Gluon and Ghost Dynamics from Lattice QCD
The two point gluon and ghost correlation functions and the three gluon
vertex are investigated, in the Landau gauge, using lattice simulations. For
the two point functions, we discuss the approach to the continuum limit looking
at the dependence on the lattice spacing and volume. The analytical structure
of the propagators is also investigated by computing the corresponding spectral
functions using an implementation of the Tikhonov regularisation to solve the
integral equation. For the three point function we report results when the
momentum of one of the gluon lines is set to zero and discuss its implications.Comment: Proceedings of Light Cone 2016, held in Lisbon, September 2016. Minor

Living on a trophic subsidy: Algal quality drives an upper-shore herbivore’s consumption, preference and absorption but not growth rates
Indexación: Scopus. The transfer of seaweeds from subtidal bottoms to nearby intertidal rocky shores is a common but often overlooked phenomenon. Freshly detached seaweeds often represent critical trophic subsidies for herbivores living in upper-shore rocky intertidal areas, such as the marine snail Diloma nigerrima. This species relies on three species of seaweeds for food and displays feeding strategies to deal with a resource that is scarce and at times unpredictable. This study focused on the nutritional quality of freshly detached algae (Durvillaea antarctica, Lessonia spicata and Lessonia trabeculata) and measured Diloma nigerrima’s algal consumption rates in trials with and without choice. Absorption efficiency and growth of individual snails fed on each alga were also measured. Durvillaea antarctica had the highest nutritional quality and was the most consumed algae in both single and multiple-choice trials. Absorption efficiency was also highest for D. antarctica but growth rates of snails fed with this species were similar to those fed with the other algae. Combined, these results suggest that D. nigerrima has the ability to discriminate among seaweeds based on their nutritional quality. A potential increase in oxygen uptake when D. nigerrima is consuming the preferred food item is also proposed as a plausible hypothesis to explain the mismatch between snails’ preference and growth rate. These results aim to guide further studies on trophic subsidies and their role in coastal systems. © 2018 Quintanilla-Ahumada et al. Spatially resolved integral field spectroscopy of the ionized gas in IZw18
We present a detailed 2D study of the ionized ISM of IZw18 using new PMAS-IFU
optical observations. IZw18 is a high-ionization galaxy which is among the most
metal-poor starbursts in the local Universe. This makes IZw18 a local benchmark
for understanding the properties most closely resembling those prevailing at
distant starbursts. Our IFU-aperture (~ 1.4 kpc x 1.4 kpc) samples the entire
IZw18 main body and an extended region of its ionized gas. Maps of relevant
emission lines and emission line ratios show that higher-excitation gas is
preferentially located close to the NW knot and thereabouts. We detect a
Wolf-Rayet feature near the NW knot. We derive spatially resolved and
integrated physical-chemical properties for the ionized gas in IZw18. We find
no dependence between the metallicity-indicator R23 and the ionization
parameter (as traced by [OIII]/[OII]) across IZw18. Over ~ 0.30 kpc^2, using
the [OIII]4363 line, we compute Te[OIII] values (~ 15000 - 25000 K), and oxygen
abundances are derived from the direct determinations of Te[OIII]. More than
70% of the higher-Te[OIII] (> 22000 K) spaxels are HeII4686-emitting spaxels
too. From a statistical analysis, we study the presence of variations in the
ISM physical-chemical properties. A galaxy-wide homogeneity, across hundreds of
parsecs, is seen in O/H. Based on spaxel-by-spaxel measurements, the
error-weighted mean of 12 + log(O/H) = 7.11 +/- 0.01 is taken as the
representative O/H for IZw18. Aperture effects on the derivation of O/H are
discussed. Using our IFU data we obtain, for the first time, the IZw18
integrated spectrum.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 10 figures, 4 table
Multiscale Partition of Unity
We introduce a new Partition of Unity Method for the numerical homogenization
of elliptic partial differential equations with arbitrarily rough coefficients.
We do not restrict to a particular ansatz space or the existence of a finite
element mesh. The method modifies a given partition of unity such that optimal
convergence is achieved independent of oscillation or discontinuities of the
diffusion coefficient. The modification is based on an orthogonal decomposition
of the solution space while preserving the partition of unity property. This
precomputation involves the solution of independent problems on local
subdomains of selectable size. We deduce quantitative error estimates for the
method that account for the chosen amount of localization. Numerical
experiments illustrate the high approximation properties even for 'cheap'
parameter choices.Comment: Proceedings for Seventh International Workshop on Meshfree Methods

