    Calculation of transition probabilities and ac Stark shifts in two-photon laser transitions of antiprotonic helium

    Numerical ab initio variational calculations of the transition probabilities and ac Stark shifts in two-photon transitions of antiprotonic helium atoms driven by two counter-propagating laser beams are presented. We found that sub-Doppler spectroscopy is in principle possible by exciting transitions of the type (n,L)->(n-2,L-2) between antiprotonic states of principal and angular momentum quantum numbers n~L-1~35, first by using highly monochromatic, nanosecond laser beams of intensities 10^4-10^5 W/cm^2, and then by tuning the virtual intermediate state close (e.g., within 10-20 GHz) to the real state (n-1,L-1) to enhance the nonlinear transition probability. We expect that ac Stark shifts of a few MHz or more will become an important source of systematic error at fractional precisions of better than a few parts in 10^9. These shifts can in principle be minimized and even canceled by selecting an optimum combination of laser intensities and frequencies. We simulated the resonance profiles of some two-photon transitions in the regions n=30-40 of the \bar{p}^4He^+ and \bar{p} ^3He^+ isotopes to find the best conditions that would allow this.Comment: 18 pages 2 tables 12 figures, submitted to Phys.     Low Metal Loading (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd) Photo‐Catalysts Supported on TiO2 for Renewable Processes

    Photo‐catalysts based on titanium dioxide, and modified with highly dispersed metallic nanoparticles of Au, Ag, Pd and Pt, either mono‐ or bi‐metallic, have been analyzed by multiple characterization techniques, including XRD, XPS, SEM, EDX, UV‐Vis and N2 adsorption/desorption. Mono‐metallic photo‐catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation, while bi‐metallic photocatalysts were obtained via deposition‐precipitation (DP). The relationship between the physico‐chemical properties and the catalyst’s behavior for various photo‐synthetic processes, such as carbon dioxide photo‐reduction to liquid products and glucose photo‐reforming to hydrogen have been investigated. Among the tested materials, the catalysts containing platinum alone (i.e., 0.1 mol% Pt/TiO2) or bi‐metallic gold‐containing materials (e.g., 1 wt% (AuxAgy)/TiO2 and 1 wt% (AuxPtz)/TiO2) showed the highest activity, presenting the best results in terms of productivity and conversion for both applications. The textural, structural and morphological properties of the different samples being very similar, the main parameters to improve performance were function of the metal as electron sink, together with optoelectronic properties. The high activity in both applications was related to the low band gap, that allows harvesting more energy from a polychromatic light source with respect to the bare TiO2. Overall, high selectivity and productivity were achieved with respect to most literature data

    Do audio-visual motion cues promote segregation of auditory streams?

    An audio-visual experiment using moving sound sources was designed to investigate whether the analysis of auditory scenes is modulated by synchronous presentation of visual information. Listeners were presented with an alternating sequence of two pure tones delivered by two separate sound sources. In different conditions, the two sound sources were either stationary or moving on random trajectories around the listener. Both the sounds and the movement trajectories were derived from recordings in which two humans were moving with loudspeakers attached to their heads. Visualized movement trajectories modeled by a computer animation were presented together with the sounds. In the main experiment, behavioral reports on sound organization were collected from young healthy volunteers. The proportion and stability of the different sound organizations were compared between the conditions in which the visualized trajectories matched the movement of the sound sources and when the two were independent of each other. The results corroborate earlier findings that separation of sound sources in space promotes segregation. However, no additional effect of auditory movement per se on the perceptual organization of sounds was obtained. Surprisingly, the presentation of movement-congruent visual cues did not strengthen the effects of spatial separation on segregating auditory streams. Our findings are consistent with the view that bistability in the auditory modality can occur independently from other modalities

    Bringing existential variables in answer set programming and bringing non-monotony in existential rules: two sides of the same coin

    This article deals with the combination of ontologies and rules by means of existential rules and answer set programming. Existential rules have been proposed for representing ontological knowledge, specifically in the context of Ontology- Based Data Access. Furthermore Answer Set Programming (ASP) is an appropriate formalism to represent various problems issued from Artificial Intelligence and arising when available information is incomplete. The combination of the two formalisms requires to extend existential rules with nonmonotonic negation and to extend ASP with existential variables. In this article, we present the syntax and semantics of Existential Non Monotonic Rules (ENM-rules) using skolemization which join together the two frameworks. We formalize its links with standard ASP. Moreover, since entailment with existential rules is undecidable, we present conditions that ensure the termination of a breadth-first forward chaining algorithm known as the chase and we discuss extension of these results in the nonmonotonic case

