    Get PDF
The socioecological relevance of the Magdalena Medio (Colombia) region wetlands and the dynamics of their degradation reveal the need to develop restoration processes that guarantee the land's sustainability as a tool for the transformation of social realities. The study presents two examples for the development of ecological restoration participative experiences in dry and wet tropical forests and aquatic habitats of the region through the implementation of strategies that combine techniques such as nucleation, enrichment and succession facilitation. To date these experiences have allowed the identification of 32 species with potential for restoration, standing out among these Tabebuia rosea, Hura crepitans, Phyllanthus elsiae and Spondia mombin as strong agents for ecological succession processes in order to recover and generate local ecological knowledge, materialize decisions related to planning and environmental protection, and revamp the role of the artisanal fishermen in the conservation and governance of the region´s wetlands

The article analyzes the work done by community radio stations in the central region of Ecuador in order to promote social progress through the promotion of participatory processes that guarantee the empowerment of the community in the administration and creation of radio content. In this way, qualitative methodologies are used through interviews applied to 12 directors and 36 broadcasters in order to identify the management model of community radio stations, how the staff working in these stations are linked, the types of financing with which they are financed, the various strategies for participation in radio programming and the actions undertaken by the Government of Ecuador in favour of the radio stations studied. Finally, it is determined that added to the well-known economic problem, it is evident that there are no horizontal communication strategies that facilitate the empowerment of citizens around the media. The Organic Law on Communication does not diversify community radio stations so that, depending on their differences, an equitable intervention in the radio spectrum is promoted. Likewise, it does not promote the empowerment of people as volunteers. The issue of training is a need that can be satisfied from the academy

Abstract of: AMI Annual Conference 2006, March 25-29Chronic exposure to opiates has been shown to influence neural activity in brain regions related to the rewarding process. It also induces neuroadaptations which lead to addiction. We have found in previous works that morphine self-administration produces neuroadaptative changes in brain areas of Fischer-344 rats. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of chronic self-administration of morphine on cerebral glucose metabolismPublicad

To establish the prevalence of positivity and conversion rate of the tuberculin skin test in workers of our hospital, and to describe the related demographic and occupational characteristics. Materials and Methods An observational, descriptive study was conducted in a cohort of hospital workers who underwent the tuberculin skin test. The positivity of the test was defined as a result of greater than or equal to 10 mm, and conversion was defined as an increase of 6 or 10 mm with respect to the initial test. Results Prevalence of 23.7 % and incidence of conversion of 13.6 % for the major cut-off point of 10 mm, and 23 % for the lesser cut-off point of 6 mm, was found. The age of the subjects was related to the conversion, but there was no relation with occupation. Conclusions The probability of tuberculosis transmission in health-care workers is higher than in the general population. Promotion and prevention measures must be implemented to decrease the transmission and to increase awareness of tuberculosis related to occupational activities

First record of the miniature catfish Malacoglanis gelatinosus Myers & Weitzman, 1966 (Siluriformes, Trichomycteridae) in the Orinoco river basin

Malacoglanis gelatinosus, a species of miniature catfish of the family Trichomycteridae, is only known from 4 specimens from the Amazon basin. Recently, we collected 3 specimens from the upper basin of the Meta River, a tributary of the Orinoco. This is the first record of M. gelatinosus from the Orinoco river basin, which significantly expands the known geographic distribution of this species, making it one of the most broadly distributed species within the subfamily Sarcoglanidinae. High-resolution photographs of specimens, remarks on character variation, and an updated distribution in Colombia are provided

Guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of Hunter Syndrome for clinicians in Latin America

    Get PDF
This review aims to provide clinicians in Latin America with the most current information on the clinical aspects, diagnosis, and management of Hunter syndrome, a serious and progressive disease for which specific treatment is available. Hunter syndrome is a genetic disorder where iduronate-2-sulfatase (I2S), an enzyme that degrades glycosaminoglycans, is absent or deficient. Clinical manifestations vary widely in severity and involve multiple organs and tissues. An attenuated and a severe phenotype are recognized depending on the degree of cognitive impairment. Early diagnosis is vital for disease management. Clinical signs common to children with Hunter syndrome include inguinal hernia, frequent ear and respiratory infections, facial dysmorphisms, macrocephaly, bone dysplasia, short stature, sleep apnea, and behavior problems. Diagnosis is based on screening urinary glycosaminoglycans and confirmation by measuring I2S activity and analyzing I2S gene mutations. Idursulfase (recombinant I2S) (Elaprase®, Shire) enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), designed to address the underlying enzyme deficiency, is approved treatment and improves walking capacity and respiratory function, and reduces spleen and liver size and urinary glycosaminoglycan levels. Additional measures, responding to the multi-organ manifestations, such as abdominal/inguinal hernia repair, carpal tunnel surgery, and cardiac valve replacement, should also be considered. Investigational treatment options such as intrathecal ERT are active areas of research, and bone marrow transplantation is in clinical practice. Communication among care providers, social workers, patients and families is essential to inform and guide their decisions, establish realistic expectations, and assess patients' responses.Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre Serviço de Génetica MédicaUniversidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul Departamento de GéneticaInstituto Nacional de Genética Médica PopulacionalAsociación Colombiana de Neurología InfantilInstituto Mexicano del Seguro SocialInstituto de Estudios AvanzadosHospital de NiñosLa Misericordia University HospitalUniversidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Centro de Referência em Erros Inatos do MetabolismoUniversidade Federal de BahiaUniversidad de Chile Instituto de Nutrición y Tecnología de los AlimentosHospital Italiano Instituto de Genética MédicaHospital Pequeno Príncipe Departamento de NeuropediatraHospital Universitario AustralUNIFESP, Centro de Referência em Erros Inatos do MetabolismoSciEL
