    Experimental data obtained at the Yakutsk array after the modernization in 1993 are analyzed. The characteristics of EAS longitudinal and radial development found from the charged particle flux and EAS Cherenkov light registered at the Yakutsk complex array are presented.     Development of an Automated Approach for Updating of the Annual Runoff Module Map

    Several Russian Hydropower Design and Research Institutes have recently fulfilled studies of hydropower potential estimation for NorthWest, Caucasian and Angara River’s regions in Russia. An approach to automate the calculation of river flow characteristics, based on the usage of annual flow rate map, was proposed and tested by the authors for the aims of the studies.Annual river flow characteristics together with the terrain data are the most important data sources for evaluation of the hydropower potential.A set of requirements was made for the approach and for automation of annual flow rate maps creation in order to provide ability for updates in every 5-10 years.A problem of lack of hydrological data for small and medium sized rivers was faced. To determine the hydrological characteristics the Russian code specification "Determination of Design Hydrological Performance" was used for the conditions of the lack of hydrological data, methods of spatial interpolation were also used.To solve the problems it is necessary to define the parameters of the annual flow distribution: average annual flow, variation coefficient, coefficient of skewness.Mapping is based on the assumption of a smooth change of annual flow rate for any territory in accordance with the distribution of climatic and physiographic factors (topography, soil, groundwater depth, etc.).Milestones of flow rate mapping included: preparation of hydrological initial data; creating of the updated flow rate maps; determination of the corrections to the influence of local azonal factors; estimation of the accuracy of flow characteristics calculations.In order to update the annual flow rate maps a special GIS application “Hydrologist” was created. The GIS application includes computer-assisted tool for processing the hydrological data, import/export tools, tools for analysis of area zoning data, tools for analysis of annual flow rate values in centroids of drainage-basins, location of water stage gauges, also the old and updated flow rate maps.The article deals with the approach description, main problems that were faced and presenting the results.The technology has been applied for North-West, Volga and Siberian Federal Districts in Russia. Comparison of the created annual flow rate map with the previously used map shows that the updated map is better of acquiring hydrological data for small and medium sized rivers

    The Das-Mathur-Okubo sum rule for the charged pion polarizability in a chiral model

    The Das-Mathur-Okubo (DMO) sum rule for the polarizability of charged pions is evaluated for the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model Lagrangian in both its minimal and extended forms. A comparison is made with the results obtained using the same sum rule from chiral perturbation theory (CHPT), approximate QCD sum rule calculations, explicit calculations on the lattice by Wilcox, and using the semi-empirical Kapusta-Shuryak spectral densities. The χ\chiPT results from Compton scattering are also given. We point to a delicate cancellation between the intrinsic and recoil contributions to απ±\alpha_{\pi^\pm} in the DMO sum rule approach that can lead to calculated polarizabilities of either sign.Comment: 10 LaTeX pages plus one postscript figure, to be published in Physics Letters

    The energy spectrum of UHECRs is discussed on the basis of the Yakutsk array database analysis. In the region E=0.1 to 30 EeV the showers are detected under trigger-500, while at energies above 30 EeV the whole acceptance area for trigger-1000 is used in order to utilize all the data available in the region of GZK cutoff.Comment: Invited talk at CRIS2004: GZK and surroundings, Catania, Italy, 31.05.04.     Two-proton overlap functions in the Jastrow correlation method and cross section of the 16^{16}O(e,epp)14(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}Cg.s._{\rm g.s.} reaction

    Using the relationship between the two-particle overlap functions (TOF's) and the two-body density matrix (TDM), the TOF's for the 16^{16}O(e,epp)14(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}Cg.s._{\rm g.s.} reaction are calculated on the basis of a TDM obtained within the Jastrow correlation method. The main contributions of the removal of 1S0^1S_0 and 3P1^3P_1 pppp pairs from 16^{16}O are considered in the calculation of the cross section of the 16^{16}O(e,epp)14(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}Cg.s._{\rm g.s.} reaction using the Jastrow TOF's which include short-range correlations (SRC). The results are compared with the cross sections calculated with different theoretical treatments of the TOF's.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, ReVTeX

    Grain boundary effects on magnetotransport in bi-epitaxial films of La0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}MnO3_3

