Model and neural control of the depth of anesthesia during surgery

    Get PDF
At present, the experimentation of anesthetic drugs on patients requires a regulation protocol, and the response of each patient to several doses of entry drug must be well known. Therefore, the development of pharmacological dose control systems is a promising field of research in anesthesiology. In this paper it has been developed a non-linear compartmental pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamical model which describes the anesthesia depth effect on a sufficiently reliable way over a set of patients with the depth effect quantified by the Bi-Spectral Index. Afterwards, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) predictive controller has been designed based on the depth of anesthesia model so as to keep the patient on the optimum condition while he undergoes surgical treatment. For the purpose of quantifying the efficiency of the neural predictive controller, a classical proportional-integral-derivative controller has also been developed to compare both strategies. Results show the superior performance of predictive neural controller during Bi- Spectral Index reference tracking.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

N-doped activated carbon as support of Pd-Sn bimetallic catalysts for nitrate catalytic reduction

This work studies the catalytic reduction of nitrate using N-doped activated carbon catalysts. Activated carbons were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization (220 °C, 80 % water, 16 h) of garden and park waste and olive stones using (NH4)2SO4 as N source, followed by chemical activation with H3PO4 at 500 °C (N2 atmosphere, 1 h). These were impregnated with Pd and Sn to prepare bimetallic catalysts for nitrate catalytic reduction. N-doping improved the BET surface area up to 1369 m2 g−1 and increased the N content on the catalyst surface to 3 wt%. The N-doped catalysts showed better catalytic performance than the non-doped ones, showing high stability for 100 h on stream, reaching even higher activity than a catalyst supported on a commercial activated carbon. N-doping also showed a positive effect by decreasing NH4+ selectivity. Finally, natural and drinking waters spiked with NO3- were treated in continuous flow, exhibiting the N-doped activated carbon catalysts, prepared from garden and park waste, a high tolerance to ions other than NO3- present in the water solutionThe authors greatly appreciate the financial support from the Spanish MICINN (PID 2019-108445RB-100), Comunidad de Madrid (S2018/ EMT-4344). Cation and anion effect on the biodegradability and toxicity of imidazolium-and choline-based ionic liquids

This work studies the effect of the cation and anion on the biodegradability and inhibition of imidazolium- and choline-based ionic liquids (ILs) using activated sludge. Six commercial ILs, formed by combination of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium (Bmim+) and N,N,N-trimethylethanolammonium (Choline+) cations and chloride (Cl-), acetate (Ac-) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf2-) anions were evaluated, all representative counter-ions with markedly different toxicity and biodegradability. Inherent and fast biodegradability tests were used to evaluate both the microorganism inhibition and the IL biodegradability. In addition, the ecotoxicological response (EC50) of the ILs was studied using activated sludge and Vibrio fischeri (Microtox® test). Bmim+ and NTf2- can be considered as non-biodegradable, whereas aerobic microorganisms easily degraded Choline+ and Ac-. The biodegradation pattern of each cation/anion is nearly unaffected by counter-ion nature. Moreover, concentrations of CholineNTf2 higher than 50 mg/L caused a partial inhibition on microbial activity, in good concordance with its low EC50 (54 mg/L) measured by respiration inhibition test, which alerts on the negative environmental impact of NTf2-containing ILs on the performance of sewage treatment plantsThe authors greatly appreciate financial support from the Spanish MINECO (CTM2016–76564–R), Comunidad de Madrid (BIOTRES–CM, S2018/EMT–4344), and UAM–Santander (CEAL–AL/2015–08). A case of transient osteoporosis of the hips in a 17-year-old-woman is reported. Transient osteoporosis of the hip (TOH) is an uncommon but possibly underdiagnosed condition. The TOH affects previous healthy middle-age men, and women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Its etiology is still unclear. Pain in the hip area and limp are the main clinical signs. The MRI study shows low signal intensity on the Tl weighted images and limp signal intensity on the T2 weighted images in the femoral head and neck. It is generally accepted that the change in MRI is caused by an increase in fluid within the marrow cavities of the femoral head. Differential diagnosis of hip problems is required. The purpose of this report is to review the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of TOH

