    Efficient magneto-optical trapping of Yb atoms with a violet laser diode

    We report the first efficient trapping of rare-earth Yb atoms with a high-power violet laser diode (LD). An injection-locked violet LD with a 25 mW frequency-stabilized output was used for the magneto-optical trapping (MOT) of fermionic as well as bosonic Yb isotopes. A typical number of 4×1064\times 10^6 atoms for 174^{174}Yb with a trap density of ∌1×108/\sim 1\times10^8/cm3^3 was obtained. A 10 mW violet external-cavity LD (ECLD) was used for the one-dimensional (1D) slowing of an effusive Yb atomic beam without a Zeeman slower resulting in a 35-fold increase in the number of trapped atoms. The overall characteristics of our compact violet MOT, e.g., the loss time of 1 s, the loading time of 400 ms, and the cloud temperature of 0.7 mK, are comparable to those in previously reported violet Yb MOTs, yet with a greatly reduced cost and complexity of the experiment.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, Phys.     Polarized Substructural Session Types

    Abstract. The deep connection between session-typed concurrency and linear logic is embodied in the language SILL that integrates functional and message-passing concurrent programming. The exacting nature of linear typing provides strong guarantees, such as global progress, absence of deadlock, and race freedom, but it also requires explicit resource man-agement by the programmer. This burden is alleviated in an affine type system where resources need not be used, relying on a simple form of garbage collection. In this paper we show how to effectively support both linear and affine typing in a single language, in addition to the already present unre-stricted (intuitionistic) types. The approach, based on Benton’s adjoint construction, suggests that the usual distinction between synchronous and asynchronous communication can be viewed through the lens of modal logic. We show how polarizing the propositions into positive and negative connectives allows us to elegantly express synchronization in the type instead of encoding it by extra-logical means.

    Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Study on Λ6H hypernucleus by the (π−, K+) reaction at J-PARC

    We carried out an experiment to produce the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6H via the (ÂŒ − , K + ) reaction on 6 Li target at the pion beam momentum of 1.2 GeV/c (J-PARC E10). In order to calibrate the scale of the missing-mass or of thebinding energy of the hypernucleus, we also measured the 12 C(ÂŒ + , K + ) 12 € C, p(ÂŒ − , K + )§ − and p(ÂŒ + , K + )§ + reactions. The experiment was performed at the J-PARC Hadron Hall K1.8 beam line in December 2012 and January 2013. The overall collected data sample corresponds to an integrated beam intensity of 1.65× 10 12 pions

    Genome-wide association study of lung adenocarcinoma in East Asia and comparison with a European population

    Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer. Known risk variants explain only a small fraction of lung adenocarcinoma heritability. Here, we conducted a two-stage genome-wide association study of lung adenocarcinoma of East Asian ancestry (21,658 cases and 150,676 controls; 54.5% never-smokers) and identified 12 novel susceptibility variants, bringing the total number to 28 at 25 independent loci. Transcriptome-wide association analyses together with colocalization studies using a Taiwanese lung expression quantitative trait loci dataset (n = 115) identified novel candidate genes, including FADS1 at 11q12 and ELF5 at 11p13. In a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of East Asian and European studies, four loci were identified at 2p11, 4q32, 16q23, and 18q12. At the same time, most of our findings in East Asian populations showed no evidence of association in European populations. In our studies drawn from East Asian populations, a polygenic risk score based on the 25 loci had a stronger association in never-smokers vs. individuals with a history of smoking (Pinteraction = 0.0058). These findings provide new insights into the etiology of lung adenocarcinoma in individuals from East Asian populations, which could be important in developing translational applications

    Laboratory bioassay and greenhouse evaluation of Trichogramma cordubensis strains from Portugal

    A simple, inexpensive chamber was developed and tested as an evaluative tool to monitor Trichogramma cordubensis dispersal in the laboratory. The chamber consisted of a continuous, winding channel which was cut into an aluminum block. Wasps were released at one end of the channel and allowed to walk in the channel for 21 h and to parasitize Mamestra brassicae eggs placed 3.4 m from the point of wasp introduction. Comparisons between two T. cordubensis populations demonstrated that one population (TCM) dispersed more in the chamber and located host eggs more successfully than the other population (TCD). Subsequent greenhouse releases confirmed that the TCM population dispersed more readily and had significantly higher parasitism rates on sentinel Ephestia kuehniella eggs on tomato plants. The potential utilization of this chamber as a tool to evaluate quality of Trichogramma populations, mainly dispersal activity, is discussed