    The low field magnetotransport of La0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}MnO3_3 (LSMO) films grown on SrTiO3_3 substrates has been investigated. A high qualtity LSMO film exhibits anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and a peak in the magnetoresistance close to the Curie temperature of LSMO. Bi-epitaxial films prepared using a seed layer of MgO and a buffer layer of CeO2_2 display a resistance dominated by grain boundaries. One film was prepared with seed and buffer layers intact, while a second sample was prepared as a 2D square array of grain boundaries. These films exhibit i) a low temperature tail in the low field magnetoresistance; ii) a magnetoconductance with a constant high field slope; and iii) a comparably large AMR effect. A model based on a two-step tunneling process, including spin-flip tunneling, is discussed and shown to be consistent with the experimental findings of the bi-epitaxial films.Comment: REVTeX style; 14 pages, 9 figures.     Effects of anisotropic spin-exchange interactions in spin ladders

    We investigate the effects of the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya (DM) and Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (KSEA) interactions on various thermodynamic and magnetic properties of a spin 1/2 ladder. Using the Majorana fermion representation, we derive the spectrum of low energy excitations for a pure DM interaction and in presence of a superimposed KSEA interaction. We calculate the various correlation functions for both cases and discuss how they are modified with respect to the case of an isotropic ladder. We also discuss the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum of the system and show that it is strongly influenced by the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya vector. Implications of our calculations for NMR and ESR experiments on ladder systems are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 4 eps figures, corrected calculation of NMR rate (v3

    Thomson and Compton scattering with an intense laser pulse

    Our paper concerns the scattering of intense laser radiation on free electrons and it is focused on the relation between nonlinear Compton and nonlinear Thomson scattering. The analysis is performed for a laser field modeled by an ideal pulse with a finite duration, a fixed direction of propagation and indefinitely extended in the plane perpendicular to it. We derive the classical limit of the quantum spectral and angular distribution of the emitted radiation, for an arbitrary polarization of the laser pulse. We also rederive our result directly, in the framework of classical electrodynamics, obtaining, at the same time, the distribution for the emitted radiation with a well defined polarization. The results reduce to those established by Krafft et al. [Phys. Rev. E 72, 056502 (2005)] in the particular case of linear polarization of the pulse, orthogonal to the initial electron momentum. Conditions in which the differences between classical and quantum results are visible are discussed and illustrated by graphs

    A GG-strand is a map g(t,s):R×RGg(t,{s}):\,\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}\to G for a Lie group GG that follows from Hamilton's principle for a certain class of GG-invariant Lagrangians. The SO(3)-strand is the GG-strand version of the rigid body equation and it may be regarded physically as a continuous spin chain. Here, SO(3)KSO(3)_K-strand dynamics for ellipsoidal rotations is derived as an Euler-Poincar\'e system for a certain class of variations and recast as a Lie-Poisson system for coadjoint flow with the same Hamiltonian structure as for a perfect complex fluid. For a special Hamiltonian, the SO(3)KSO(3)_K-strand is mapped into a completely integrable generalization of the classical chiral model for the SO(3)-strand. Analogous results are obtained for the Sp(2)Sp(2)-strand. The Sp(2)Sp(2)-strand is the GG-strand version of the Sp(2)Sp(2) Bloch-Iserles ordinary differential equation, whose solutions exhibit dynamical sorting. Numerical solutions show nonlinear interactions of coherent wave-like solutions in both cases. Diff(R){\rm Diff}(\mathbb{R})-strand equations on the diffeomorphism group G=Diff(R)G={\rm Diff}(\mathbb{R}) are also introduced and shown to admit solutions with singular support (e.g., peakons).Comment: 35 pages, 5 figures, 3rd version.     Exotic Meson Production in the f1(1285)πf_{1}(1285)\pi^{-} System observed in the Reaction πpηπ+ππp\pi^{-} p \to \eta\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{-} p at 18 GeV/c

    This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the πππ+η\pi^{-}\pi^{-}\pi^{+}\eta final state in πp\pi^{-}p collisions at 18GeV/c. Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, JPC=1+J^{PC} = 1^{-+} in the decay channel f1(1285)πf_{1}(1285)\pi^{-}. The mass M=1709±24±41M = 1709 \pm 24 \pm 41 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=403±80±115\Gamma = 403 \pm 80 \pm 115 MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent with the parameters of the previously observed π1(1600)\pi_{1}(1600). The second resonance with mass M=2001±30±92M = 2001 \pm 30 \pm 92 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=333±52±49\Gamma = 333 \pm 52 \pm 49 MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical models. In addition, the presence of π2(1900)\pi_{2}(1900) is confirmed with mass M=2003±88±148M = 2003 \pm 88 \pm 148 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=306±132±121\Gamma = 306 \pm 132 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and a new state, a1(2096)a_{1}(2096), is observed with mass M=2096±17±121M = 2096 \pm 17 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=451±41±81\Gamma = 451 \pm 41 \pm 81 MeV/c^2. The decay properties of these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers
