    Optical Spectroscopic Survey of High-latitude WISE-selected Sources

    We report on the results of an optical spectroscopic survey at high Galactic latitude (|b| ≄ 30°) of a sample of WISE-selected targets, grouped by WISE W1 (λ_eff = 3.4 ÎŒm) flux, which we use to characterize the sources WISE detected. We observed 762 targets in 10 disjoint fields centered on ultraluminous infrared galaxy candidates using DEIMOS on Keck II. We find 0.30 ± 0.02 galaxies arcmin–2 with a median redshift of z = 0.33 ± 0.01 for the sample with W1 ≄ 120 ÎŒJy. The foreground stellar densities in our survey range from 0.23 ± 0.07 arcmin–2 to 1.1 ± 0.1 arcmin–2 for the same sample. We obtained spectra that produced science grade redshifts for ≄90% of our targets for sources with W1 flux ≄120 ÎŒJy that also had an i-band flux gsim 18 ÎŒJy. We used this for targeting very preliminary data reductions available to the team in 2010 August. Our results therefore present a conservative estimate of what is possible to achieve using WISE's Preliminary Data Release for the study of field galaxies

    Discovery of Highly Obscured Galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance

    We report the discovery of twenty-five previously unknown galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance. Our systematic search for extended extra-galactic sources in the GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL mid-infrared surveys of the Galactic plane has revealed two overdensities of these sources, located around l ~ 47 and 55 degrees and |b| less than 1 degree in the Sagitta-Aquila region. These overdensities are consistent with the local large-scale structure found at similar Galactic longitude and extending from |b| ~ 4 to 40 degrees. We show that the infrared spectral energy distribution of these sources is indeed consistent with those of normal galaxies. Photometric estimates of their redshift indicate that the majority of these galaxies are found in the redshift range z = 0.01 - 0.05, with one source located at z = 0.07. Comparison with known sources in the local Universe reveals that these galaxies are located at similar overdensities in redshift space. These new galaxies are the first evidence of a bridge linking the large-scale structure between both sides of the Galactic plane at very low Galactic latitude and clearly demonstrate the feasibility of detecting galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance using mid-to-far infrared surveys.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, 28 pages, 5 tables, 11 figure

    Not throwing out the baby with the bathwater: Bell's condition of local causality mathematically 'sharp and clean'

    The starting point of the present paper is Bell's notion of local causality and his own sharpening of it so as to provide for mathematical formalisation. Starting with Norsen's (2007, 2009) analysis of this formalisation, it is subjected to a critique that reveals two crucial aspects that have so far not been properly taken into account. These are (i) the correct understanding of the notions of sufficiency, completeness and redundancy involved; and (ii) the fact that the apparatus settings and measurement outcomes have very different theoretical roles in the candidate theories under study. Both aspects are not adequately incorporated in the standard formalisation, and we will therefore do so. The upshot of our analysis is a more detailed, sharp and clean mathematical expression of the condition of local causality. A preliminary analysis of the repercussions of our proposal shows that it is able to locate exactly where and how the notions of locality and causality are involved in formalising Bell's condition of local causality.Comment: 14 pages.     Paramagnetic Resonance Absorption in Some Organic Biradicals

    Four compounds of the form 4,4â€Č‐polymethylenebistriphenylmethyl, one compound of the form (1,4‐phenylene)bisdiarylmethyl, three compounds of the form (4,4â€Č‐biphenylene)bisdiarylmethyl, and one compound, 4,4â€Č‐oxybistriphenylmethyl have been shown to possess unpaired electrons by paramagnetic resonance absorption. The resonance spectra of 0.01 M solutions of these compounds in benzene exhibit a hyperfine structure arising from a spherically symmetrical contribution of the magnetic dipole interaction between the unpaired electron and the nuclear magnetic moments of the hydrogen atoms. The g‐factors for the compounds investigated in the first three classes were found to be 2.0025±0.0004 and 2.0031±0.0004 for the last compound. Such a close approach of the g‐factor to the free electron value plus the sharpness of the hyperfine structure lines indicates that the anisotropic contributions of the spin‐orbit interaction, which would normally lift the degeneracy of the triplet state, are averaged out by the tumbling of the molecules.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70965/2/JCPSA6-25-4-697-1.pd

    Using elicitation interview within a phenomenographic framework: developing the breadth of research designs associated with game based approaches.

    This paper describes how elicitation interview technique was used within a phenomenographic research design to explore physical education teachers’ experiences of teaching games using a Game Based Approach (GBA). Participants taught in one of two different international contexts, Australia or England, and all had some experience of using a GBA to teach games. The focus of the paper is the presentation and discussion of the unique research design used to generate understanding about GBA teaching experiences as well as extending the examination of GBAs from different philosophical viewpoints. Authors’ reflections on the utilised research design are presented with concluding discussion identifying further research opportunities relating to GBAs in teaching and coaching contexts

    Radio galaxies and their magnetic fields out to z <= 3

    We present polarisation properties at 1.4 1.4\,GHz of two separate extragalactic source populations: passive quiescent galaxies and luminous quasar-like galaxies. We use data from the {\it Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer} data to determine the host galaxy population of the polarised extragalactic radio sources. The quiescent galaxies have higher percentage polarisation, smaller radio linear size, and 1.4 1.4\,GHz luminosity of 6×1021<L1.4<7×1025 6\times10^{21}<L_{\rm 1.4}<7\times10^{25}\,W Hz−1^{-1}, while the quasar-like galaxies have smaller percentage polarisation, larger radio linear size at radio wavelengths, and a 1.4 1.4\,GHz luminosity of 9×1023<L1.4<7×1028 9\times10^{23}<L_{\rm 1.4}<7\times10^{28}\,W Hz−1^{-1}, suggesting that the environment of the quasar-like galaxies is responsible for the lower percentage polarisation. Our results confirm previous studies that found an inverse correlation between percentage polarisation and total flux density at 1.4 1.4\,GHz. We suggest that the population change between the polarised extragalactic radio sources is the origin of this inverse correlation and suggest a cosmic evolution of the space density of quiescent galaxies. Finally, we find that the extragalactic contributions to the rotation measures (RMs) of the nearby passive galaxies and the distant quasar-like galaxies are different. After accounting for the RM contributions by cosmological large-scale structure and intervening Mg\,{II} absorbers we show that the distribution of intrinsic RMs of the distant quasar-like sources is at most four times as wide as the RM distribution of the nearby quiescent galaxies, if the distribution of intrinsic RMs of the WISE-Star sources itself is at least several rad m−2^{-2} wide.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication into MNRA