Finding the jigsaw piece for our jigsaw puzzle with corporate social responsibility: the impact of CSR on prospective applicants’ responses
Purpose – This study aims to examine the influence of different corporate social responsibility (CSR) dimensions on prospective applicants’ responses, namely, organizational attractiveness and intention to apply for a job vacancy (IAJV). Design/methodology/approach – Using an experimental 2 × 3 crossed factorial design (n = 195), the level of engagement of a hypothetical company in socially responsible practices (high vs low) was manipulated concerning three dimensions of CSR (employees, community and environment and economic level). Participants were randomly assigned to one of the six conditions and, after reading the corresponding scenario, were asked to evaluate the extent to which the company was considered a good place to work and their IAJV in it. Findings – The level of engagement in socially responsible practices had a positive effect both on the degree to which participants favorably perceived the organization as a place to work and on their IAJV. Furthermore, the level of engagement in practices toward employees and in the economic domain had a stronger effect on participants’ responses than the engagement in practices that benefit community and environment. Research limitations/implications – Data were obtained in a laboratory setting, so the generalization of results to actual job search settings must be made with caution. Practical implications – CSR can be a source of competitive advantage in the recruitment of new employees. Because not all CSR dimensions have the same effect on applicants’ responses, companies should take into account the CSR dimensions in which they are engaged and communicate them to the public. Originality/value – As far as we know, this is the first study to examine the impact of different CSR dimensions both on organizational attractiveness and IAJV

Re-inventing Portuguese ceramic tiles: Using shape grammars as generative method and the impact on design methodology
The following paper describes the process and results achieved with the workshop entitled ‘Re-inventing Portuguese ceramic tiles’ reflecting on design methodology and design teaching.
Workshop participants were invited to rethink ceramic tile patterns developing a different process which used shape grammars as a generative system.
Each participant group developed a three stage task using shape grammars principles and methodology.
At a first stage all were exposed to the shape grammar formulation and rule system.
At a second stage they had to explore shape rules and create a novel shape grammar.
Each design solutions generated were presented for discussion.
On the last stage all groups were presented with pre-existing patterns, invited to infer a grammar by extracting shape rules observed through design patterns and then extrapolate these findings to a third dimension.
The preliminary results of stages two and three are of particular relevance in shape grammar research: shape grammar formulae does not constitute an intuitive process to most creative designers which are often trained to design singular solutions for a specific problem, more than one operative shape grammar can be formulated to represent the same corpus of solutions and lastly the generative potential of grammars transcends the normal capacities of the original grammarist aiding in design exploration and enlarging the corpus of feasible solutions.
This paper also reflects on the impact of shape grammars as a design methodology.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Communications-Inspired Projection Design with Application to Compressive Sensing
We consider the recovery of an underlying signal x \in C^m based on
projection measurements of the form y=Mx+w, where y \in C^l and w is
measurement noise; we are interested in the case l < m. It is assumed that the
signal model p(x) is known, and w CN(w;0,S_w), for known S_W. The objective is
to design a projection matrix M \in C^(l x m) to maximize key
information-theoretic quantities with operational significance, including the
mutual information between the signal and the projections I(x;y) or the Renyi
entropy of the projections h_a(y) (Shannon entropy is a special case). By
capitalizing on explicit characterizations of the gradients of the information
measures with respect to the projections matrix, where we also partially extend
the well-known results of Palomar and Verdu from the mutual information to the
Renyi entropy domain, we unveil the key operations carried out by the optimal
projections designs: mode exposure and mode alignment. Experiments are
considered for the case of compressive sensing (CS) applied to imagery. In this
context, we provide a demonstration of the performance improvement possible
through the application of the novel projection designs in relation to
conventional ones, as well as justification for a fast online projections
design method with which state-of-the-art adaptive CS signal recovery is
achieved.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, parts of material published in IEEE ICASSP 2012,