Monoclonal adrenocortical lesions have been characterized by an inverse correlation between proliferation and apoptosis, and polyclonal lesions show a direct correlation. Their relationship with the vascular pattern remains unknown in adrenocortical nodular hyperplasias (ACNHs), adenomas (ACAs), and carcinomas (ACCs). We studied 20 ACNHs, 25 ACAs, and 10 ACCs (World Health Organization classification criteria) from 55 women. The analysis included X-chromosome inactivation assay (on microdissected samples), slide and flow cytometry, and in situ end labeling. Endothelial cells were stained with anti-CD31, and the blood vessel area and density were quantified by image analysis in the same areas. Appropriate tissue controls were run in every case. Regression analyses between kinetic and vascular features were performed in both polyclonal and monoclonal lesions. Polyclonal patterns were observed in 14 of 18 informative ACNHs and 3 of 22 informative ACAs, and monoclonal patterns were seen in 4 of 18 ACNHs, 19 of 22 ACAs, and 9 of 9 ACCs. A progressive increase in microvessel area was observed in the ACNH–ACA–ACC transition but was statistically significant between benign and malignant lesions only (191.36 ± 168.32 v 958.07 ± 1279.86 μm2; P 186 μm2 (P =.0000008). Monoclonal lesions showed parallel trends (but with opposite signs) for microvessel area and density in comparison with proliferation and apoptosis, whereas polyclonal lesions showed inverse trends. In conclusion, the kinetic advantage of monoclonal adrenal cortical lesions (increased proliferation, decreased apoptosis) is maintained by parallel increases in microvessel area and density. Water management and energy recovery can improve a system’s sustainability and efficiency in a cost-effective solution. This research assesses the renewable energy sources used in the water sector, as well as the related water sector performance indicators within Portuguese water management systems. A deep analysis of 432 water entities in Portugal, based on ERSAR data base, was conducted in order to identify factors to be improved regarding the system efficiency. On the other hand, the potential energy recovery developed in the REDAWN project was also used as a reference for the application of micro hydropower (MHP) solutions in the water sector. A water and energy nexus model was then developed to improve the systems efficiency and sustainability. A real case study in Africa, the Nampula water supply system, located in Mozambique, was selected as a promising potential for energy recovery. The application of a pump-as-turbine (PAT) allows the reduction in system costs and environmental impacts while increasing its efficiency. The proposed MHP has a capacity to generate ~23 MWh/year, providing significant savings. The developed economic analysis indicates the project is profitable, with an IRR ~40% depending on the energy selling price. This project can avoid the emission of more than 12 tCO2 to the atmosphere, and it can help to reduce the system’s real losses by more than 10,000 m3/year. Consequently, it creates a total economic benefit of 7604 EUR/year

Co-application of activated carbon and compost to contaminated soils: toxic elements mobility and PAH degradation and availability

This work assesses the suitability of three commercial activated carbons (ACs) and their combination with olive mill waste compost (AC + C) as amendments for the remediation of two different contaminated soils. The treatments were applied to a mining soil, and their ability to immobilize trace elements was evaluated. Besides, the efficiency of the amendments to degrade and reduce the availability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated in a soil from a wood creosote treatment plant. To this aim, trace elements mobility and PAH degradation and availability were evaluated. Ecotoxicological assays were performed to assess potential toxicity risks in the untreated and the amended soils. In the mining soil, the ACs were able to immobilize metals and As, but the AC + C treatments were more effective than AC. In the PAH-polluted soil, AC treatments promoted the degradation of high molecular weight PAH, but the AC + C amendments further enhanced the degradation of total PAH and reduced the availability of those with 3-rings. The ecotoxicological tests demonstrated an improvement of soil quality when AC and compost were applied together. In conclusion, the co-application of AC and compost reduces the mobility of potentially toxic elements in the polluted mine soil and enhances PAH degradation and reduces PAH availability in the creosote-contaminated soilThis work was fnancially supported by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain, projects CTM2013-47874-C2-R and CTM2013-48697-C2-

The swine industry in Colombia has grown in recent years. A percentage of this industry occurs under technified conditions. However, in several regions of the country, there are small artisanal pig production systems where management exhibits a gradient in animal husbandry from confinement to complete freedom with different health implications. The aim of this study was to identify the most common non-technified forms of pig farming in several regions of Colombia and to explore their implications. Data collection was carried out in the flooded savannas of the Colombian Orinoquia region and through the Classical Swine Fever (CSF) eradication zone, as well as in the Guaviare department. The information was gathered from semi-structured interviews with public officials and local settlers involved in pig farming. The work was carried out in August 2017 and from June to October 2019. In total, the work included a distance of 8,486.4 km along 151 municipalities of the country, and 262 semi-structured interviews were conducted. The following four types of pig farming management were identified: confined, outdoor enclosure, free breeding, and feral or unmanaged breeding. Each management type reflects differences in the need for care, economic investment, escape risk, or pig release frequency, facilitating feral behavior. Furthermore, information on health aspects, food, reproduction, and institutional presence in each municipality as well as on current problems faced by producers for slaughtering and commercialization of pigs was obtained.

Objectives: To estimate the frequency of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the genotype distribution of HPV among women with a Pap smear showing atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) attending the Program for the Detection and Control of Cervical Cancer in Bogotá, Colombia. Study Design: Cervical samples from 200 women with an ASC-US Pap smear were analyzed for the presence of HPV DNA and genotype distribution using a commercial molecular technique (Linear Array®; Roche Molecular Systems, USA). Results: HPV infection was found in 140 women (70%). High-risk HPV types were present in 46.4% of the samples; 16.4% showed a low-risk HPV type, and 37.1% showed both. Of the positive samples, 42.9% were infected with a single viral genotype, whereas 57.1% exhibited multiple HPV infections. The most common HPV genotypes were HPV 16, 53, and 52 with a prevalence of 26.4, 16.4, and 13.6%, respectively. Conclusion: The epidemiological characterization of HPV infections described in this study might guide actions for epidemiological surveillance to strengthen the program in Bogotá and to develop appropriate HPV vaccination programs.Instituto de Genética Veterinari
