The rise of the quasi-public space and its consequences for cities and culture
This article argues that whilst appearing new, quasi-public spaces have emerged from a process of investment restructuring over the last 50 years. The profound change that is set in motion is a loss of control of public space and its cultural uses in cities. The tensions set up in this transformation are illustrated by the cultural fortunes of the largest such space in London, Granary Square; and, that of the City of London that has little, if any, public space

A systematic review on mobilization splinting for the post traumatic stiff hand
Hand stiffness or contracture remains a common complication after a traumatic hand injury and/or surgery. The loss of range of motion (ROM) impacts on the use of the affected hand in activities of daily living (ADLs), which in turn affects one’s independence level. Traditionally, hand therapists have been using different types of mobilization splint to resolve post-traumatic hand stiffness. However, there is no clear evidence governing the splinting strategies. Hence, a systematic review was carried out to establish if mobilization splinting is an effective treatment, to explore the different types of mobilization splint believed to be the most effective, and to identify factors that can influence splinting outcomes. A systematic literature search was undertaken using AMED (1985 to May 2013), MEDLINE (1950 to May 2013), Pubmed Central (1948 to May 2013), CINAHL (1981 to May 2013), and Scopus (1996 to May 2013). Five key hand therapy and hand surgery journals were searched plus a search of conference proceedings and other grey literature. Studies of any design type were included, except for literature reviews and expert opinions. Non-English publications were excluded. Data were extracted using tool that had been developed based on Cochrane Collaboration’s guidelines. The methodological quality of the selected studies was assessed using the Structured Effectiveness Quality Evaluation Scale (SEQES) (MacDermid, 2004) and the level of evidence for each study was allocated. Six trials—4 Level 2b and 2 Level 4, were included. These involved a total of 117 participants, with 134 stiff hand joints. Overall, the available evidence provided low to moderate support for the use of mobilization splint for increasing ROM of the post-traumatic stiff hand. The evidence, however, could not address if there was any functional improvement post-mobilization splinting. Additionally, there was also little to no convincing evidence to make any conclusions about the most effective type of mobilization splint and the factors that can influence splinting outcome. Further higher quality research will be needed so as to provide more high quality evidence to establish evidence-based guidelines in this area

of soluble proteins, and more exotic questions such as effects of surface
chemistry in treating stability of macromolecular structures in aqueous

Importance of Spin-Orbit Interaction for the Electron Spin Relaxation in Organic Semiconductors
Despite the great interest organic spintronics has recently attracted, there is only a partial understanding of the fundamental physics behind electron spin relaxation in organic semiconductors. Mechanisms based on hyperfine interaction have been demonstrated, but the role of the spin-orbit interaction remains elusive. Here, we report muon spin spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on two series of molecular semiconductors in which the strength of the spin-orbit interaction has been systematically modified with a targeted chemical substitution of different atoms at a particular molecular site. We find that the spin-orbit interaction is a significant source of electron spin relaxation in these materials
Media coverage and public understanding of sentencing policy in relation to crimes against children
This research examines how the media report on sentences given to those who commit serious crimes against children and how this impacts on public knowledge and attitudes. Three months of press and television coverage were analysed in order to establish the editorial lines that are taken in different sections of the media and how they are promoted by selective reporting of sentencing. Results indicate that a small number of very high profile crimes account for a significant proportion of reporting in this area and often, particularly in the tabloid press, important information regarding sentencing rationale is sidelined in favour of moral condemnation and criticism of the judiciary. Polling data indicate that public attitudes are highly critical of sentencing but also confused about the meaning of tariffs. The article concludes by discussing what can be done to promote a more informed public debate over penal policy in this area
Measuring portfolio performance using a modified measure of risk
This paper reports the results of an investigation into the properties of a theoretical modification of beta proposed by Leland (1999) and based on earlier work of Rubinstein (1976). It is shown that when returns are elliptically symmetric, beta is the appropriate measure of risk and that there are other situations in which the modified beta will be similar to the traditional measure based on the capital asset pricing model. For the case where returns have a normal distribution, it is shown that the criterion either does not exist or reduces exactly to the conventional beta. It is therefore conjectured that the modified measure will only be useful for portfolios that have nonstandard return distributions which incorporate skewness. For such situations, it is shown how to estimate the measure using regression and how to compare the resulting statistic with a traditional estimated beta using Hotelling's test. An empirical study based on stocks from the FTSE350 does not find evidence to support the use of the new measure even in the presence of skewness.Journal of Asset Management (2007) 7, 388-403. doi:10.1057/palgrave.jam.225005

