Several Otarid rookeries are located along the coasts of the Península Mitre, at the Eastern end of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, which were the subject of intensive exploitation by European, American and Criollo sealers since the 18th century. In the 1940s, a factory for extracting leather and oil from these animals was established in Thetis Bay. Remains of its facilities are still preserved, along with large accumulations of bones from animals slaughtered there. This paper provides historical data on the exploitation of pinnipeds in Península Mitre and on the methods for obtaining and exploiting these marine mammals at an industrial scale. The paper likewise includes the zooarchaeological and taphonomic analyses of pinniped bonebeds located in a sector of Thetis Bay. The presented results allow us to delve into some previous proposals which argue that these bonebeds are the product of a secondary accumulation - generated by tidal action - of remains discarded after the animal slaughter at the factoryFil: Vazquez, Martin Miguel. Psychological Effects of a 1-Month Meditation Retreat on Experienced Meditators: The Role of Non-attachment

    Get PDF
Background: There are few studies devoted to assessing the impact of meditation-intensive retreats on the well-being, positive psychology, and personality of experienced meditators. We aimed to assess whether a 1-month Vipassana retreat: (a) would increase mindfulness and well-being; (b) would increase prosocial personality traits; and (c) whether psychological changes would be mediated and/or moderated by non-attachment. Method: A controlled, non-randomized, pre-post-intervention trial was used. The intervention group was a convenience sample (n = 19) of experienced meditators who participated in a 1-month Vipassana meditation retreat. The control group (n = 19) comprised matched experienced meditators who did not take part in the retreat. During the retreat, the mean duration of daily practice was 8-9 h, the diet was vegetarian and silence was compulsory. The Experiences Questionnaire (EQ), Non-attachment Scale (NAS), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Temperament Character Inventory Revised (TCI-R-67), Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Self-Other Four Immeasurables (SOFI) and the MINDSENS Composite Index were administered. ANCOVAs and linear regression models were used to assess pre-post changes and mediation/moderation effects. Results: Compared to controls, retreatants showed increases in non-attachment, observing, MINDSENS, positive-affect, balance-affect, and cooperativeness; and decreases in describing, negative-others, reward-dependence and self-directedness. Non-attachment had a mediating role in decentring, acting aware, non-reactivity, negative-affect, balance-affect and self-directedness; and a moderating role in describing and positive others, with both mediating and moderating effects on satisfaction with life. Conclusions: A 1-month Vipassana meditation retreat seems to yield improvements in mindfulness, well-being, and personality, even in experienced meditators. Non-attachment might facilitate psychological improvements of meditation, making it possible to overcome possible ceiling effects ascribed to non-intensive practices

Diagnosis of pulmonary embolism in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a cross-sectional study

