    The structure of everyday narrative in a city market: An ethnopoetics approach

    This paper considers the value of Hymesian ethnopoetics as a means of analysing everyday narrative in conditions of mobility and change. The paper offers an account of the development of ethnopoetics as a means to make visible and valorize narrative in the Native American oral tradition, and as a method of revealing culturally specific relations of form and meaning. Hymes' ethnopoetic approach viewed narrative structure as a reflection of a cultural tradition of meaning‐making. Hymes' analysis proposed that traditional narrative was a culturally shaped way of speaking, and analysis of narrative structure could reveal and recreate culture. His orientation rested on an assumption that the culture of a group was more or less stable and fixed. This paper adopts an approach to analysis based on ethnopoetics, representing everyday narrative dramatically, organized not only as lines and verses, but also as scenes and acts. Representation in scenes and acts makes visible the dynamic nature of the narrative. The paper asks whether Hymes' ground‐breaking work on ethnopoetics still has currency and purchase in 21st‐century conditions of mobility, change, and unpredictability. Analysis of everyday narrative in a city market concludes that, notwithstanding the complexity of notions of 'culture' and 'language' in such conditions, ethnopoetics can be productively applied to everyday contexts for the analysis of narrative

    Marginal Microleakage Evaluation of Four Temporary Restorative Materials Used as Double Seal in Endodontics: An In Vitro Study

    Placing a double-seal in endodontics using temporary restorative cements is a common practice however the sealing capabilities against marginal leakage of these materials have not been revealed. The study was conducted to determine which combination of cements is going to be more effective in providing provisional barrier in between endodontic appointments. A quantitative comparative research design was employed in this study. Four cements were selected to be used as double seal in 60 endodontically prepared teeth. The 60 specimens were grouped into five: 10 specimens on the first four groups and 20 specimens on the fifth group. Group A was filled with Caviton and IRM©; Group B, with Cavit and IRM©; Group C, with Caviton and Hy-bond Zinc Phosphate Cement; Group D, with Cavit and Hy-Bond Zinc Phosphate Cement; and Group E, with the combination of groups A, B, C, and D. All specimens were mounted in Portland cement up to their cervical lines, exposing their crowns. All specimens underwent thermocycling for 100 cycles by placing them alternately in distilled water baths at a temperature range of 5oC and 55oC, 30 seconds in each bath. After thermocycling, the specimens were immersed in methylene blue dye solution for leakage assessment. Groups A, B, C, and D were immersed for 30 minutes, while Group E was immersed for 1 hour. The teeth were then rinsed under tap water and dried and then sectioned mesiodistally. The greatest depth of dye penetration was measured using a periodontal probe and was recorded

    Parameterized Complexity of Streaming Diameter and Connectivity Problems

    We initiate the investigation of the parameterized complexity of Diameter and Connectivity in the streaming paradigm. On the positive end, we show that knowing a vertex cover of size k allows for algorithms in the Adjacency List (AL) streaming model whose number of passes is constant and memory is O(log n) for any fixed k. Underlying these algorithms is a method to execute a breadth-first search in O(k) passes and O(klog n) bits of memory. On the negative end, we show that many other parameters lead to lower bounds in the AL model, where Ω(n/p) bits of memory is needed for any p-pass algorithm even for constant parameter values. In particular, this holds for graphs with a known modulator (deletion set) of constant size to a graph that has no induced subgraph isomorphic to a fixed graph H, for most H. For some cases, we can also show one-pass, Ω(nlog n) bits of memory lower bounds. We also prove a much stronger Ω(n2/p) lower bound for Diameter on bipartite graphs. Finally, using the insights we developed into streaming parameterized graph exploration algorithms, we show a new streaming kernelization algorithm for computing a vertex cover of size k. This yields a kernel of 2k vertices (with O(k2) edges) produced as a stream in poly(k) passes and only O(klog n) bits of memory

    Stillbirths: recall to action in high-income countries.

