Scelestum pectus: incesto, magnicidio y parricidio en Edipo Rey de Séneca. Análisis lexicográfico de un crimen

    Get PDF

Following the ‘golden thread: Exploring the energy dependency of economies and human well-being

Climate change –one of the greatest threats to modern civilisation- has been largely driven by an exponential growth in world energy use in the last couple of centuries. However, societies and economies are dependent on energy use to maintain themselves and change. Thus, in this thesis I compare energy to a ‘golden thread’, which weaves through climate change, economic growth and human well-being. In this context, the challenge I set out to explore in this thesis was to find alternatives for decoupling societal and economic progress from environmentally harmful levels of energy use. In order to open the possibility space for decoupling the energy dependency of the economy from climate change, I used the holistic theoretical framework of surplus energy and developed a novel methodology for calculating Energy Return On Investment (EROI) at the national level. Similarly, in order to open the possibility space for decoupling the energy dependency of society (human well-being) from climate change, I developed an original theoretical framework, integrating the concepts of energy services and human needs, and tested it using an innovative methodology. I found that a national-level EROI can contribute to accelerate a transition away from fossil fuels, by providing evidence at a scale relevant for policymakers. Additionally, I found that the energy services and human needs framework, as well as the methodology to test it, provide a way to prioritise and explore alternatives of energy service delivery. I consider that both of these contributions point towards the possibility of having climate compatible energy dependent societies and economies, as long as there is a fundamental change in the framings, understanding, priorities and methodologies used to find and assess such possibility

Abstract: The article aims to discuss the arguments against the tyranny of the majority exposed in the book On Liberty (1859) by John Stuart Mill. First, we will investigate the harm principle, defended by Mill in his concept of liberty, according to which one can only interfere in the liberty of any individual to guarantee, individually or collectively, self-defense. Next, we will analyze the relationship between this principle and Mill's criticism of the tyranny of the majority. In this way, we will explore how the imposition of the majority rule on individualities is an obstacle to the development and liberty of human beings. In short, we intend to examine, from Mill's political thought, the extent to which government and civil society intervention, supported by the rule of the majority, affects individuals' freedom of choice and action.O artigo tem como objetivo a discussão dos argumentos contra a tirania da maioria expostos no livro On Liberty (1859) de John Stuart Mill.

The guiding thread of the arguments presented by J. S. Mill in On Liberty is that the development of humanity has its infallible and permanent source in the spirit of freedom. Our objective is to show that the Millian concept of freedom is balanced between the individuality’s cultivation, in its widest plurality, and the moral development of the society

The development of cracks in concrete structures is one of the significant issues with maintaining high strength after hardening. One way to prevent and control this problem is to use fibers. This paper investigates concrete containing electric arc furnace slag aggregates reinforced with fibers. The fibers used in this study are steel fibers and three kinds of polypropylene fibers; polyolefin fibers (modified polypropylene), polypropylene homopolymer, and high-toughness polypropylene. By checking the compressive and flexural strength of concretes made with fibers, it can be seen that the best results at 28 days are found for concrete with steel fibers, namely 62 MPa with 0.9% of fibers. On the contrary, the lowest values are for concrete containing polyolefin fibers, 51 MPa, and the same percentage of fibers. Additionally, under flexural strength testing, at the age of 28 days, the strength of these samples with 0.9% of fibers was 9.54 MPa, a value that is comparable to test concrete with the same percentage of steel fibers, 10.67 MPa, despite the low workability of concrete containing polyolefin fibers with a slump of 25 mm. Moreover, the boundary transition area analysis shows that the excellent connection between the fibers and cement paste near the siderurgical aggregate has caused no cracks in this area. In contrast, cracks can be observed in critical areas near the natural aggregates

