    The effect of load in a contact with boundary lubrication

    The effect of the transition load on the wear in a contact with boundary lubrication was investigated. An experimental method was developed for this purpose, and parameters affecting the boundary lubrication under industrial operating conditions were identified. These parameters are the adsorbed boundary film, the contact microgeometry (surface roughness), macrogeometry, and hardness of materials used. It was found that the curve of the tops of the surface protrustion affect the transition load, and thus the boundary lubrication. The transition load also depends on the chemical nature of the contact and its geometrical and mechanical aspects

    Evolution of the Dust Coma in Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko Before 2009 Perihelion

    Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is the main target of ESA's Rosetta mission and will be encountered in May 2014. As the spacecraft shall be in orbit the comet nucleus before and after release of the lander {\it Philae}, it is necessary necessary to know the conditions in the coma. Study the dust environment, including the dust production rate and its variations along its preperihelion orbit. The comet was observed during its approach to the Sun on four epochs between early-June 2008 and mid-January 2009, over a large range of heliocentric distances that will be covered by the mission in 2014. An anomalous enhancement of the coma dust density was measured towards the comet nucleus. The scalelength of this enhancement increased with decreasing heliocentric distance of the comet. This is interpreted as a result of an unusually slow expansion of the dust coma. Assuming a spherical symmetric coma, the average amount of dust as well as its ejection velocity have been derived. The latter increases exponentially with decreasing heliocentric distance (\rh), ranging from about 1 m/s at 3 AU to about 25-35 m/s at 1.4 AU. Based on these results we describe the dust environment at those nucleocentric distances at which the spacecraft will presumably be in orbit.     Polarimetry and photometry of the peculiar main-belt object 7968 = 133P/Elst-Pizarro

    133P/Elst-Pizarro is an object that has been described as either an active asteroid or a cometary object in the main asteroid belt. Here we present a photometric and polarimetric study of this object in an attempt to infer additional information about its origin. With the FORS1 instrument of the ESO VLT, we have performed during the 2007 apparition of 133P/Elst-Pizarro quasi-simultaneous photometry and polarimetry of its nucleus at nine epochs in the phase angle range 0 - 20 deg. For each observing epoch, we also combined all available frames to obtain a deep image of the object, to seek signatures of weak cometary activity. Polarimetric data were analysed by means of a novel physical interference modelling. The object brightness was found to be highly variable over timescales <1h, a result fully consistent with previous studies. Using the albedo-polarization relationships for asteroids and our photometric results, we found for our target an albedo of about 0.06-0.07 and a mean radius of about 1.6 km. Throughout the observing epochs, our deep imaging of the comet detects a tail and an anti-tail. Their temporal variations are consistent with an activity profile starting around mid May 2007 of minimum duration of four months. Our images show marginal evidence of a coma around the nucleus. The overall light scattering behaviour (photometry and polarimetry) resembles most closely that of F-type asteroids.Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Extracting clinical information from electronic medical records

    As the adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) rises in the healthcare institutions, these resources are each day more important because of the clinical data they contain about patients. However, the unstructured textual data in the form of narrative present in those records, makes it hard to extract and structure useful clinical information. This unstructured text limits the potential of the EMRs, because the clinical data these records contain, can be used to perform important operations inside healthcare institutions such as searching, summarization, decision support and statistical analysis, as well as be used to support management decisions or serve for research. These operations can only be done if the clinical data from the narratives is properly extracted and structured. Usually this extraction is made manually by healthcare practitioners, what is not efficient and is error-prone. The present work uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Extraction(IE) techniques in order to develop a pipeline system that can extract clinical information directly from unstructured texts present in Portuguese EMRs, in an automated way, in order to help EMRs to fulfil their potential.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Summary: We evaluated the effectiveness of supplementation with high dose of oral vitamin D3 to correct vitamin D insufficiency. We have shown that one or two oral bolus of 300,000IU of vitamin D3 can correct vitamin D insufficiency in 50% of patients and that the patients who benefited more from supplementation were those with the lowest baseline levels. Introduction: Adherence with daily oral supplements of vitamin D3 is suboptimal. We evaluated the effectiveness of a single high dose of oral vitamin D3 (300,000IU) to correct vitamin D insufficiency in a rheumatologic population. Methods: Over 1month, 292 patients had levels of 25-OH vitamin D determined. Results were classified as: deficiency 20ng/ml. The lowest the baseline value, the highest the change after 3months (negative relation with a correlation coefficient r = −0.3, p = 0.0007).     Introduction Vitamin D plays a major role in bone metabolismand neuromuscular function. Supplementation with vitamin D iseffective to reduce the risk of fall and of fracture. However adherenceto oral daily vitamin D is low. Screening and correcting vitamin Dinsufficiency in a rheumatologic population could improve bothmorbidity and quality of life. After determining the prevalence ofvitamin D deficiency in this population, we evaluated if supplementationwith a single high dose of oral 25-OH vitamin D3 wassufficient to correct this abnormality.Methods During one month (November 2009), levels of 25-OHvitamin D were systematically determined in our rheumatology outpatientclinic and classified in: vitamin D deficiency (&lt; 10 μg/l),vitamin D insufficiency (10 to 30 μg/l) or normal vitamin D (&gt; 30 μg/l).Patients with insufficiency or deficiency received respectively a singlehigh dose of 300'000 IU or 600'000 IU oral vitamin D3. In addition,all patients with osteoporosis were prescribed daily supplement ofcalcium (1 g) and vitamin D (800 IU). 25-OH vitamin D levels werereevaluated after 3 months.Results Vitamin D levels were initially determined in 292 patients(mean age 53, 211 women, 87 % Caucasian). 77 % had inflammatoryrheumatologic disease (IRD), 20 % osteoporosis (OP) and 12 %degenerative disease (DD). Vitamin D deficiency was present in 20(6.8 %), while 225 (77.1 %) had insufficiency. Of the 245 patientswith levels &lt; 30μg/l, a new determination of vitamin D level wasavailable in 173 (71 %) at 3 months.Conclusion Vitamin D insufficiency is highly prevalent in ourrheumatologic population (84 %), and is not adequately correctedby a single high dose of oral vitamin D3 in &gt; 50 % of the patientswith IRD and DD. In patients with OP, despite association of asingle high dose with daily oral vitamin D supplementation, 40 %of patients are still deficient when reevaluated at 3 months

