Nano aerosols in the Postojnska jama
At the lowest point in the Postojnska Jama (jama = cave), concentration and size distribution of non-radioactive aerosols in the size range of 10–1,000 nm were measured and their concentrations are compared with those of radioactive aerosols carrying radon short-lived decay products (218Po, 214Pb and 214Bi) obtained previously. Concentration of non-radioactive aerosols during morning hours was in the range 600–2,750 cm–3, with about 90% of particles smaller than 50 nm. On the other hand, concentration of radioactive aerosols smaller than 50 nm was several radionuclide atoms per 1 cm3 and the bigger ones, less than 1 atom per 1 cm3

Glycoprotein YKL-40: a novel biomarker of chronic graftvs- host disease activity and severity?
Aim To investigate whether increased YKL-40 levels positively
correlate with graft-vs-host disease (cGVHD) activity
and severity and if YKL-40 could serve as a disease biomarker.
Methods This case-control study was conducted at the
University Hospital Centre Zagreb from July 2013 to October
2015. 56 patients treated with hematopoietic stem
cell transplantation (HSCT) were included: 35 patients with
cGVHD and 21 without cGVHD. There was no difference
between groups in age, sex, median time from transplant
to study enrollment, intensity of conditioning, type of donor,
or source of stem cells. Blood samples were collected
at study enrollment and YKL-40 levels were measured with
ELISA. Disease activity was estimated using Clinician’s Impression
of Activity and Intensity of Immunosuppression
scales and disease severity using Global National Institutes
of Health (NIH) score.
Results YKL-40 levels were significantly higher in cGVHD
patients than in controls (P = 0.003). The difference remained
significant when patients with myelofibrosis were
excluded from the analysis (P = 0.017). YKL-40 level significantly
positively correlated with disease severity (P < 0.001;
correlation coefficient 0.455), and activity estimated using
Clinician’s Impression of Activity (P = 0.016; correlation coefficient
0.412) but not using Intensity of Immunosuppression
(P = 0.085; correlation coefficient 0.296).
Conclusion YKL-40 could be considered a biomarker of
cGVHD severity and activity. However, validation in a larger
group of patients is warranted, as well as longitudinal
testing of YKL-40 levels in patients at risk of developing
cGVHD
SYNOVIAL CHONDROMATOSIS
Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon benign disorder of the synovial membrane of joints, tendon sheaths, or bursae characterized by the formation of multiple cartilaginous nodules or osseus loose bodies. It is usually a monoarticular disease, and 33 different localizations have been described until now. The aim of this review article is to present the newest knowledge on the etiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and management of synovial chondromatosis. Malignant transformation to chondrosarcoma is an unusual but possible complication. It is closely connected with recurrence rate and usually occurs many years after surgical treatment. More specific details related to surgical treatment of most often affected joints, i.e. shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle are reported as well at the end of this review article
A Novel Method to Stimulate Lymphatic Clearance of Beta-Amyloid from Mouse Brain Using Noninvasive Music-Induced Opening of the Blood–Brain Barrier with EEG Markers
The lymphatic system of the brain meninges and head plays a crucial role in the clearance of amyloid-β protein (Aβ), a peptide thought to be pathogenic in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), from the brain. The development of methods to modulate lymphatic clearance of Aβ from the brain coild be a revolutionary step in the therapy of AD. The opening of the blood–brain barrier (OBBB) by focused ultrasound is considered as a possible tool for stimulation of clearance of Aβ from the brain of humans and animals. Here, we propose an alternative method of noninvasive music-induced OBBB that is accompanied by the activation of clearance of fluorescent Aβ (Fαβ) from the mouse brain. Using confocal imaging, fluorescence microscopy, and magnetic resonance tomography, we clearly demonstrate that OBBB by music stimulates the movement of Fαβ and Omniscan in the cerebrospinal fluid and lymphatic clearance of Fαβ from the brain. We propose the extended detrended fluctuation analysis (EDFA) as a promising method for the identification of OBBB markers in the electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns. These pilot results suggest that music-induced OBBB and the EDFA analysis of EEG can be a noninvasive, low-cost, labeling-free, clinical perspective and completely new approach for the treatment and monitoring of AD.Peer Reviewe
PESFOR-W: Improving the design and environmental effectiveness of woodlands for water Payments for Ecosystem Services
ABSTRACT: The EU Water Framework Directive aims to ensure restoration of Europe?s water bodies to ?good ecological status? by 2027. Many Member States will struggle to meet this target, with around half of EU river catchments currently reporting below standard water quality. Diffuse pollution from agriculture represents a major pressure, affecting over 90% of river basins. Accumulating evidence shows that recent improvements to agricultural practices are benefiting water quality but in many cases will be insufficient to achieve WFD objectives. There is growing support for land use change to help bridge the gap, with a particular focus on targeted tree planting to intercept and reduce the delivery of diffuse pollutants to water. This form of integrated catchment management offers multiple benefits to society but a significant cost to landowners and managers.
New economic instruments, in combination with spatial targeting, need to be developed to ensure cost effective solutions - including tree planting for water benefits - are realised. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are flexible, incentive-based mechanisms that could play an important role in promoting land use change to deliver water quality targets. The PESFOR-W COST Action will consolidate learning from existing woodlands for water PES schemes in Europe and help standardize approaches to evaluating the environmental effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of woodland measures. It will also create a European network through which PES schemes can be facilitated, extended and improved, for example by incorporating other ecosystem services linking with aims of the wider forestscarbon policy nexus

Affective interpersonal touch in close relationships: a cross-cultural perspective
Interpersonal touch behavior differs across cultures, yet no study to date has systematically tested for cultural variation in affective touch, nor examined the factors that might account for this variability. Here, over 14,000 individuals from 45 countries were asked whether they embraced, stroked, kissed, or hugged their partner, friends, and youngest child during the week preceding the study. We then examined a range of hypothesized individual-level factors (sex, age, parasitic history, conservatism, religiosity, and preferred interpersonal distance) and cultural-level factors (regional temperature, parasite stress, regional conservatism, collectivism, and religiosity) in predicting these affective-touching behaviors. Our results indicate that affective touch was most prevalent in relationships with partners and children, and its diversity was relatively higher in warmer, less conservative, and religious countries, and among younger, female, and liberal people. This research allows for a broad and integrated view of the bases of cross-cultural variability in affective touch
