 & Mackintosh, 1997) and cue redundancy (OKeefe and Conway, 1978) be
 reconciled within the framework provided by an error-correcting,
 connectionist account of spatial navigation? I show that an implementation
 of McLarens (1995) better beta model can serve this purpose, and examine
 some of the implications for spatial learning and memory

    Attention and perceptual learning

    Perceptual learning as a phenomenon. We are all of us experts. Each one of us is able to effortlessly distinguish between a large number of people that we encounter in our everyday lives. When considered as stimuli in the abstract this is a difficult discrimination task as the stimuli are all rather similar to one another, yet we can identify an individual in a moment with an accuracy that would put a supercomputer to shame. We will argue that this particular expertise comes about because we are very experienced with the class of stimuli in question (in this case faces), and that it is simply a more commonplace example of a type of expertise that we can study in twitchers (experts in the identification of birds), field botanists (experts in plant identification in a particular habitat) and dog show judges (experts in fine discriminations betweens dogs drawn from the same class such as gundogs; as reported in Perceptual learning, in its broadest sense, can be understood to be any enhancement of learning to a stimulus as a consequence of experience with that stimulus. Thus the proposal would be that perceptual learning is a consequence of the allocation of attention based on past experience with a particular stimulus type. This assertion is a natural (and plausible) response to the data, but is it the correct line to take? The question addressed in this chapter is whether perceptual learning phenomena can be explained by appealing to mechanisms that control attention (we will conclude that in some cases they can) or whether there is a need to appeal to other mechanisms as well (we hope to show that there is!). Starting with some examples of what might be considered perceptual learning phenomena taken from our early work, we go on to discuss them in the context of current research on perceptual learning, with an emphasis on analysing the possible role that attention might play in producing these effects. We will focus on perceptual learning in humans, but will allow ourselves to appeal to evidence from infra-human studies where appropriate.     This paper provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci's ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci's ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The essay concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci's concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author's view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.peer-reviewe

    Newell & Shanks (N&S) argue against the idea that any significant role for unconscious influences on decision making has been established by research to date. Inasmuch as this conclusion applies to the idea of an "intelligent cognitive unconscious," we would agree. Our concern is that the article could lead the unwary to conclude that there are no unconscious influences on decision making - and never could be. We give reasons why this may not be the case

    The rescaled range statistical analysis (R/S) is proposed as a new method to detect correlations in pseudorandom number generators used in Monte Carlo simulations. In an extensive test it is demonstrated that the RS analysis provides a very sensitive method to reveal hidden long run and short run correlations. Several widely used and also some recently proposed pseudorandom number generators are subjected to this test.     The impact of intellectual disabilities on elite sports performance

    Athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID) were re-introduced into the Paralympics in London 2012. As part of this development a classification system had to be established evidencing the impact this impairment has on elite sports performance. This review examines the research behind this issue. Firstly it examines the limited literature comparing the standards reached by top-level athletes with ID with those without disabilities, and then moves on to look at the research demonstrating differences in both the cognitive and physical skills needed for elite performance. The article then reviews the factors that may be implicated to account for this disparity, from a range of perspectives. A case is made for the importance of looking at this area in terms of the potential for the transferability of research findings from this group to talent identification in mainstream athletes and the benefits of integrating neuropsychological concepts and approaches to understanding the cognitive components behind the development of particular skills associated with high-level performance in specific sports

    Who is really in charge of contemporary education? People and technologies in, against and beyond the neoliberal university

    This article reflects on the position of people in, against and beyond information and communication technologies. Firstly, using Jandrić and Kuzmanić’s work on digital postcolonialism, Raymond Williams's work on residual and emergent cultures, and Deleuze and Guattari's insights into the dynamics between territorialization, de-territorialization and re-territorialization, it develops a theoretical framework for inquiry into the hybrid identity of the contemporary university. Then, through critical discourse analysis (CDA), the article moves on to analyse the ways in which technology discourse resides in the dominating ideology of technological determinism and co-opts with neoliberal agendas by omitting humans from explicit mention in UK policy documents. It shows that true counter-hegemonic practice against dominating social practices is possible only through reinvigorating the central position of human beings in regards to information and communication technologies. Within the developed theoretical framework, it seeks openings to intervene subversively into current relationships between technologies, people, and (higher) education, and to identify opportunities for building a non-determinist identity of the contemporary university that reaches beyond the single-minded logic of techno-scientific development. In the process, it situates Paulo Freire's insights into critical pedagogy in the context of the network society, and places the relationships between human beings, language and information and communication technologies amongst central questions of today's (higher) education and society at large

    Clinical Outcomes and Survival Following Treatment of Metastatic Castrate-Refractory Prostate Cancer With Docetaxel Alone or With Strontium-89, Zoledronic Acid, or Both

    Importance Bony metastatic castrate-refractory prostate cancer (CRPC) has a poor prognosis and high morbidity. Zoledronic acid (ZA) is commonly combined with docetaxel in practice but lacks evidence that combining is effective, and strontium-89 (Sr89) is generally used palliatively in patients unfit for chemotherapy. Phase 2 analysis of the TRAPEZE trial confirmed combining the agents was safe and feasible, and the objectives of phase 3 include assessment of the treatments on survival. Objective To determine clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of combining docetaxel, ZA, and Sr89, all having palliative benefits and used in bony metastatic CRPC to control bone symptoms and, for docetaxel, to prolong survival. Design, Setting, and Participants The TRAPEZE trial is a 2 × 2 factorial trial comparing docetaxel alone or with ZA, Sr89, or both. A cohort of 757 participants were recruited between February 2005 and February 2012 from hospitals in the United Kingdom. Overall, 169 participants (45%) had received palliative radiotherapy, and the median (IQR) prostate-specific antigen level was 146 (51-354). Follow-ups were performed for at least 12 months. Interventions Up to 10 cycles of docetaxel alone; docetaxel with ZA; docetaxel with a single Sr89 dose after 6 cycles; or docetaxel with both ZA and Sr89. Main Outcomes and Measures Primary outcomes included clinical progression-free survival (CPFS) (pain progression, skeletal-related events [SREs], or death) and cost-effectiveness. Secondary outcomes included SRE-free interval, pain progression–free interval, total SREs, and overall survival (OS). Results Overall, of 757 participants, 349 (46%) completed docetaxel treatment. Median (IQR) age was 68 (63-73) years. Clinical progression-free survival did not reach statistical significance for either Sr89 or ZA. Cox regression analysis adjusted for all stratification variables showed benefit of Sr89 on CPFS (hazard ratio [HR], 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73-0.99; P = .03) and confirmed no effect of ZA (HR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.85-1.14; P = .81); ZA had a significant effect on SRE-free interval (HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.65-0.95; P = .01). For OS, there was no effect of either Sr89 (HR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.79-1.08; P = 0.34) or ZA (HR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.84-1.16; P = 0.91). Conclusions and Relevance Strontium-89 combined with docetaxel improved CPFS but did not improve OS, SRE-free interval, or total SREs; ZA did not improve CPFS or OS but did significantly improve median SRE-free interval and reduced total SREs by around one-third, suggesting a role as postchemotherapy maintenance therapy
