The Impact of Pictorial Display on Operator Learning and Performance
The effects of pictorially displayed information on human learning and performance of a simple control task were investigated. The controlled system was a harmonic oscillator and the system response was displayed to subjects as either an animated pendulum or a horizontally moving dot. Results indicated that the pendulum display did not effect performance scores but did significantly effect the learning processes of individual operators. The subjects with the pendulum display demonstrated more vertical internal models early in the experiment and the manner in which their internal models were tuned with practice showed increased variability between subjects
Growth, Injury, and Population Dynamics in the Extant Cyrtocrinid Holopus mikihe (Crinoidea, Echinodermata) near Roatan, Honduras
The crinoid order Cyrtocrinida is known mainly from Mesozoic fossils; its few surviving members, all from bathyal environments, are among the most peculiar living crinoids. Cyrtocrinids attributed to Holopus mikihe Donovan and Pawson, 2008, have been observed in large numbers via submersible off the western coast of Roatán, Honduras, on vertical and overhanging walls at depths between 430 and 640 m. Observations in 2012, 2013, and 2014 have permitted the first estimates of population structure, growth, and regeneration. Two size modes were observed; the flat barnacle-like “juvenile” stage resembles confamilial and co-occurring Cyathidium pourtalesiAméziane, 1999, whereas the larger “adults” elevate the crown on a stumplike calyx. The 99th percentile growth rate was 0.19 cm yr–1, giving a minimum predicted age of 16 yrs for the largest specimen and 8.7 yrs for the median specimen; the median growth rate was 0.04 cm yr–1, corresponding to 72 and 39 yrs. However, the slower rate of growth in juvenile compared to adult specimens means that these ages are underestimates; actual median age may be closer to 50 yrs. Arm regeneration rate is estimated at 0.6 cm yr–1, and 9.8% of adult individuals were visibly injured, giving an interval of about 1.4 yrs between arm loss events. No recruitment or mortality was observed, and aggregations of evenly-sized individuals were prevalent, consistent with sporadic local recruitment and mortality
Multiple exciton generation in nano-crystals revisited: Consistent calculation of the yield based on pump-probe spectroscopy
Multiple exciton generation (MEG) is a process in which more than one exciton
is generated upon the absorption of a high energy photon, typically higher than
two times the band gap, in semiconductor nanocrystals. It can be observed
experimentally using time resolved spectroscopy such as the transient
absorption measurements. Quantification of the MEG yield is usu- ally done by
assuming that the bi-exciton signal is twice the signal from a single exciton.
Herein we show that this assumption is not always justified and may lead to
significant errors in the estimated MEG yields. We develop a methodology to
determine proper scaling factors to the signals from the transient absorption
experiments. Using the methodology we find modest MEG yields in lead
chalcogenide nanocrystals including the nanorods
Rotation Measure Synthesis of Galactic Polarized Emission with the DRAO 26-m Telescope
Radio polarimetry at decimetre wavelengths is the principal source of
information on the Galactic magnetic field. The diffuse polarized emission is
strongly influenced by Faraday rotation in the magneto-ionic medium and
rotation measure is the prime quantity of interest, implying that all Stokes
parameters must be measured over wide frequency bands with many frequency
channels. The DRAO 26-m Telescope has been equipped with a wideband feed, a
polarization transducer to deliver both hands of circular polarization, and a
receiver, all operating from 1277 to 1762 MHz. Half-power beamwidth is between
40 and 30 arcminutes. A digital FPGA spectrometer, based on commercially
available components, produces all Stokes parameters in 2048 frequency channels
over a 485-MHz bandwidth. Signals are digitized to 8 bits and a Fast Fourier
Transform is applied to each data stream. Stokes parameters are then generated
in each frequency channel. This instrument is in use at DRAO for a Northern sky
polarization survey. Observations consist of scans up and down the Meridian at
a drive rate of 0.9 degree per minute to give complete coverage of the sky
between declinations -30 degree and 90 degree. This paper presents a complete
description of the receiver and data acquisition system. Only a small fraction
of the frequency band of operation is allocated for radio astronomy, and about
20 percent of the data are lost to interference. The first 8 percent of data
from the survey are used for a proof-of-concept study, which has led to the
first application of Rotation Measure Synthesis to the diffuse Galactic
emission obtained with a single-antenna telescope. We find rotation measure
values for the diffuse emission as high as approximately 100 rad per square