With the depletion of natural resources, it is essential to use recycled materials and industrial wastes to adapt the expanding building sector to the environment. Slag from electric arc furnaces is one example that can be used as a siderurgical aggregate in concrete production. Studying the interfacial transition zone between the aggregate and the binder is necessary because the reaction between the aggregate and the binder can significantly impact the concrete's microstructure and mechanical properties. In order to examine any concrete sample with any physical or chemical structure, this study introduces the instruments used to conduct these studies and the methods for preparing concrete samples for the desired area. The results show that solvent exchange with Ethanol is the best method for draining water from the inner surface of the sample in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) with minimal destruction. Also, the kind of sample and its information determine the type of coating that should be applied. Gold is the best choice to examine the topography of the sample surface because it has a higher electron return coefficient than other elements and produces images of higher quality. The epoxy with a viscosity of 550 cP (20 °C) or 150 cP (50 °C), a maximum curing temperature of 50 °C, a curing time of 8 h, and an epoxy-to-hardener ratio of 25 to 3 g is the best configuration for having the best sample for microanalysis

Background: "Classical" echocardiographic signs of Fabry cardiomyopathy (FC), such as left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), posterolateral strain impairment (PLSI), and papillary muscle hypertrophy may be of limited diagnostic accuracy in clinical practice. Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic value of left atrial (LA) strain impairment compared to "classical" echocardiographic findings to discriminate FC. Methods: In standard echocardiographic assessments, we retrospectively analyzed the diagnostic value of the "classical" red flags of FC as well as LA strain in 20 FC patients and in 20 subjects with other causes of LVH. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to assess the respective diagnostic accuracy. Results: FC was confirmed in 20 patients by genetic testing. In the LVH group, 12 patients were classified by biopsy to have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, two had hypertensive heart disease, and six LVH combined with borderline myocarditis. Global and regional left ventricular (LV) strain was not significantly different between groups while LA strain was significantly impaired in FC (Left atrial reservoir strain (LASr) 19.1%±8.4 in FC and 25.6%±8.9 in LVH, p = 0.009; left atrial conduction strain (LAScd) -8.4%±4.9 in FC and -15.9%±8.4 in LVH, p < 0.01). LAScd, with an area under the curve (AUC) of .81 (95% confidence interval [CI] .66-.96) showed the highest diagnostic accuracy to discriminate FC. The PLSI pattern showed an AUC of .49, quantification of papillary muscle hypertrophy an AUC of .47. Conclusion: Adding LA strain analysis to a comprehensive echocardiographic work-up of unclear LVH may be helpful to identify FC as a possible cause

Combination of sleep duration, TV time and body mass index is associated with cardiometabolic risk moderated by age in youth

The combination of sleep duration, television (TV) time and body mass index (BMI) may be related to the alteration of cardiometabolic risk. However, there are few studies that use these variables grouped, and showing the moderating role of age. This study aimed to verify if the combination of sleep duration, TV time and BMI is associated with cardiometabolic risk and the moderating role of age in this relationship in youth. Methods Cross-sectional study conducted with 1411 adolescents (611 male), aged 10–17 years. Sleep duration, TV time and BMI were assessed and grouped into eight categories. Cardiometabolic risk was assessed by a continuous metabolic risk score, including the following variables: low HDL-cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, dysglycemia, high systolic blood pressure, high waist circumference and low cardiorespiratory fitness. Generalized linear models were used to test moderation of age in the relationship between the eight categories of sleep duration/television time/BMI with cardiometabolic risk. Results Cardiometabolic risk factor showed association with all overweight or obesity independent of sleep time and TV time. Age moderated the relationship between sleep duration/television time/BMI with cardiometabolic risk. This association was stronger in younger adolescents (11 and 13 years), indicating that individuals with inadequate sleep, prolonged TV time and overweight/obesity present higher cardiometabolic risk values when compared to 15-year-old adolescents. Conclusion Overweight/obesity, independently of sleep duration and TV time, is the main risk factor for cardiometabolic disorders in adolescence. When moderated by age, younger adolescents that presented the combination of risk factors had higher cardiometabolic risk