Evaluating Retinal Function in Age-Related Maculopathy with the ERG Photostress Test
PURPOSE. To evaluate the diagnostic potential of the electroretinogram (ERG) photostress test and the focal cone ERG in age-related maculopathy (ARM).
METHODS. The cohort comprised 31 patients with ARM and 27 age-matched control subjects. The ERG photostress test was used to monitor cone adaptation after intense light adaptation. Focal 41- and 5-Hz cone ERGs were recorded monocularly (central 20°) to assess steady state retinal function. Univariate analysis identified electrophysiological parameters that differed between groups, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to assess their diagnostic potential. Logistic regression analysis determined the diagnostic potential of a model incorporating several independent predictors of ARM.
RESULTS. The rate of recovery of the ERG photostress test was reduced (recovery was slower) in subjects with ARM. The parameter exhibited good diagnostic potential (P = 0.002, area under ROC curve = 0.74). The implicit times of the 5-Hz (a-wave, P = 0.002; b-wave, P < 0.001) and the 41-Hz (P < 0.001) focal cone ERGs were increased, and the 41-Hz focal cone ERG amplitude (P = 0.003) and focal to full-field amplitude ratio (P = 0.001) were reduced in the ARM group. Logistic regression analysis identified three independent predictors of ARM, including the rate of recovery of the ERG photostress test.
CONCLUSIONS. Early ARM has a marked effect on the kinetics of cone adaptation. The clinical application of the ERG photostress test increases the sensitivity and specificity of a model for the diagnosis of ARM. Improved assessment of the functional integrity of the central retina will facilitate early diagnosis and evaluation of therapeutic interventions
What are we measuring? A critique of range of motion methods currently in use for Dupuytren's disease and recommendations for practice
Background: Range of motion is the most frequently reported measure used in practice to evaluate outcomes.
A goniometer is the most reliable tool to assess range of motion yet, the lack of consistency in reporting prevents comparison between studies. The aim of this study is to identify how range of motion is currently assessed and reported in Dupuytren’s disease literature. Following analysis recommendations for practice will be made to enable consistency in future studies for comparability. This paper highlights the variation in range of motion reporting in Dupuytren’s disease.
Methods: A Participants, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes and Study design format was used for the search strategy and search terms. Surgery, needle fasciotomy or collagenase injection for primary or recurrent Dupuytren’s disease in adults were included if outcomes were monitored using range of motion to record change. A literature search was performed in May 2013 using subject heading and free-text terms to also capture electronic publications ahead of print. In total 638 publications were identified and following screening 90 articles met the inclusion criteria. Data was extracted and entered onto a spreadsheet for analysis. A thematic analysis was carried out to establish any duplication, resulting in the final range of motion measures identified.
Results: Range of motion measurement lacked clarity, with goniometry reportedly used in only 43 of the 90 studies, 16 stated the use of a range of motion protocol. A total of 24 different descriptors were identified describing range of motion in the 90 studies. While some studies reported active range of motion, others reported passive or were unclear. Eight of the 24 categories were identified through thematic analysis as possibly describing the same measure, ‘lack of joint extension’ and accounted for the most frequently used. Conclusions: Published studies lacked clarity in reporting range of motion, preventing data comparison and
meta-analysis. Percentage change lacks context and without access to raw data, does not allow direct comparison of baseline characteristics. A clear description of what is being measured within each study was required. It is recommended that range of motion measuring and reporting for Dupuytren’s disease requires consistency to address issues that fall into 3 main categories:-
