    An XML Representation of DAE Systems Obtained from Modelica Models

    This contribution presents an XML format for representation of flat Modelica models. The purpose is to offer a standardized model exchange format which is based on the DAE formalism and wich is neutral with respect to model usage. Many usages of models goes beyond what can be obtained from an execution interface offering evaluation of the model equations. Several such usages arises in the area of control engineering, where LFT transformations, derivation of robotic controllers, optimization, and real time code generation are some examples. The choice of XML is motivated by its defacto standard status and the availability of free and efficient tools. Also, the XSLT language enables specification of transformation of the XML model representation into other formats

    Integration of CasADi and JModelica.org

    This paper presents the integration of two open source softwares: CasADi, which is a framework for efficient evaluation of expressions and their derivatives, and the Modelica-based platform JModelica.org. The integration of the tools is based on an XML format for exchange of DAE models. The JModelica.org platform supports export of model in this XML format, whereas CasADi supports import of models expressed in this format. Furthermore, we have carried out comparisons with ACADO, which is a multiple shooting package for solving optimal control problems. CasADi, in turn, has been interfaced with ACADO Toolkit, enabling users to define optimal control problems using Modelica and Optimica specifications, and use solve using direct multiple shooting. In addition, a collocation algorithm targeted at solving large- scale DAE constrained dynamic optimization problems has been implemented. This implementation explores CasADi’s Python and IPOPT interfaces, which offers a convenient, yet highly efficient environment for development of optimization algorithms.     Examining biofilm growth and metabolism of Escherichia coli at laboratory scale using geoelectrical methods

    To link geophysical field data to specific biological phenomena, controlled laboratory experiments are needed for the understanding of the response of geophysical parameters to changes in biological conditions. In this study, suspensions of bacteria were mixed with sand to create a biofilm growing on a surface and these mixtures were monitored using the geoelectrical spectral induced polarization method (SIP). The beginning growth of the biofilm was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and the amount of bacteria in liquid and sand estimated using culture and DNA based methods (i.e. qPCR, quantitative polymerase chain reaction). While changes in SIP signal could not be clearly related to microbial activity, fluctuations in the phase shift were concomitant with the detection of two unidentified metabolites in the liquid extracted from the sand. These metabolites were only detected when the biofilm was produced under oxygen limiting conditions. Even though the experimental design was not optimal for the SIP measurements, the results support the idea that these measurements are not measuring cell mass but are influenced by the presence of smaller charged molecules that may be produced as microbial metabolites. As microbial metabolites would change in the field during bioremediation, this method could be applied for this type of monitoring

    Habitat selection and foraging site fidelity in Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia) breeding in the Baltic Sea

    Habitat preferences and foraging strategies affect population-level space use and are therefore crucial to understanding population change and implementing spatial conservation and management actions. We investigated the breeding season habitat preference and foraging site fidelity of the under-studied and threatened, Baltic Sea population of Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia). Using GPS devices, we tracked 20 adult individuals at two breeding colonies, in Sweden and Finland, from late incubation through chick-rearing. Analyzing foraging movements during this period, we describe trip characteristics for each colony, daily metrics of effort, habitat use, and foraging site fidelity. We found that daily time spent away from the colony increased throughout the season, with colony-level differences in terms of distance travelled per day. In general, terns selected shallow waters between 0-5 meters in depth with certain individuals using inland lakes for foraging. We show, for the first time, that individual Caspian Terns are faithful to foraging sites throughout the breeding season, and that individuals are highly repeatable in their strategies regarding foraging site fidelity. These results fill important knowledge gaps for this at-risk population, and extend our general knowledge of the breeding season foraging ecology of this widespread species.Peer reviewe

    Subtrochanteric fractures after long-term treatment with bisphosphonates: a European Society on Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis, and International Osteoporosis Foundation Working Group Report

    Summary: This paper reviews the evidence for an association between atypical subtrochanteric fractures and long-term bisphosphonate use. Clinical case reports/reviews and case-control studies report this association, but retrospective phase III trial analyses show no increased risk. Bisphosphonate use may be associated with atypical subtrochanteric fractures, but the case is yet unproven. Introduction: A Working Group of the European Society on Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis and the International Osteoporosis Foundation has reviewed the evidence for a causal association between subtrochanteric fractures and long-term treatment with bisphosphonates, with the aim of identifying areas for further research and providing recommendations for physicians. Methods: A PubMed search of literature from 1994 to May 2010 was performed using key search terms, and articles pertinent to subtrochanteric fractures following bisphosphonate use were analysed. Results: Several clinical case reports and case reviews report a possible association between atypical fractures at the subtrochanteric region of the femur in bisphosphonate-treated patients. Common features of these ‘atypical' fractures include prodromal pain, occurrence with minimal/no trauma, a thickened diaphyseal cortex and transverse fracture pattern. Some small case-control studies report the same association, but a large register-based study and retrospective analyses of phase III trials of bisphosphonates do not show an increased risk of subtrochanteric fractures with bisphosphonate use. The number of atypical subtrochanteric fractures in association with bisphosphonates is an estimated one per 1,000 per year. It is recommended that physicians remain vigilant in assessing their patients treated with bisphosphonates for the treatment or prevention of osteoporosis and advise patients of the potential risks. Conclusions: Bisphosphonate use may be associated with atypical subtrochanteric fractures, but the case is unproven and requires further research.     As a Matter of Factions: The Budgetary Implications of Shifting Factional Control in Japan’s LDP

    For 38 years, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) maintained single-party control over the Japanese government. This lack of partisan turnover in government has frustrated attempts to explain Japanese government policy changes using political variables. In this paper, we look for intraparty changes that may have led to changes in Japanese budgetary policy. Using a simple model of agenda-setting, we hypothesize that changes in which intraparty factions “control” the LDP affect the party’s decisions over spending priorities systematically. This runs contrary to the received wisdom in the voluminous literature on LDP factions, which asserts that factions, whatever their raison d’ĂȘtre, do not exhibit different policy preferences. We find that strong correlations do exist between which factions comprise the agenda-setting party “mainstream” and how the government allocates spending across pork-barrel and public goods items

    A review on experimental results for direct photon production in heavy ion reactions is given. A brief survey of early direct photon limits from SPS experiments is presented. The first measurement of direct photons in heavy ion reactions from the WA98 collaboration is discussed and compared to theoretical calculations.     Behavior of the diffractive cross section in hadron-nucleus collisions

    A phenomenological analysis of diffractive dissociation of nuclei in proton-nucleus and meson-nucleus collisions is presented. The theoretical approach employed here is able to take into account at once data of the HELIOS and EHS/NA22 collaborations that exhibit quite different atomic mass dependences. Possible extensions of this approach to hard diffraction in nuclear processes are also discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
