Latino Parents\u27 Motivations for Involvement in Their Children\u27s Schooling: An Exploratory Study
This study examines the ability of a theoretical model of the parental involvement process to predict Latino parents\u27 involvement in their children\u27s schooling. A sample of Latino parents (N = 147) of grade 1 through 6 children in a large urban public school district in the southeastern United States responded to surveys assessing model-based predictors of involvement (personal psychological beliefs, contextual motivators of involvement, perceived life-context variables), as well as levels of home- and school-based involvement. Home-based involvement was predicted by partnership-focused role construction (a personal psychological belief) and by specific invitations from the student (a contextual motivator of involvement). School-based involvement was predicted by specific invitations from the teacher (a contextual motivator) and by perceptions of time and energy for involvement (a life-context variable). Computer-Aided Detection and diagnosis for prostate cancer based on mono and multi-parametric MRI: A review
International audienceProstate cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer of men all over the world. In the last decades, new imaging techniques based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) have been developed improving diagnosis.In practise, diagnosis can be affected by multiple factors such as observer variability and visibility and complexity of the lesions. In this regard, computer-aided detection and computer-aided diagnosis systemshave been designed to help radiologists in their clinical practice. Research on computer-aided systems specifically focused for prostate cancer is a young technology and has been part of a dynamic field ofresearch for the last ten years. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive review of the state of the art in this lapse of time, focusing on the different stages composing the work-flow of a computer-aidedsystem. We also provide a comparison between studies and a discussion about the potential avenues for future research. In addition, this paper presents a new public online dataset which is made available to theresearch community with the aim of providing a common evaluation framework to overcome some of the current limitations identified in this survey
Mechanism for Initiation of Food Allergy: Dependence on skin barrier mutations and environmental allergen co-stimulation
Background
Mechanisms for the development of food allergy in neonates are unknown but are clearly linked in patient populations to a genetic predisposition towards skin barrier defects. Whether skin barrier defects functionally contribute to development of food allergy is unknown.
Objective
The purpose of the study was to determine whether skin barrier mutations, that are primarily heterozygous in patient populations, contribute to the development of food allergy.
Methods
Mice heterozygous for the Flgft and Tmem79ma mutations were skin sensitized with environmental allergens and food allergens. After sensitization, mice received oral challenge with food allergen and then inflammation, inflammatory mediators, and anaphylaxis were measured.
Results
We define development of inflammation, inflammatory mediators, and food allergen-induced anaphylaxis in neonatal mice with skin barrier mutations following brief concurrent cutaneous exposure to food and environmental allergens. Moreover, neonates of allergic mothers have elevated responses to suboptimal sensitization with food allergens. Importantly, the responses to food allergens by these neonatal mice were dependent on genetic defects in skin barrier function and on exposure to environmental allergens. Blockade of ST2 during skin sensitization inhibited development of anaphylaxis, antigen-specific IgE and inflammatory mediators. The neonatal anaphylactic responses and antigen-specific IgE were also inhibited by oral pre-exposure to food allergen but, interestingly, this was blunted by concurrent pre-exposure of the skin to environmental allergen.
Conclusion
These studies uncover mechanisms for food allergy sensitization and anaphylaxis in neonatal mice that are consistent with features of human early life exposures and genetics in clinical food allergy and demonstrate that changes in barrier function drive development of anaphylaxis to food allergen
Doxorubicin In Vivo Rapidly Alters Expression and Translation of Myocardial Electron Transport Chain Genes, Leads to ATP Loss and Caspase 3 Activation
BackgroundDoxorubicin is one of the most effective anti-cancer drugs but its use is limited by cumulative cardiotoxicity that restricts lifetime dose. Redox damage is one of the most accepted mechanisms of toxicity, but not fully substantiated. Moreover doxorubicin is not an efficient redox cycling compound due to its low redox potential. Here we used genomic and chemical systems approaches in vivo to investigate the mechanisms of doxorubicin cardiotoxicity, and specifically test the hypothesis of redox cycling mediated cardiotoxicity.Methodology/principal findingsMice were treated with an acute dose of either doxorubicin (DOX) (15 mg/kg) or 2,3-dimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (DMNQ) (25 mg/kg). DMNQ is a more efficient redox cycling agent than DOX but unlike DOX has limited ability to inhibit gene transcription and DNA replication. This allowed specific testing of the redox hypothesis for cardiotoxicity. An acute dose was used to avoid pathophysiological effects in the genomic analysis. However similar data were obtained with a chronic model, but are not specifically presented. All data are deposited in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Pathway and biochemical analysis of cardiac global gene transcription and mRNA translation data derived at time points from 5 min after an acute exposure in vivo showed a pronounced effect on electron transport chain activity. This led to loss of ATP, increased AMPK expression, mitochondrial genome amplification and activation of caspase 3. No data gathered with either compound indicated general redox damage, though site specific redox damage in mitochondria cannot be entirely discounted.Conclusions/significanceThese data indicate the major mechanism of doxorubicin cardiotoxicity is via damage or inhibition of the electron transport chain and not general redox stress. There is a rapid response at transcriptional and translational level of many of the genes coding for proteins of the electron transport chain complexes. Still though ATP loss occurs with activation caspase 3 and these events probably account for the heart damage
Empirical approach to the analysis of university student absenteeism. Proposal of a questionnaire for students to evaluate the possible causes
Works on student absenteeism in the universities have not been preferential for the authors in the field of educational research. Usually, what has been made is an approach to the available absenteeism data as an intervening variable or as a variable characteristic of the educational process, but not as a dependent variable in the strict sense of the term. In this work, we intend to make an empirical approach to the possible reasons of student absenteeism. There is a double point of view: the students" and the professors"; the reasons that justify it according to its protagonists are studied. This paper focuses on the six university degrees taught at the School of Economy and Business of the University of Barcelona (Facultat d"Economia i Empresa de la Universitat de Barcelona). An"ad-hoc" questionnaire has been prepared and the opinions of 1,162 undergraduates have been analyzed. The reasons given by each population differ in hierarchy and motivations
Randomized phase II trial of bevacizumab plus everolimus versus bevacizumab alone for recurrent or persistent ovarian, fallopian tube or peritoneal carcinoma: An NRG oncology/gynecologic oncology group study
PURPOSE:
Bevacizumab (BV) monotherapy leads to compensatory upregulation of multiple signaling pathways, resulting in mTOR activation. We evaluated combining BV and everolimus (EV), an mTOR kinase inhibitor, to circumvent BV-resistance in women with recurrent or persistent ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancer (OC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
Eligible OC patients had measurable (RECIST1.1) or detectable disease, 1-3 prior regimens, performance status (PS) 0-2, and no prior m-TOR inhibitor. All patients received BV 10 mg/kg IV every 2wks. Patients were randomized (1:1) to oral EV (10 mg daily) or placebo stratified by platinum-free interval (PFI), measurable disease and prior BV. Primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS); secondary endpoints included safety and response.
RESULTS:
150 patients were randomized to BV with (n = 75) and without (n = 75) EV. Arms were well-balanced for age (median 63: range 28-92), PS (0: 73%, 1-2: 27%), prior regimens (1: 37%, 2: 47%, 3: 16%), prior BV (11%), PFI (<6mos: 65%) and measurable disease (81%). The BV + EV vs BV median PFS was 5.9 vs 4.5 months (hazard ratio [HR] 0.95 (95% CI, 0.66-1.37, p = 0.39)). Median OS was 16.6 vs 17.3 months (HR 1.16 (95% CI, 0.72-1.87, p = 0.55). Objective measurable responses were higher with BV + EV (22% vs 12%). Study removal due to toxicity was higher with BV + EV (29% vs 12%). Toxicity (≥grade 3) from BV + EV were "other GI (mucositis)" (23 vs 1%) and "metabolic/nutrition" (19 vs. 7%); common ≥ grade 2 toxicities with BV + EV were cytopenia, nausea, fatigue and rash.
CONCLUSION:
The combination regimen (BV + EV) did not significantly reduce the hazard of progression or death relative to BV and was associated with higher rates of adverse events and study discontinuation when compared to BV alone
Catastrophizing and Parental Response to Child Symptom Complaints
This study investigated whether catastrophic thinking about pain by children with functional abdominal pain or by their parents is associated with health outcomes in the child. Subjects were 132 parent-child dyads. Child catastrophizing predicted child depression, anxiety and functional disability. Parents’ catastrophizing cognitions about their own pain predicted self-reported protective responses to their children’s abdominal pain (responding in ways that encourage illness behavior). Protectiveness, in turn, predicted child functional disability. All findings held despite controlling for child age, gender, and symptom severity. These results suggest that catastrophic cognitions play an important role in how children and parents cope and respond to functional abdominal pain, and may have implications for assessment and treatment in the clinical setting
Event Horizons in Numerical Relativity II: Analyzing the Horizon
We present techniques and methods for analyzing the dynamics of event
horizons in numerically constructed spacetimes. There are three classes of
analytical tools we have investigated. The first class consists of proper
geometrical measures of the horizon which allow us comparison with perturbation
theory and powerful global theorems. The second class involves the location and
study of horizon generators. The third class includes the induced horizon
2-metric in the generator comoving coordinates and a set of membrane-paradigm
like quantities. Applications to several distorted, rotating, and colliding

