of load ratios is presented in this paper. This machine exhibits as main goals the fulfillment of the corresponding standard requirements, a very low cost compared to conventional servohydraulic testing machines and, consequently, makes reasonably priced to have several machines testing specimens simultaneously, in order to reduce the necessary time to complete the whole characterization.Fil: Pach, Esteban.

The incomplete pass-through of exchange rates to prices is a well-documented phenomenon. Firms respond optimally to exchange rate shocks by adjusting margins and buying inputs from regions with more advantageous terms of trade. Consumers, in turn, substitute goods that become more expensive for relatively cheaper goods after an exchange rate shock. We use data from the market for new cars in Colombia to empirically analyze the determinants of incomplete pass- through after a large depreciation of the local currency. We estimate a structural oligopoly model that nests the optimal reactions of firms and consumers to as- sess their relative importance in explaining the lack of response of retail prices to the exchange rate shock. We find that, in relative terms, the most important factor explaining incomplete pass-through is consumer substitution, followed by strategic interaction between sellers.

Development of a thermosensitive hydrogel based on Polaxamer 407 and gellan gum with inclusion complexes (Sulfobutylated-β-cyclodextrin-Farnesol) as a local drug delivery system

This work proposes the development of a thermosensitive local drug release system based on Polaxamer 407, also known as Pluronic® F-127 (PF-127), Gellan Gum (GG) and the inclusion complex Sulfobutylated-β-cyclodextrin (CD) with Farnesol (FOH). Rheological properties of the hydrogels and their degradation were studied. According to the rheological results, a solution of 20% w/v of PF-127 forms a strong gel with a gelling temperature of about 25 °C (storage modulus of 15,000 Pa). The addition of the GG increased the storage modulus (optimal concentration of 0.5 % w/v) twofold without modifying the gelling temperature. Moreover, including 0.5% w/v of GG also increased 6 times the degradation time of the hydrogel. Regarding the inclusion complex, the addition of free CD decreased the viscosity and the gel strength since polymer chains were included in CD cavity without affecting the gelling temperature. Contrarily, the inclusion complex CD-FOH did not significantly modify any property of the formulation because the FOH was hosted in the CD. Furthermore, a mathematical model was developed to adjust the degradation time. This model highlights that the addition of the GG decreases the number of released chains from the polymeric network (which coincides with an increase in the storage modulus) and that the free CD reduces the degradation rate, protecting the polymeric chains. Finally, FOH release was quantified with a specific device, that was designed and printed for this type of system, observing a sustainable drug release (similar to FOH aqueous solubility, 8 μM) dependent on polymer degradation

Moving forward on u-healthcare: A framework for patient-centric

Delivering remote healthcare services without deteriorating the ‘patient experience’ requires building highly usable and adaptive applications. Efficient context data collection and management make possible to infer extra knowledge on the user’s situation, making easier the design of these advanced ubiquitous applications. This contribution, part of a work in progress which aims at building an operative AmI middleware, presents a generic architecture to provide u-healthcare services, to be delivered both in mobile and home environments. In particular, we address the design of the Context Management Component (CMC), the module that takes context data from the sensing layer and performs data fusion and reasoning to build an aggregated ‘context image’. We especially explain the requirements on data modelling and the functional features that are imposed to the CMC. The resulting logical multilayered architecture -composed by acquisition and fusion, inference and reasoning levels- is detailed, and the technologies needed to develop the Context Management Component are finally specifie

The objective of the article is to analyze the elaboration process and the characteristics of the update to 2030 of the Argentine Wine Strategic Plan (PEVI 2030). For this, its writing methodology, the participation mechanisms developed, the actors involved, the problems it faced and its content are described. The analysis is carried out based on bibliography on strategic planning in general and for the wine sector in particular, and identifies the way in which territorial prospective was incorporated during the process. The article concludes that Argentina's PEVI 2030 is a case of planning for the development of an agro-industry that must compete in national and international markets and comply with sustainability principles. For the elaboration of the Plan, a methodology was proposed with broad participatory mechanisms that encountered obstacles due to the pandemic, due to the reluctance of some actors to be part of the process and due to the lack of a final stage of prioritization of actions. However, it was possible to build a mission and prospective vision of a decade, with objectives, strategies and strategic actions, with a national scope and for all wine-based chains and with an entity identified for its implementation.

A distributed topology for identifying anomalies in an industrial environment

The devastating consequences of climate change have resulted in the promotion of clean energies, being the wind energy the one with greater potential. This technology has been developed in recent years following different strategic plans, playing special attention to wind generation. In this sense, the use of bicomponent materials in wind generator blades and housings is a widely spread procedure. However, the great complexity of the process followed to obtain this kind of materials hinders the problem of detecting anomalous situations in the plant, due to sensors or actuators malfunctions. This has a direct impact on the features of the final product, with the corresponding influence in the durability and wind generator performance. In this context, the present work proposes the use of a distributed anomaly detection system to identify the source of the wrong operation. With this aim, five different one-class techniques are considered to detect deviations in three plant components located in a bicomponent mixing machine installation: the flow meter, the pressure sensor and the pump speed.CITIC, as a Research Center of the university System of Galicia, is funded by Conselleria de Education, Universidade e Formacion Profesional of the Xunta de Galicia through the European regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Secretaria Xeral de Universidades (Ref.
