A fault-tolerant variational quantum algorithm with limited T-depth
We propose a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm that uses a fault-tolerant (FT) gate-set, and is hence suitable for implementation on a future error-corrected quantum computer. VQE quantum circuits are typically designed for near-term, noisy quantum devices and have continuously parameterized rotation gates as the central building block. On the other hand, an FT quantum computer (FTQC) can only implement a discrete set of logical gates, such as the so-called Clifford+T gates. We show that the energy minimization of VQE can be performed with such an FT discrete gate-set, where we use the Ross-Selinger algorithm to transpile the continuous rotation gates to the error-correctable Clifford+T gate-set. We find that there is no loss of convergence when compared to the one of parameterized circuits if an adaptive accuracy of the transpilation is used in the VQE optimization. State preparation with VQE requires only a moderate number of T-gates, depending on the system size and transpilation accuracy. We demonstrate these properties on emulators for two prototypical spin models with up to 16 qubits. This is a promising result for the integration of VQE and more generally variational algorithms in the emerging FT setting, where they can form building blocks of the general quantum algorithms that will become accessible in an FTQC
Structure and Magnetism of well-defined cobalt nanoparticles embedded in a niobium matrix
Our recent studies on Co-clusters embedded in various matrices reveal that
the co-deposition technique (simultaneous deposition of two beams : one for the
pre-formed clusters and one for the matrix atoms) is a powerful tool to prepare
magnetic nanostructures with any couple of materials even though they are
miscible. We study, both sharply related, structure and magnetism of the Co/Nb
system. Because such a heterogeneous system needs to be described at different
scales, we used microscopic and macroscopic techniques but also local selective
absorption ones. We conclude that our clusters are 3 nm diameter f.c.c
truncated octahedrons with a pure cobalt core and a solid solution between Co
and Nb located at the interface which could be responsible for the magnetically
inactive monolayers we found. The use of a very diluted Co/Nb film, further
lithographed, would allow us to achieve a pattern of microsquid devices in view
to study the magnetic dynamics of a single-Co cluster.Comment: 7 TeX pages, 9 Postscript figures, detailed heading adde
The type IIb SN 2008ax: the nature of the progenitor
A source coincident with the position of the type IIb supernova (SN) 2008ax
is identified in pre-explosion Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field
Planetary Camera 2 observations in three optical filters. We identify and
constrain two possible progenitor systems: (i) a single massive star that lost
most of its hydrogen envelope through radiatively driven mass loss processes,
prior to exploding as a helium-rich Wolf-Rayet star with a residual hydrogen
envelope, and (ii) an interacting binary in a low mass cluster producing a
stripped progenitor. Late time, high resolution observations along with
detailed modelling of the SN will be required to reveal the true nature of this
progenitor star.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, resolution of figure 1 reduced, figure 2 revised,

Extensive degeneracy, Coulomb phase and magnetic monopoles in an artificial realization of the square ice model
Artificial spin ice systems have been introduced as a possible mean to
investigate frustration effects in a well-controlled manner by fabricating
lithographically-patterned two-dimensional arrangements of interacting magnetic
nanostructures. This approach offers the opportunity to visualize
unconventional states of matter, directly in real space, and triggered a wealth
of studies at the frontier between nanomagnetism, statistical thermodynamics
and condensed matter physics. Despite the strong efforts made these last ten
years to provide an artificial realization of the celebrated square ice model,
no simple geometry based on arrays of nanomagnets succeeded to capture the
macroscopically degenerate ground state manifold of the corresponding model.
Instead, in all works reported so far, square lattices of nanomagnets are
characterized by a magnetically ordered ground state consisting of local
flux-closure configurations with alternating chirality. Here, we show
experimentally and theoretically, that all the characteristics of the square
ice model can be observed if the artificial square lattice is properly
designed. The spin configurations we image after demagnetizing our arrays
reveal unambiguous signatures of an algebraic spin liquid state characterized
by the presence of pinch points in the associated magnetic structure factor.
Local excitations, i.e. classical analogues of magnetic monopoles, are found to
be free to evolve in a massively degenerated, divergence-free vacuum. We thus
provide the first lab-on-chip platform allowing the investigation of collective
phenomena, including Coulomb phases and ice-like physics.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figure
The maximum angle condition is not necessary for convergence of the finite element method
We show that the famous maximum angle condition in the finite element analysis is not necessary to achieve the optimal convergence rate when simplicial finite elements are used to solve elliptic problems. This condition is only sufficient. In fact, finite element approximations may converge even though some dihedral angles of simplicial elements tend to Ï
The ham-5, rcm-1 and rco-1 genes regulate hyphal fusion in Neurospora crassa
Mutants of Neurospora crassa unable to participate in vegetative hyphal fusion (anastomosis) were isolated and characterized. From this analysis, three genes, rcm-1, rco-1 and ham-5, were identified and shown to be required for hyphal fusion. The rcm-1 and rco-1 genes are homologues of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae SSN6 and TUP1 genes, which encode a dimeric transcription factor in yeast. We demonstrate that in N. crassa the rcm-1 and rco-1 genes are required for hyphal fusion and normal hyphal morphology, and influence both asexual and sexual development. The ham-5 gene encodes a 1686 amino acid protein with two putative WD40 domains, which might participate in proteinâprotein interactions. ham-5 deletion mutants had a reduced rate of hyphal extension and altered hyphal morphology, and were unable to produce the conidial anastomosis tubes that are required for hyphal fusion during colony initiation
Socio-Emotional Competencies and School Performance in Adolescence: What Role for School Adjustment?
