The use of continuing adult education

    Get PDF
The objectives of the National Space Grant and Fellowship Program include the expansion of space-oriented educational programs beyond the traditional boundaries of university campuses to reach 'non-traditional' students whose personal and professional lives would be enhanced by access to such programs. These objectives coincide with those of the continuing education programs that exist on most university campuses. By utilizing continuing educations resources and facilities, members of the National Space Grant Program can greatly enhance the achievement of program objectives

Do We Prepare Our Students Well for the Job Markets?

Concerns are raised by students and parents whether Agriculture Economics or Agribusiness courses taught at the College of Agriculture help the students to find appropriate jobs after graduation. From the educators' or administrators' point of view, the students' ability to meet job requirements is crucial because it reflects how well they have been prepared for a successful job hunting.Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,

Hepatitis C Diagnoses in an American Indian Primary Care Population

BACKGROUND: Despite large disparities in the burden of chronic liver disease, data on hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among American Indians (AIs) are lacking. We reviewed hepatitis C diagnoses in 35,712 AI/AN primary care patients. MAIN FINDINGS: At least one HCV-associated ICD-9 code was recorded in 251 (1%) patients between October 1, 2001 and September 30, 2003. An HCV enzyme-linked immunoassay (HCVEIA) was sent in 209 (83.0%); 206/209 (99%) were positive. Confirmatory testing was performed in 144/206 (70%) HCV-EIA positive patients; HCV infection was confirmed in 144 (100%). In the 90/144 (63%) charts with risk factor documentation, injection drug use was the most common risk factor (61/90, 68%). Deficiencies were present in hepatitis B and HIV testing, and hepatitis A and B vaccination. PRINCIPAL CONCLUSIONS: Improvements in laboratory workup of HCV and co-infections, risk factor ascertainment and documentation, and adult vaccination are needed to address HCV effectively in this population

A comparison of the results of dynamic wind-tunnel tests with theoretical predictions for an aeromechanical gust-alleviation system for light airplanes

Dynamic wind tunnel tests have been conducted on a 1/6-scale model of a general aviation airplane equipped with an all-mechanical gust alleviation system which uses auxiliary aerodynamic surfaces to drive the flaps. The longitudinal short period motions were studied under simulated gust conditions in order to verify the mathematical model used in a previous study to predict the performance of the full scale system and determine the amount of normal acceleration alleviation which could be attained. The model responses were measured for different configurations with the system active and without the system active for comparison. The tests confirmed the general relationships between the experimental variables and the model responses predicted by the mathematical model, but there were significant differences in the magnitudes of the responses. The experimental results for the model were used to estimate a reduction of 30 percent in the rms normal acceleration response of a similar full scale airplane in atmospheric turbulence

Mechanical and Physical Characteristics of Knee Flexors and Extensors Following Different Warm up Protocols in Collegiate Male Soccer Athletes

PURPOSE: To compare potential differences in mechanical and physical characteristics of knee flexors and extensors in collegiate male soccer players following different warm up protocols. METHODS: Sixteen collegiate male soccer players (20.33 ± 1.33 years, 176.97 ± 6.72 cm, and 78.43 ± 7.42 kg) participated in this study. A small sided games warm up (SSG), a dynamic warm up (DYN), and a plyometric warm up (PLY) were completed using a randomized crossover design. Tensiomyography (TMG) was used to assess contraction time (Tc), delay time (Td) and maximal displacement (Dm) of the rectus femoris (RF) and biceps femoris (BF) of both legs before (PRE) and after (POST) each warm up. POST assessment included: TMG of the RF and BF, countermovement jump height (CMJ-h), CMJ flight time (CMJ-ft), 20m sprint time (20m), T-test time, and sit and reach (SR) distance. All TMG measures were analyzed using a three-way [condition × time x leg] analysis of variance (ANOVA). All performance variable data were analyzed with a repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: There was no difference between warm up protocols for T-test, CMJ-h, or CMJ-ft. 20m significantly improved following SSG (p=0.020) compared to DYN and PLY. SR was significantly greater following PLY (p=0.022). Three-way ANOVA did not reveal a significant interaction for any of the measured TMG variables. However, main effects of time were seen PRE to POST for BF-Tc (p=0.035), RF-Td (p \u3c 0.001) and BF-Td, (p=0.008) and a main effect of condition was seen for RF-Tc (p=0.038). CONCLUSION: Warm-up specific improvements were demonstrated in sprint speed and flexibility measures following SSG and PLY, respectively. While no differences were shown between the examined protocols, the present study revealed PRE to POST changes in certain TMG measures (RF-Td, BF-Td, and BF-Tc) following a warm up in male collegiate soccer athletes

Leadership development and involvement: a study of the 2015 Peer Referral and Orientation Staff at Rowan University

    Get PDF
The purpose of this mixed method study was to (a) assess the Peer Referral Orientation Staff (PROS) program at Rowan University, (b) assess if PROS members identify themselves as leaders on campus, (c) assess if other students identify the PROS members as leaders on campus, and (d) assess PROS member’s beliefs that the program helped them to develop and identify as leaders. A total of 36 subjects took part in the survey portion of the study which helped to assess the above areas. Out of the 36 subjects, four agreed to be participants in the interview process. To give the best perspective of the program, two of the participants chosen were new PROS members, while the remaining two members were returning PROS members. Interviews were transcribed and content analysis was used to analyze the data. The study found that the PROS program does have value as it pertains to developing leadership in students. PROS members articulated how they have personally developed due to their involvement in the PROS program. PROS members reported being able to be more confident in their leadership. They reported very insightful gains in their own development. They also reported increases of awareness in other perceptions of them as leaders and also increases in their own perceptions themselves as leaders
