    Solid state synthesis of BiFeO3 occurs through the intermediate Bi25FeO39 compound

    The solid-state synthesis of perovskite BiFeO3 has been a topic of interest for decades. Many studies have reported challenges in the synthesis of BiFeO3 from starting oxides of Bi2O3 and Fe2O3, mainly associated with the development of persistent secondary phases such as Bi25FeO39 (sillenite) and Bi2Fe4O9 (mullite). These secondary phases are thought to be a consequence of unreacted Fe-rich and Bi-rich regions, that is, incomplete interdiffusion. In the present work, in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction is used to demonstrate that Bi2O3 first reacts with Fe2O3 to form sillenite Bi25FeO39, which then reacts with the remaining Fe2O3 to form BiFeO3. Therefore, the synthesis of perovskite BiFeO3 is shown to occur via a two-step reaction sequence with Bi25FeO39 as an intermediate compound. Because Bi25FeO39 and the γ-Bi2O3 phase are isostructural, it is difficult to discriminate them solely from X-ray diffraction. Evidence is presented for the existence of the intermediate sillenite Bi25FeO39 using quenching experiments, comparisons between Bi2O3 behavior by itself and in the presence of Fe2O3, and crystal structure examination. With this new information, a proposed reaction pathway from the starting oxides to the product is presented

    Non-colliding Brownian Motions and the extended tacnode process

    We consider non-colliding Brownian motions with two starting points and two endpoints. The points are chosen so that the two groups of Brownian motions just touch each other, a situation that is referred to as a tacnode. The extended kernel for the determinantal point process at the tacnode point is computed using new methods and given in a different form from that obtained for a single time in previous work by Delvaux, Kuijlaars and Zhang. The form of the extended kernel is also different from that obtained for the extended tacnode kernel in another model by Adler, Ferrari and van Moerbeke. We also obtain the correlation kernel for a finite number of non-colliding Brownian motions starting at two points and ending at arbitrary points.Comment: 38 pages.     Subcritical multiplicative chaos for regularized counting statistics from random matrix theory

    For an N×N random unitary matrix U_N, we consider the random field defined by counting the number of eigenvalues of U_N in a mesoscopic arc of the unit circle, regularized at an N-dependent scale Ɛ_N>0. We prove that the renormalized exponential of this field converges as N → ∞ to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure in the whole subcritical phase. In addition, we show that the moments of the total mass converge to a Selberg-like integral and by taking a further limit as the size of the arc diverges, we establish part of the conjectures in [55]. By an analogous construction, we prove that the multiplicative chaos measure coming from the sine process has the same distribution, which strongly suggests that this limiting object should be universal. The proofs are based on the asymptotic analysis of certain Toeplitz or Fredholm determinants using the Borodin-Okounkov formula or a Riemann-Hilbert problem for integrable operators. Our approach to the L¹-phase is based on a generalization of the construction in Berestycki [5] to random fields which are only asymptotically Gaussian. In particular, our method could have applications to other random fields coming from either random matrix theory or a different context

    Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons

    We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+, \bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1}) = 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let

    Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar collisions at sqrt s = 1.96 TeV in the All Hadronic Decay Mode

    We report a measurement of the ttbar production cross section using the CDF-II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The analysis is performed using 311 pb-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The data consist of events selected with six or more hadronic jets with additional kinematic requirements. At least one of these jets must be identified as a b-quark jet by the reconstruction of a secondary vertex. The cross section is measured to be sigma(tbart)=7.5+-2.1(stat.)+3.3-2.2(syst.)+0.5-0.4(lumi.) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction.Comment: By CDF collaboratio

    Search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

    We present a search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons (H+/-+/-), with signatures of high ionization energy loss and muonlike penetration. We use 292 pb(-1) of data collected in p (p) over bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Observing no evidence of long-lived doubly charged particle production, we exclude H-L(+/-+/-) and H-R(+/-+/-) bosons with masses below 133 GeV/c(2) and 109 GeV/c(2), respectively. In the degenerate case we exclude H+/-+/- mass below 146 GeV/c(2). All limits are quoted at the 95% confidence level
