Optical properties of mesoporous 4H-SiC prepared by anodic electrochemical etching
Porous silicon carbide was fabricated from n-type 4H-SiC substrates via anodic electrochemical etching in HF/ethanol solution and suspended in ethanol after ultrasonication. We observed three photoluminescence bands: two at wavelengths of 303ânm and 345ânm were above the bulk bandgap and one at 455ânm was below the bulk bandgap. These blue-shifted and red-shifted emission processes reveal the interplay between quantum confinement, surface states, and band edge related optical transitions. We propose a model to explain the frequently observed deviation from the quantum confinement in the photoluminesence trends for SiC-derived nanoparticles suspended in solvents. The quantum confined properties of the SiC structures provide a route for optical tunability in the UV-blue spectrum for use in novel photonic and biomedical applications
Coupled non-equilibrium growth equations: Self-consistent mode coupling using vertex renormalization
We find that studying the simplest of the coupled non-equilibrium growth
equations of Barabasi by self-consistent mode coupling requires the use of
dressed vertices. Using the vertex renormalization, we find a roughness
exponent which already in the leading order is quite close to the numerical
value.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Interface roughening with nonlinear surface tension
Using stability arguments, this Brief Report suggests that a term that
enhances the surface tension in the presence of large height fluctuations
should be included in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. A one-loop
renormalization group analysis then shows for interface dimensions larger than
an unstable strong-coupling fixed point that enters the system
from infinity. The relevance of these results to the roughening transition is
discussed.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 1 figur
Phase transitions and noise crosscorrelations in a model of directed polymers in a disordered medium
We show that effective interactions mediated by disorder between two directed
polymers can be modelled as the crosscorrelation of noises in the
Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equations satisfied by the respective free energies
of these polymers. When there are two polymers, disorder introduces attractive
interactions between them. We analyze the phase diagram in details and show
that these interactions lead to new phases in the phase diagram. We show that,
even in dimension , the two directed polymers see the attraction only if
the strength of the disorder potential exceeds a threshold value. We extend our
calculations to show that if there are polymers in the system then -body
interactions are generated in the disorder averaged effective free energy.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. E(2000
Anomalous roughening of wood fractured surfaces
Scaling properties of wood fractured surfaces are obtained from samples of
three different sizes. Two different woods are studied: Norway spruce and
Maritime pine. Fracture surfaces are shown to display an anomalous dynamic
scaling of the crack roughness. This anomalous scaling behavior involves the
existence of two different and independent roughness exponents. We determine
the local roughness exponents to be 0.87 for spruce and 0.88
for pine. These results are consistent with the conjecture of a universal local
roughness exponent. The global roughness exponent is different for both woods,
= 1.60 for spruce and = 1.35 for pine. We argue that the global
roughness exponent is a good index for material characterization.Comment: 7 two columns pages plus 8 ps figures, uses psfig. To appear in

A two-species model of a two-dimensional sandpile surface: a case of asymptotic roughening
We present and analyze a model of an evolving sandpile surface in (2 + 1)
dimensions where the dynamics of mobile grains ({\rho}(x, t)) and immobile
clusters (h(x, t)) are coupled. Our coupling models the situation where the
sandpile is flat on average, so that there is no bias due to gravity. We find
anomalous scaling: the expected logarithmic smoothing at short length and time
scales gives way to roughening in the asymptotic limit, where novel and
non-trivial exponents are found.Comment: 7 Pages, 6 Figures; Granular Matter, 2012 (Online
Random walks and polymers in the presence of quenched disorder
After a general introduction to the field, we describe some recent results
concerning disorder effects on both `random walk models', where the random walk
is a dynamical process generated by local transition rules, and on `polymer
models', where each random walk trajectory representing the configuration of a
polymer chain is associated to a global Boltzmann weight. For random walk
models, we explain, on the specific examples of the Sinai model and of the trap
model, how disorder induces anomalous diffusion, aging behaviours and Golosov
localization, and how these properties can be understood via a strong disorder
renormalization approach. For polymer models, we discuss the critical
properties of various delocalization transitions involving random polymers. We
first summarize some recent progresses in the general theory of random critical
points : thermodynamic observables are not self-averaging at criticality
whenever disorder is relevant, and this lack of self-averaging is directly
related to the probability distribution of pseudo-critical temperatures
over the ensemble of samples of size . We describe the
results of this analysis for the bidimensional wetting and for the
Poland-Scheraga model of DNA denaturation.Comment: 17 pages, Conference Proceedings "Mathematics and Physics", I.H.E.S.,

Geometric origin of mechanical properties of granular materials
Some remarkable generic properties, related to isostaticity and potential
energy minimization, of equilibrium configurations of assemblies of rigid,
frictionless grains are studied. Isostaticity -the uniqueness of the forces,
once the list of contacts is known- is established in a quite general context,
and the important distinction between isostatic problems under given external
loads and isostatic (rigid) structures is presented. Complete rigidity is only
guaranteed, on stability grounds, in the case of spherical cohesionless grains.
Otherwise, the network of contacts might deform elastically in response to load
increments, even though grains are rigid. This sets an uuper bound on the
contact coordination number. The approximation of small displacements (ASD)
allows to draw analogies with other model systems studied in statistical
mechanics, such as minimum paths on a lattice. It also entails the uniqueness
of the equilibrium state (the list of contacts itself is geometrically
determined) for cohesionless grains, and thus the absence of plastic
dissipation. Plasticity and hysteresis are due to the lack of such uniqueness
and may stem, apart from intergranular friction, from small, but finite,
rearrangements, in which the system jumps between two distinct potential energy
minima, or from bounded tensile contact forces. The response to load increments
is discussed. On the basis of past numerical studies, we argue that, if the ASD
is valid, the macroscopic displacement field is the solution to an elliptic
boundary value problem (akin to the Stokes problem).Comment: RevTex, 40 pages, 26 figures. Close to published paper. Misprints and

Anisotropy studies around the galactic centre at EeV energies with the Auger Observatory
Data from the Pierre Auger Observatory are analyzed to search for
anisotropies near the direction of the Galactic Centre at EeV energies. The
exposure of the surface array in this part of the sky is already significantly
larger than that of the fore-runner experiments. Our results do not support
previous findings of localized excesses in the AGASA and SUGAR data. We set an
upper bound on a point-like flux of cosmic rays arriving from the Galactic
Centre which excludes several scenarios predicting sources of EeV neutrons from
Sagittarius . Also the events detected simultaneously by the surface and
fluorescence detectors (the `hybrid' data set), which have better pointing
accuracy but are less numerous than those of the surface array alone, do not
show any significant localized excess from this direction.Comment: Matches published versio
