Background: The association between depression, anxiety, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is still unclear. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders among women with PCOS compared to women without it. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to November 27, 2015. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they were original reports in which the rates of mood (bipolar disorder, dysthymia, or major depressive disorder), obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, anxiety disorders or psychotic disorders, somatic symptom and related disorders, or eating disorders had been investigated among women with an established diagnosis of PCOS and compared with women without PCOS. Psychiatric diagnosis should have been established by means of a structured diagnostic interview or through a validated screening tool. Data were extracted and pooled using random effects models. Results: Six studies were included in the meta-analysisof these, five reported the rates of anxiety and six provided data on the rates of depression. The rate of subjects with anxiety symptoms was higher in patients with PCOS compared to women without PCOS (odds ratio (OR) =2.7695% confidence interval (CI) 1.26 to 6.02Log OR = 1.013P=0.011). The rate of subjects with depressive symptoms was higher in patients with PCOS compared to women without PCOS (OR = 3.5195% CI 1.97 to 6.24Log OR =1.255P < 0.001). Conclusion: Anxiety and depression symptoms are more prevalent in patients with PCOS.National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPqConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico) [305274/2014-7]Department of Psychiatry, Federal University of São Paulo (Escola Paulista de Medicina – UNIFESP), São Paulo, SP, BrazilDepartment of Psychiatry, Fortaleza University, Fortaleza, Ceará, BrazilLaboratory of Molecular Psychiatry Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, BrazilDepartment of Psychiatry, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, BrazilDepartment of Psychiatry, Federal University of São Paulo (Escola Paulista de Medicina – UNIFESP), R Borges Lagoa 570, BR-04038020 Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil.CNPq: 305274/2014-7Web of Scienc

Cognitive function, cerebral microbleeds, radiotherapy, and bevacizumab in survivors of pediatric brain tumors

We read with great interest a recent paper published by Roddy et al showing a high (48.8%) 5-year cumulative incidence of cerebral microbleeds (CMB) and its association with cognitive dysfunction in a group with pediatric brain tumors who received cranial radiation therapy (CRT).1 We believe that exposing the association of CMB (or the associated underlying microvascular pathology) with cognitive impairment in this population will help draw attention to the importance of the topic in this specific growing population.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Propondo uma Biblioteca Digital Móvel para o contexto de Saúde: Criação e Refinamento do Protótipos de Alta Fidelidade em Um Projeto Real

Get PDF

Lysosome-mediated processing of chromatin in senescence

Get PDF
Cellular senescence is a stable proliferation arrest, a potent tumor suppressor mechanism, and a likely contributor to tissue aging. Cellular senescence involves extensive cellular remodeling, including of chromatin structure. Autophagy and lysosomes are important for recycling of cellular constituents and cell remodeling. Here we show that an autophagy/lysosomal pathway processes chromatin in senescent cells. In senescent cells, lamin A/C–negative, but strongly γ-H2AX–positive and H3K27me3-positive, cytoplasmic chromatin fragments (CCFs) budded off nuclei, and this was associated with lamin B1 down-regulation and the loss of nuclear envelope integrity. In the cytoplasm, CCFs were targeted by the autophagy machinery. Senescent cells exhibited markers of lysosomal-mediated proteolytic processing of histones and were progressively depleted of total histone content in a lysosome-dependent manner. In vivo, depletion of histones correlated with nevus maturation, an established histopathologic parameter associated with proliferation arrest and clinical benignancy. We conclude that senescent cells process their chromatin via an autophagy/lysosomal pathway and that this might contribute to stability of senescence and tumor suppression

Museums and cradles of diversity are geographically coincident for narrowly distributed Neotropical snakes

Factors driving the spatial configuration of centres of endemism have long been a topic of broad interest and debate. Due to different eco-evolutionary processes, these highly biodiverse areas may harbour different amounts of ancient and recently diverged organisms (paleo- and neo-endemism, respectively). Patterns of endemism still need to be measured at distinct phylogenetic levels for most clades and, consequently, little is known about the distribution, the age and the causes of such patterns. Here we tested for the presence of centres with high phylogenetic endemism (PE) in the highly diverse Neotropical snakes, testing the age of these patterns (paleo- or neo-endemism), and the presence of PE centres with distinct phylogenetic composition. We then tested whether PE is predicted by topography, by climate (seasonality, stability, buffering and relictualness), or biome size. We found that most areas of high PE for Neotropical snakes present a combination of both ancient and recently diverged diversity, which is distributed mostly in the Caribbean region, Central America, the Andes, the Atlantic Forest and on scattered highlands in central Brazil. Turnover of lineages is higher across Central America, resulting in more phylogenetically distinct PE centres compared to South America, which presents a more phylogenetically uniform snake fauna. Finally, we found that elevational range (topographic roughness) is the main predictor of PE, especially for paleo-endemism, whereas low paleo-endemism levels coincide with areas of high climatic seasonality. Our study highlights the importance of mountain systems to both ancient and recent narrowly distributed diversity. Mountains are both museums and cradles of snake diversity in the Neotropics, which has important implications for conservation in this region.Fil: Azevedo, Josué Anderson Rêgo.