    Variation in stillbirth rates across high-income countries and large equity gaps within high-income countries persist. If all high-income countries achieved stillbirth rates equal to the best performing countries, 19,439 late gestation (28 weeks or more) stillbirths could have been avoided in 2015. The proportion of unexplained stillbirths is high and can be addressed through improvements in data collection, investigation, and classification, and with a better understanding of causal pathways. Substandard care contributes to 20-30% of all stillbirths and the contribution is even higher for late gestation intrapartum stillbirths. National perinatal mortality audit programmes need to be implemented in all high-income countries. The need to reduce stigma and fatalism related to stillbirth and to improve bereavement care are also clear, persisting priorities for action. In high-income countries, a woman living under adverse socioeconomic circumstances has twice the risk of having a stillborn child when compared to her more advantaged counterparts.     Recommendations and guidelines from the ISMRM Diffusion Study Group for preclinical diffusion MRI: Part 1 -- In vivo small-animal imaging

    The value of in vivo preclinical diffusion MRI (dMRI) is substantial. Small-animal dMRI has been used for methodological development and validation, characterizing the biological basis of diffusion phenomena, and comparative anatomy. Many of the influential works in this field were first performed in small animals or ex vivo samples. The steps from animal setup and monitoring, to acquisition, analysis, and interpretation are complex, with many decisions that may ultimately affect what questions can be answered using the data. This work aims to serve as a reference, presenting selected recommendations and guidelines from the diffusion community, on best practices for preclinical dMRI of in vivo animals. In each section, we also highlight areas for which no guidelines exist (and why), and where future work should focus. We first describe the value that small animal imaging adds to the field of dMRI, followed by general considerations and foundational knowledge that must be considered when designing experiments. We briefly describe differences in animal species and disease models and discuss how they are appropriate for different studies. We then give guidelines for in vivo acquisition protocols, including decisions on hardware, animal preparation, imaging sequences and data processing, including pre-processing, model-fitting, and tractography. Finally, we provide an online resource which lists publicly available preclinical dMRI datasets and software packages, to promote responsible and reproducible research. An overarching goal herein is to enhance the rigor and reproducibility of small animal dMRI acquisitions and analyses, and thereby advance biomedical knowledge.Comment: 69 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

    ZMYND10 Is Mutated in Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia and Interacts with LRRC6

    Defects of motile cilia cause primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), characterized by recurrent respiratory infections and male infertility. Using whole-exome resequencing and high-throughput mutation analysis, we identified recessive biallelic mutations in ZMYND10 in 14 families and mutations in the recently identified LRRC6 in 13 families. We show that ZMYND10 and LRRC6 interact and that certain ZMYND10 and LRRC6 mutations abrogate the interaction between the LRRC6 CS domain and the ZMYND10 C-terminal domain. Additionally, ZMYND10 and LRRC6 colocalize with the centriole markers SAS6 and PCM1. Mutations in ZMYND10 result in the absence of the axonemal protein components DNAH5 and DNALI1 from respiratory cilia. Animal models support the association between ZMYND10 and human PCD, given that zmynd10 knockdown in zebrafish caused ciliary paralysis leading to cystic kidneys and otolith defects and that knockdown in Xenopus interfered with ciliogenesis. Our findings suggest that a cytoplasmic protein complex containing ZMYND10 and LRRC6 is necessary for motile ciliary function

    Dialect, interaction and class positioning at school: from deficit to difference to repertoire.

    Sociolinguists have been fighting dialect prejudice since the 1960s, but deficit views of non-standard English are regaining currency in educational discourse. In this paper I argue that the traditional sociolinguistic response – stressing dialect systematicity and tolerance of ‘difference’ – may no longer be effective by questioning a key assumption that both deficit and difference approaches share, namely that there exist discrete varieties of English. Based on an empirical study of the language of working-class children in north-east England, I demonstrate that non-standard dialects of English do not have a discrete system of grammar that is isolated from other varieties; rather local dialect forms interact with a range of semiotic resources (including standard forms) within speakers’ repertoires. Interactional analyses of the children’s spontaneous speech highlight this hybridity, as well as the social meanings behind the linguistic choices children make. I conclude by addressing educational responses to non-standard dialect in the classroom, suggesting that it is not the presence or absence of non-standard forms in children’s speech that raises educational issues; rather, educational responses which problematise non-standard voices risk marginalising working-class speech, and may contribute to the alienation of working-class children, or significant groups of them, within the school system

    Kernelization using structural parameters on sparse graph classes

    We prove that graph problems with finite integer index have linear kernels on graphs of bounded expansion when parameterized by the size of a modulator to constant-treedepth graphs. For nowhere dense graph classes, our result yields almost-linear kernels. We also argue that such a linear kernelization result with a weaker parameter would fail to include some of the problems covered by our framework. We only require the problems to have FII on graphs of constant treedepth. This allows to prove linear kernels also for problems such as Longest-Path/Cycle, Exact- s, t -Path, Treewidth, and Pathwidth, which do not have FII on general graphs