    High prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in a Swiss rheumatology outpatient population.

    Vitamin D is important for bone metabolism and neuromuscular function. While a routine dosage is often proposed in osteoporotic patients, it is not so evident in rheumatology outpatients where it has been shown that the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D is high. The aim of the current study was to systematically evaluate the vitamin D status in our outpatient rheumatology population to define the severity of the problem according to rheumatologic diseases. During November 2009, all patients were offered a screening test for 25-OH vitamin D levels and categorised as deficient (&lt;10 µg/l [ng/ml] [25 nmol/l]), insufficient (10 µg/l to 30 µg/l [25 to 75 nmol/l]) or normal (&gt;30 µg/l [75 nmol/l]). A total of 272 patients were included. The mean 25-OH vitamin D level was 21 µg/l (range 1.5 to 45.9). A total of 20 patients had vitamin D deficiency, 215 patients had an insufficiency and 37 patients had normal results. In the group of patients with osteoporosis mean level of 25-OH vitamin D was 25 µg/l and 31% had normal results. In patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases (N = 219), the mean level of 25-OH vitamin D was 20.5 µg/l, and only 12% had normal 25-OH vitamin D levels. In the small group of patients with degenerative disease (N = 33), the mean level of 25-OH vitamin D was 21.8 µg/l, and 21% had normal results. Insufficiency and deficiency were even seen in 38% of the patients who were taking supplements. These results confirm that hypovitaminosis D is highly prevalent in an outpatient population of rheumatology patients, affecting 86% of subjects. Despite oral supplementation (taken in 38% of our population), only a quarter of those on oral supplementation attained normal values of 25-OH vitamin D

    Identification of Pro-MMP-7 as a Serum Marker for Renal Cell Carcinoma by Use of Proteomic Analysis

    International audienceBACKGROUND: No validated renal cell carcinoma (RCC) marker is known for detection of asymptomatic disease in selected populations or for prognostic purposes or treatment monitoring. We identified immunogenic proteins as tumor markers for RCC by combining conventional proteome analysis with serological screening, and we investigated the diagnostic clinical value of such markers in serum. METHODS: We studied the immunogenic protein expression profile of CAL 54, a human RCC cell line, by 2-dimensional electrophoresis combined with immunoblotting using sera from healthy donors compared with RCC patients. We developed a homogeneous, fluorescent, dual-monoclonal immunoassay for metalloproteinase 7 (MMP-7) and used it to measure MMP-7 in sera from 30 healthy donors, 30 RCC patients, and 40 control patients. RESULTS: Pro-MMP-7 (29 kDa; pI 7.7) in the CAL 54 cell line secretome was an immunogenic protein reactive with RCC patient sera but not with control sera. The concentrations of pro-MMP-7 were increased (P <0.0001) in sera of RCC patients (median 7.56 microg/L; range 3.12-30.5 microg/L) compared with healthy controls (median 2.13 microg/L; range 0.17-3.5 microg/L). Serum pro-MMP-7 had a sensitivity of 93% (95% CI 78%-99%) at a specificity of 75% (59%-87%) for RCC in the samples tested. CONCLUSION: Proteomics technology combined with serology led to the identification of serum pro-MMP-7 as a marker of RCC and represents a powerful tool in searching for candidate proteins as biomarkers

    Prospects for multiwavelength polarization observations of GRB afterglows and the case GRB 030329

    We explore the prospects for simultaneous, broad-band, multiwavelength polarimetric observations of GRB afterglows. We focus on the role of cosmic dust in GRB host galaxies on the observed percentage polarization of afterglows in the optical/near-infrared bands as a function of redshift. Our driving point is the afterglow of GRB 030329, for which we obtained polarimetric data in the R band and K band simultaneously about 1.5 days after the burst. We argue that polarimetric observations can be very sensitive to dust in a GRB host, because dust can render the polarization of an afterglow wavelength-dependent. We discuss the consequences for the interpretation of observational data and emphasize the important role of very early polarimetric follow-up observations in all bands, when afterglows are still bright, to study the physical properties of dust and magnetic fields in high-z galaxies.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