    Wavepacket reconstruction via local dynamics in a parabolic lattice

    We study the dynamics of a wavepacket in a potential formed by the sum of a periodic lattice and of a parabolic potential. The dynamics of the wavepacket is essentially a superposition of ``local Bloch oscillations'', whose frequency is proportional to the local slope of the parabolic potential. We show that the amplitude and the phase of the Fourier transform of a signal characterizing this dynamics contains information about the amplitude and the phase of the wavepacket at a given lattice site. Hence, {\em complete} reconstruction of the the wavepacket in the real space can be performed from the study of the dynamics of the system.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTex

    Optical frequency measurement of the 1S-3S two-photon transition in hydrogen

    This article reports the first optical frequency measurement of the 1S3S1\mathrm{S}-3\mathrm{S} transition in hydrogen. The excitation of this transition occurs at a wavelength of 205 nm which is obtained with two frequency doubling stages of a titanium sapphire laser at 820 nm. Its frequency is measured with an optical frequency comb. The second-order Doppler effect is evaluated from the observation of the motional Stark effect due to a transverse magnetic field perpendicular to the atomic beam. The measured value of the 1S1/2(F=1)3S1/2(F=1)1\mathrm{S}_{1/2}(F=1)-3\mathrm{S}_{1/2}(F=1) frequency splitting is 2922742936.729(13)MHz2 922 742 936.729 (13) \mathrm{MHz} with a relative uncertainty of 4.5×10124.5\times10^{-12}. After the measurement of the 1S2S1\mathrm{S}-2\mathrm{S} frequency, this result is the most precise of the optical frequencies in hydrogen

    Nonsupervised Ranking of Different Segmentation Approaches: Application to the Estimation of the Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction From Cardiac Cine MRI Sequences

    International audienceA statistical methodology is proposed to rank several estimation methods of a relevant clinical parameter when no gold standard is available. Based on a regression without truth method, the proposed approach was applied to rank eightmethods without using any a priori information regarding the reliability of each method and its degree of automation. It was only based on a prior concerning the statistical distribution of the parameter of interest in the database. The ranking of the methods relies on figures of merit derived from the regression and computed using a bootstrap process. The methodology was applied to the estimation of the left ventricular ejection fraction derived from cardiac magnetic resonance images segmented using eight approaches with different degrees of automation: three segmentations were entirely manually performed and the others were variously automated. The ranking of methods was consistent with the expected performance of the estimation methods: the most accurate estimates of the ejection fraction were obtained using manual segmentations. The robustness of the ranking was demonstrated when at least three methods were compared. These results suggest that the proposed statistical approach might be helpful to assess the performance of estimation methods on clinical data for which no gold standard is available

    Physician Attitudes towards Pharmacological Cognitive Enhancement: Safety Concerns Are Paramount

    The ethical dimensions of pharmacological cognitive enhancement have been widely discussed in academic circles and the popular media, but missing from the conversation have been the perspectives of physicians - key decision makers in the adoption of new technologies into medical practice. We queried primary care physicians in major urban centers in Canada and the United States with the aim of understanding their attitudes towards cognitive enhancement. Our primary hypothesis was that physicians would be more comfortable prescribing cognitive enhancers to older patients than to young adults. Physicians were presented with a hypothetical pharmaceutical cognitive enhancer that had been approved by the regulatory authorities for use in healthy adults, and was characterized as being safe, effective, and without significant adverse side effects. Respondents overwhelmingly reported increasing comfort with prescribing cognitive enhancers as the patient age increased from 25 to 65. When asked about their comfort with prescribing extant drugs that might be considered enhancements (sildenafil, modafinil, and methylphenidate) or our hypothetical cognitive enhancer to a normal, healthy 40 year old, physicians were more comfortable prescribing sildenafil than any of the other three agents. When queried as to the reasons they answered as they did, the most prominent concerns physicians expressed were issues of safety that were not offset by the benefit afforded the individual, even in the face of explicit safety claims. Moreover, many physicians indicated that they viewed safety claims with considerable skepticism. It has become routine for safety to be raised and summarily dismissed as an issue in the debate over pharmacological cognitive enhancement; the observation that physicians were so skeptical in the face of explicit safety claims suggests that such a conclusion may be premature. Thus, physician attitudes suggest that greater weight be placed upon the balance between safety and benefit in consideration of pharmacological cognitive enhancement