Introduction: Pulmonary embolism (PE) remains a frequent complication in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is unclear that the extent to which the traditional risk stratifying scores for PE are accurate in this population. Methods: Cross-sectional study of adult patients with COPD and suspected PE included in an Institutional Registry of Thromboembolic Disease at a tertiary teaching hospital in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. We estimated the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AU-ROC), sensitivity and specificity of the Wells and Geneva scores using a positive computed tomography angiography as the gold standard for PE. We also estimated the sensitivity and specificity for the presence of isolated worsening of dyspnea at presentation, without other cardinal symptoms of acute exacerbation of COPD. Results: A total of 168 patients were included, of which 22% had confirmed PE. The AUC was 0.66 (95% CI 0.56-0.76) and 0.56 (95% CI 0.45-0.67) for the Wells and Geneva, respectively. Considering the most widely used cutoff points, the sensitivity and specificity were 24% and 90% for the Wells and 59% and 43% for the Geneva score, respectively. Isolated worsening of dyspnea on presentation had a sensitivity of 92% and specificity of 37%. Conclusions: Both Wells and Geneva scores exhibit poor diagnostic accuracy for the diagnosis of PE in patients with COPD. The presence of isolated worsening of dyspnea on presentation could be an easy to identify criteria for the initial triage in this population. Further validation of our findings remains warranted.Fil: Maritano Furcada, Joaquín. Hospital Italiano; ArgentinaFil: Castro, Horacio Matías. Hospital Italiano; ArgentinaFil: de Vito, Eduardo. Abstract Forty-five Pelibuey sheep were experimentally infested with nematodes to evaluate the effect of three free condensed tannin (FCT) levels of Lysiloma acapulcensis on fecal egg counts (FECs), packed cell volumes (PCV), ocular mucosa colors (OMC), average daily gain (ADG), and adult nematode count. Five treatments were used: 12.5, 25.0, and 37.5 mg of FCT kg−1 of body weight (BW); sterile water (control); and ivermectine (0.22 mg kg−1 of BW) as chemical group. The data were processed through repeated measure- ment analysis. Even though the three FCT doses decreased (P < 0.05) the FEC, the highest reduction was obtained with 37.5 mg kg−1 of BW. No differences were observed in PCV and OMC. Higher ADG (P < 0.05) was observed with 37.5 mg kg−1 of BW of FCT. The count of adult nematodes (females and males) in the higher dose of FCT was similar to chemical treatment. Dose of 37.5 mg kg−1 of BW decreased the parasite infection and improved the lamb performance. Therefore, this dose could be used as a nutraceutic product in sheep production. This work was undertaken with funds from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (Project UAEM 1026/2014RIFC). Our aim was to determine the prognostic impact of coronary artery disease (CAD) on heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) mortality and readmissions. From a prospective multicenter registry that included 1831 patients hospitalized due to heart failure, 583 had a left ventricular ejection fraction of <40%. In total, 266 patients (45.6%) had coronary artery disease as main etiology and 137 (23.5%) had idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and they are the focus of this study. Significant differences were found in Charlson index (CAD 4.4 ± 2.8, idiopathic DCM 2.9 ± 2.4, p < 0.001), and in the number of previous hospitalizations (1.1 ± 1, 0.8 ± 1.2, respectively, p = 0.015). One-year mortality was similar in the two groups: idiopathic DCM (hazard ratio [HR] = 1), CAD (HR 1.50; 95% CI 0.83-2.70, p = 0.182). Mortality/readmissions were also comparable: CAD (HR 0.96; 95% CI 0.64-1.41, p = 0.81). Patients with idiopathic DCM had a higher probability of receiving a heart transplant than those with CAD (HR 4.6; 95% CI 1.4-13.4, p = 0.012). The prognosis of HFrEF is similar in patients with CAD etiology and in those with idiopathic DCM. Patients with idiopathic DCM were more prone to receive heart transplant. This research was funded by CIBERCV I and supported by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III. Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Capacity of Phenolic Compounds of Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Seed depending upon the Extraction Process

    Get PDF
The extraction method is critical for the recovery of phenolic compounds. The main goal was to evaluate the effect of an extraction process from mango seed on their phenolic profile, antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities. Phenolic extraction was performed in different steps: maceration, alkaline hydrolysis, acid/alkaline hydrolysis, polar and non-polar fraction of an ethyl acetate separation. The macerated extract showed a higher variety of polyphenols from mango seed:gallic (138.36 µg/g dry weight), coumaric (65.36 µg/g), ferulic (1376.67 µg/g) , chlorogenic (57.75 µg/g) anddicaffeoylquinic (219.29 µg/g) acids, catechin (16.78 µg/g) and rutin (6678.62µg/g). In alkaline hydrolyzed extract most of these compounds were lost, ferulic acid decreased 1356.77 µg/g dw and gallic acid increased 1383.89 µg/g dw. Gallic and chlorogenic acids increased 165 and 969. 45 µg/g dw respectively in acid/alkaline hydrolyzed, 109.57 and 841.38 µg/g dw respectively in non-polar and 277.15 and 77.88 µg/g dw respectively in polar extracts related to the macerated extract. Rutin was found only in acid/hydrolyzed and non-polar extract in lesser amount (87.62 and 78.51 µg/g dw) compared to macerated extract. The content of phenolic compounds was higher for the macerated extract (phenols=484.42 mg GAE/g and flavonoids=86.59 mg QE/g) than for the other steps. Acid/alkaline hydrolysis increased the antioxidant activity (1787.67 μmol TE/g for DPPH and 3692.86 μmol TE/g for TEAC); while the alkaline hydrolysis increased the antimicrobial effectivity (MIC=2.5 mg/mL for bacteria and 0.5 mg/mL for yeast). Results indicate that the acid or alkaline hydrolysis yields a stronger antioxidant and antimicrobial extract

[EN] The Bachelor's degrees of the first round of verifications (2008), have the obligation to review and renew their teaching approaches, since neither the ways of teaching, nor the ways of practicing the profession, nor the technologies are the same in 2021. There is an opportunity to update the contents and the interrelation between them. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can and should be part of this process of teaching innovation. This is the case of the evolution of the Degree in Science and Technology of Building, to the Degree in Technical Architecture and Building, recently approved (March 2021). The objective of the communication is to present the method followed for the integration of the SDGs in the verification process. The way practiced to determine the goals of each SDG to be incorporated is analyzed. The prioritization of the character of transversality in the planned approach, not as a specific subject but integrated, coordinated, and related between the different subjects in which it is progressively integrated into the degree.