CN and HCN in Dense Interstellar Clouds
We present a theoretical investigation of CN and HCN molecule formation in
dense interstellar clouds. We study the gas-phase CN and HCN production
efficiencies from the outer photon-dominated regions (PDRs) into the opaque
cosmic-ray dominated cores. We calculate the equilibrium densities of CN and
HCN, and of the associated species C+, C, and CO, as functions of the
far-ultraviolet (FUV) optical depth. We consider isothermal gas at 50 K, with
hydrogen particle densities from 10^2 to 10^6 cm^-3. We study clouds that are
exposed to FUV fields with intensities 20 to 2*10^5 times the mean interstellar
FUV intensity. We assume cosmic-ray H2 ionization rates ranging from 5*10^-17
s^-1, to an enhanced value of 5*10^-16 s^-1. We also examine the sensitivity of
the density profiles to the gas-phase sulfur abundance.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 33 pages, 8 figure

In their book Rapoport and Zink constructed rigid analytic period spaces
for Fontaine's filtered isocrystals, and period morphisms from PEL
moduli spaces of -divisible groups to some of these period spaces. They
conjectured the existence of an \'etale bijective morphism of
rigid analytic spaces and of a universal local system of -vector spaces on
. For Hodge-Tate weights and we construct in this article an
intrinsic Berkovich open subspace of and the universal local
system on . We conjecture that the rigid-analytic space associated with
is the maximal possible , and that is connected. We give
evidence for these conjectures and we show that for those period spaces
possessing PEL period morphisms, equals the image of the period morphism.
Then our local system is the rational Tate module of the universal
-divisible group and enjoys additional functoriality properties. We show
that only in exceptional cases equals all of and when the

Spatial calibration of an optical see-through head-mounted display
We present here a method for calibrating an optical see-through Head Mounted Display (HMD) using techniques usually applied to camera calibration (photogrammetry). Using a camera placed inside the HMD to take pictures simultaneously of a tracked object and features in the HMD display, we could exploit established camera calibration techniques to recover both the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the~HMD (width, height, focal length, optic centre and principal ray of the display). Our method gives low re-projection errors and, unlike existing methods, involves no time-consuming and error-prone human measurements, nor any prior estimates about the HMD geometry
Robot-Assisted Prostate Brachytherapy
Abstract: In contemporary brachytherapy procedures, needle placement at the desired target is challenging due to a variety of reasons. A robot-assisted brachytherapy system can potentially improve needle placement and seed delivery, resulting in enhanced therapeutic delivery. In this paper we present a 16 DOF (degrees-of-freedom) robotic system (9DOF positioning module and 7DOF surgery module) developed and fabricated for prostate brachytherapy. Strategies to reduce needle deflection and target movement were incorporated after extensive experimental validation. Provisions for needle motion and force feedback were included into the system for improving robot control and seed delivery. Preliminary experimental results reveal that the prototype system is sufficiently accurate in placing brachytherapy needles
Tomato protoplast DNA transformation: physical linkage and recombination of exogenous DNA sequences
Tomato protoplasts have been transformed with plasmid DNA's, containing a chimeric kanamycin resistance gene and putative tomato origins of replication. A calcium phosphate-DNA mediated transformation procedure was employed in combination with either polyethylene glycol or polyvinyl alcohol. There were no indications that the tomato DNA inserts conferred autonomous replication on the plasmids. Instead, Southern blot hybridization analysis of seven kanamycin resistant calli revealed the presence of at least one kanamycin resistance locus per transformant integrated in the tomato nuclear DNA. Generally one to three truncated plasmid copies were found integrated into the tomato nuclear DNA, often physically linked to each other. For one transformant we have been able to use the bacterial ampicillin resistance marker of the vector plasmid pUC9 to 'rescue' a recombinant plasmid from the tomato genome. Analysis of the foreign sequences included in the rescued plasmid showed that integration had occurred in a non-repetitive DNA region. Calf-thymus DNA, used as a carrier in transformation procedure, was found to be covalently linked to plasmid DNA sequences in the genomic DNA of one transformant. A model is presented describing the fate of exogenously added DNA during the transformation of a plant cell. The results are discussed in reference to the possibility of isolating DNA sequences responsible for autonomous replication in tomato.
TIA1 Mutations in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Frontotemporal Dementia Promote Phase Separation and Alter Stress Granule Dynamics.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are age-related neurodegenerative disorders with shared genetic etiologies and overlapping clinical and pathological features. Here we studied a novel ALS/FTD family and identified the P362L mutation in the low-complexity domain (LCD) of T cell-restricted intracellular antigen-1 (TIA1).