There is growing evidence in the literature of positive relationships between socio-emotional competencies and school performance. Several hypotheses have been used to explain how these variables may be related to school performance. In this paper, we explored the role of various school adjustment variables in the relationship between interpersonal socio-emotional competencies and school grades, using a weighted network approach. This network approach allowed us to analyze the structure of interrelations between each variable, pointing to both central and mediatory school and socio-emotional variables within the network. Self-reported data from around 3,400 French vocational high school students were examined. This data included a set of interpersonal socio-emotional competencies (cognitive and affective empathy, socio-emotional behaviors and collective orientation), school adjustment measures (adaptation to the institution, school anxiety, self-regulation at school, and self-perceived competence at school) as well as grades in mathematics and French language. The results showed that self-regulation at school weighted the most strongly on the whole network, and was the most important mediatory pathway. More specifically, self-regulation mediated the relationships between interpersonal socio-emotional competencies and school grades

Neel probability and spin correlations in some nonmagnetic and nondegenerate states of hexanuclear antiferromagnetic ring Fe6: Application of algebraic combinatorics to finite Heisenberg spin systems
The spin correlations \omega^z_r, r=1,2,3, and the probability p_N$ of
finding a system in the Neel state for the antiferromagnetic ring Fe(III)6 (the
so-called `small ferric wheel') are calculated. States with magnetization M=0,
total spin 0<=S<=15 and labeled by two (out of four) one-dimensional
irreducible representations (irreps) of the point symmetry group D_6 are taken
into account. This choice follows from importance of these irreps in analyzing
low-lying states in each S-multiplet. Taking into account the Clebsch--Gordan
coefficients for coupling total spins of sublattices (SA=SB=15/2) the global
Neel probability p*_N can be determined. Dependencies of these quantities on
state energy (per bond and in the units of exchange integral J) and the total
spin S are analyzed. Providing we have determined p_N(S) etc. for other
antiferromagnetic rings (Fe10, for instance) we could try to approximate
results for the largest synthesized ferric wheel Fe18. Since thermodynamic
properties of Fe6 have been investigated recently, in the present
considerations they are not discussed, but only used to verify obtained values
of eigenenergies. Numerical results re calculated with high precision using two
main tools: (i) thorough analysis of symmetry properties including methods of
algebraic combinatorics and (ii) multiple precision arithmetic library GMP. The
system considered yields more than 45 thousands basic states (the so-called
Ising configurations), but application of the method proposed reduces this
problem to 20-dimensional eigenproblem for the ground state (S=0). The largest
eigenproblem has to be solved for S=4; its dimension is 60. These two facts
(high precision and small resultant eigenproblems) confirm efficiency and
usefulness of such an approach, so it is briefly discussed here.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figs, 5 tabs, revtex
Clinical activity of a htert (vx-001) cancer vaccine as post-chemotherapy maintenance immunotherapy in patients with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer : final results of a randomised phase 2 clinical trial
The cancer vaccine Vx-001, which targets the universal tumour antigen TElomerase Reverse Transcriptase (TERT), can mount specific Vx-001/TERT CD8 + cytotoxic T cells; this immune response is associated with improved overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced/metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A randomised, double blind, phase 2b trial, in HLA-A*201-positive patients with metastatic, TERT-expressing NSCLC, who did not progress after first-line platinum-based chemotherapy were randomised to receive either Vx-001 or placebo. The primary endpoint of the trial was OS. Results: Two hundred and twenty-one patients were randomised and 190 (101 and 89 patients in the placebo and the Vx-001 arm, respectively) were analysed for efficacy. There was not treatment-related toxicity >grade 2. The study did not meet its primary endpoint (median OS 11.3 and 14.3 months for the placebo and the Vx-001, respectively; p = 0.86) whereas the median Time to Treatment Failure (TTF) was 3.5 and 3.6 months, respectively. Disease control for >6months was observed in 30 (33.7%) and 26 (25.7%) patients treated with Vx-001 and placebo, respectively. There was no documented objective CR or PR. Long lasting TERT-specific immune response was observed in 29.2% of vaccinated patients who experienced a significantly longer OS compared to non-responders (21.3 and 13.4 months, respectively; p = 0.004). Vx-001 could induce specific CD8 immune response but failed to meet its primary endpoint. Subsequent studies have to be focused on the identification and treatment of subgroups of patients able to mount an effective immunological response to Vx-001. Clinical trial registration: NCT0193515