Comparison of two methods to identify live benthic foraminifera : a test between Rose Bengal and CellTracker Green with implications for stable isotope paleoreconstructions

Bengal, a stain that reacts with both live and dead cytoplasm. CellTracker Green CMFDA is a
fluorogenic probe causing live cells to fluoresce after proper incubation. To determine the more
accurate viability method, we conducted a direct comparison of Rose Bengal staining with
CellTracker Green labeling. Eight multicore tops were analyzed from Florida Margin (SE
United States; 248-751 m water depths), near Great Bahama Bank (259-766 m), and off the
Carolinas (SE United States; 220 m, 920 m). On average, less than half the Rose Bengal-stained
foraminifera were actually living when collected. Thus, while Rose Bengal can significantly
overestimate abundance, combined analyses of CellTracker Green and Rose Bengal can provide
insights on population dynamics and effects of episodic events. Initial stable isotope analyses
indicate that the CellTracker Green method does not significantly affect these important

The USNO-B Catalog
USNO-B is an all-sky catalog that presents positions, proper motions,
magnitudes in various optical passbands, and star/galaxy estimators for
1,042,618,261 objects derived from 3,643,201,733 separate observations. The
data were obtained from scans of 7,435 Schmidt plates taken for the various sky
surveys during the last 50 years. USNO-B1.0 is believed to provide all-sky
coverage, completeness down to V = 21, 0.2 arcsecond astrometric accuracy at
J2000, 0.3 magnitude photometric accuracy in up to five colors, and 85%
accuracy for distinguishing stars from non-stellar objects. A brief discussion
