A recursion-theoretic characterisation of the positive polynomial-time functions

We extend work of Lautemann, Schwentick and Stewart [Clemens Lautemann et al., 1996] on characterisations of the "positive" polynomial-time predicates (posP, also called mP by Grigni and Sipser [Grigni and Sipser, 1992]) to function classes. Our main result is the obtention of a function algebra for the positive polynomial-time functions (posFP) by imposing a simple uniformity constraint on the bounded recursion operator in Cobham\u27s characterisation of FP. We show that a similar constraint on a function algebra based on safe recursion, in the style of Bellantoni and Cook [Stephen Bellantoni and Stephen A. Cook, 1992], yields an "implicit" characterisation of posFP, mentioning neither explicit bounds nor explicit monotonicity constraints

Terrestrial mammals of Mozambique : current knowledge and future challenges for conservation

Nations must know on what and where to conserve, as required by Convention on Biological Diversity. Only by knowing where we should trust our knowledge of species occurrence, we will be able to make accurate decisions and efficiently allocate the limited resources for improving quality and coverage of species occurrence and distribution and safeguarding biodiversity. Existing knowledge about the biodiversity of Mozambique is scarce across most taxonomic groups. Long periods of armed conflict seriously affected wildlife and scientific research, contributing to this lack of knowledge. This doctoral thesis aimed to compile and map current knowledge about the occurrence of terrestrial mammal fauna in Mozambique, to discuss the challenges for biodiversity conservation in the country. To meet these objectives, an inventory on terrestrial mammal presence was compiling integrating primary species-occurrence data from 1) the GBIF portal; 2) natural history collections; 3) recent survey reports, and 4) scientific literature. The first part of this thesis focuses on the update of the list of terrestrial mammal species reported for the country. The second part investigates the data bias and gaps in knowledge regarding the distribution of terrestrial mammals in Mozambique, providing priority areas for future surveys. The third part offers a first assessment on the effectiveness of Mozambique’s conservation areas to protect the lesser-known taxa given global change and further suggests priority areas for conservation. As a final contribution of this research, we discuss the contribution of different data sources to the inventory and the importance of digitization and mobilization of biodiversity data in poorly studied countries. Overall, the study developed in this thesis is an important starting point and a valuable resource for understanding the occurrence and distribution of terrestrial mammals in Mozambique, contributing with a dataset now acessible for researchers and decision-makers

A polyhedral approach for the Equitable Coloring Problem

In this work we study the polytope associated with a 0,1-integer programming formulation for the Equitable Coloring Problem. We find several families of valid inequalities and derive sufficient conditions in order to be facet-defining inequalities. We also present computational evidence that shows the efficacy of these inequalities used in a cutting-plane algorithm

As competências de mestre revelam a capacidade que temos para gerir todo o conhecimento, competências e recursos disponíveis ao nosso alcance. No sentido de garantir uma prestação de cuidados seguros e com o máximo de qualidade possível. Reflete a capacidade de mobilizar o capital humano e recursos disponíveis em prol do bem mais valioso do ser humano, a saúde. A formação contínua permite a atualização e aquisição de conhecimentos, fomentando a consolidação de competências que facilitam a resposta às solicitações atuais. A aprendizagem é orientada em função das necessidades sentidas por cada um. Esta busca de conhecimento assenta na reflexão, pois permite avaliar o desempenho, as atitudes e as práticas. O estágio foi realizado num serviço de um hospital privado de Lisboa que devido á extrema abrangência na área da enfermagem médico-cirúrgica, proporciona momentos únicos de aprendizagem, consolidação, aplicação e desenvolvimento de novos conhecimentos e competências. A Metodologia de Projeto possibilita um entrosamento dos aportes teóricos com a realidade laboral. O projeto de intervenção no serviço concretiza-se no âmbito do uso de cateteres venosos centrais, uma prática indispensável e cada vez mais frequente, no entanto não está isenta de riscos e complicações. É um fator que contribui para o aumento do risco de infeção da corrente sanguínea, muitas vezes associada à sua manipulação. A prevenção implica a adoção de um conjunto de medidas preventivas, na inserção, manipulação, manutenção e remoção do cateter central. One Size Does Not Fit All: Exploring the Characteristics of Exit Programmes in Europe

This paper presents findings from semi-structured interviews with 17 practitioners representing 14 exit interventions in 7 European countries. Drawing from the literature, the study identified analytical dimensions that provided the semi-structured interview script’s analytical framework (e.g., programme characteristics, implementation team, type of intervention, contact approach, programmes’ duration, the use of risk and needs assessment tools, follow-up/monitoring strategies/aftercare procedures). Results suggest that the goals, role of ideology and contact approach differ considerably across exit programmes. The use of risk and needs assessment tools is inconsistent across the programmes. The programmes’ evaluation was unstructured and primarily qualitative. The study has practical implications, namely the significant effort required to train exit practitioners in risk and needs assessment tools. A multi-agency approach will help improve the follow-up and aftercare practices. Envolvimento dos estudantes na escola, disrupção escolar e rendimento académico: um estudo com alunos de uma escola TEIP

Este estudo analisou o envolvimento dos/as estudantes na escola, a disrupção escolar e a relação destes com os resultados académicos de uma amostra de 391 alunos distribuídos pelos 5º, 6º, 7º e 9º Anos, de um Agrupamento TEIP. Foram aplicadas escalas de Envolvimento do/a Estudante na Escola e de Disrupção Escolar Professada, comparadas com os resultados médios dos alunos em função de género e ano de escolaridade. Os principais resultados sugerem que neste agrupamento TEIP os estudantes se apresentam como envolvidos e com níveis de disrupção residuais, que as raparigas são mais envolvidas e os rapazes mais disruptivos, que o envolvimento não apresenta um crescimento regular ao longo da escolaridade, sendo os resultados de 2.º ciclo mais elevados do que os do 3.º ciclo, e se encontra relacionado com sucesso académico, sendo os resultados da disrupção escolar constantes ao longo dos anos letivos, antecipando situações de insucesso e abandono escolar; Students engagement with school, school disruption and academic achievement: a study with students of a TEIP School Abstract: This work investigated the engagement of students with the school, school disruption and its relationship with academic achievement in a sample of 391 students distributed by 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th Grade, of a TEIP school. Scales of Engagement of Students at the School and School Disruption Professed were applied, and compared with the average results of students according to gender and grade. The main results suggested that in this TEIP school students present themselves as engaged with residual levels of disruption, that girls are more engaged and boys more disruptive, that engagement does not present a steady growth throughout schooling, and the results of 5th, 6th Grade are higher than 7th and 9th Grade, and are associated with academic success, and the results of school disruption are constant throughout the school years, anticipating situations of school failure and dropout

Motivar para escrever : As oficinas de escrita

O facto de sermos conhecedores da problemática que o ensino da escrita representa no 1º Ciclo do ensino básico através da constatação empírica dos resultados pouco satisfatórios dos alunos a esse nível e inconformados com a falta de motivação que os alunos revelam hoje em dia pela escrita, levou6nos a realizar o presente estudo que pretende aprofundar a problemática da motivação para a escrita. Para isso, foram formuladas três questões que serviram de fio condutor ao longo de todo este processo e às quais tentámos dar resposta: • Qual a razão que leva os nossos alunos a não gostarem de escrever? • Por que razão demonstram os professores tanta dificuldade em cativar os seus alunos para a escrita? • Em que medida o desenvolvimento de um programa de Oficinas de Escrita contribui para a motivação e melhoria dos escritos dos alunos? A fim de responder a tais questões, foi traçado o seguinte desenho investigativo: pré6teste (questionário), plano de acção, pós6teste (questionário), desta forma combinámos a metodologia qualitativa através da investigação6acção, e quantitativa através da aplicação de questionários. No plano de acção, foi desenvolvido um trabalho sistemático no âmbito do ensino da escrita, tendo em conta a importância do ensino explícito dos seguintes processos: a planificação, a textualização, a revisão, a correcção dos textos e a sua possível reescrita. Foi ainda realizado um trabalho de escrita criativa, estando estas duas componentes inseridas na oficina de escrita. A par deste trabalho, foi ainda realizado um estudo com os professores do agrupamento em que leccionámos, a fim de podermos verificar se os professores utilizam, ou não, estratégias pedagógicas motivadoras e inovadoras para o ensino da escrita. Nesta medida, constata6se que, de facto, os alunos ficaram mais motivados para a escrita, no entanto, e relativamente aos professores, concluímos que a maioria ainda não utiliza, no ensino da escrita, actividades motivadoras e potenciadoras do seu desenvolvimento.The fact of we being knowledgeable of the problematic that the writing teaching represents in the Basic Education of 1st Cycle through the empiric constatation of the low satisfaction results that students reveal today by the writing, made us develop this study aims to deepen the problem of motivation for writing. For this, we formulated three questions that served as a guiding principle throughout this process and to which we tried to answer: What is the reason why our students dislike writing? Why do teachers demonstrate so much difficulty in engaging their students in the writing process? To what extent does the development of a program of writing workshops contributes to the motivation and improvement of students' writings? In order to answer such questions, the following research design was drawn: pre6 test (questionnaire), action plan, post6test (questionnaire), this way we agreed the qualitative methodology through of the action6investigation, and quantitative through the questionnaires application. In the action plan a systematic work in the teaching writing was developed, taking into account the importance of explicit teaching in the following processes: the planning, textualization, revision, correction of texts and their possible (or not) rewrite, a work of creative writing was also developed, these two components being inserted into the writing workshop. Along with this work, a research with teachers in the school 6 grouping was also developed, so one can verify that the teachers use, or not, motivating and innovative teaching strategies in order to train writing. To that extent, it appears that, in fact, the students were more motivated to write, however, and in what concerns the teachers, the majority still does not use innovative and motivating activities for the teaching of writing

Este trabalho tem por base a apresentação de um caso concreto de execução de uma Estrutura de Tomada de Água com acompanhamento de uma equipa de fiscalização. Pretende-se analisar o papel da fiscalização, as vantagens que uma equipa traz para o desenvolvimento de uma obra e para o dono de obra, bem como os procedimentos de controlo e verificação das várias actividades desenvolvidas durante a execução da obra. Será efectuada uma avaliação dos procedimentos de controlo de betonagem utilizados em obra e uma posterior proposta de melhoria para o controlo de conformidade dos procedimentos utilizados e efectuado pela equipa de fiscalização de forma a serem garantidos todos os requisitos de qualidade que são exigidos pelo dono de obra; ### Abstrat: This work has for base the presentation of a case concrete of execution of a Structure of Water Taking with accompaniment of one equips of fiscalization.
