    Cosmological energy in a thermo-horizon and the first law

    We consider a cosmological horizon, named thermo-horizon, to which are associated a temperature and an entropy of Bekenstein-Hawking and which obeys the first law for an energy flow calculated through the corresponding limit surface. We point out a contradiction between the first law and the definition of the total energy contained inside the horizon. This contradiction is removed when the first law is replaced by a Gibbs' equation for a vacuum-like component associated to the event horizon

    Precision Monte Carlo Test of the Hartree-Fock Approximation for a trapped Bose Gas

    We compare the semiclassical Hartree-Fock approximation for a trapped Bose gas to a direct Path Integral Quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The chosen parameters correspond to current Rb experiments. We observe corrections to the mean-field density profile. The Path Integral calculation reveals an increase of the number of condensed particles, which is of the same order as a previously computed result for a homogeneous system. We discuss the experimental observability of the effect and propose a method to analyze data of in-situ experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revte

    Phase separation in supersolids

    We study quantum phase transitions in the ground state of the two dimensional hard-core boson Hubbard Hamiltonian. Recent work on this and related models has suggested ``supersolid'' phases with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal long range order. We show numerically that, contrary to the generally held belief, the most commonly discussed ``checkerboard'' supersolid is thermodynamically unstable. Furthermore, this supersolid cannot be stabilized by next near neighbour interaction. We obtain the correct phase diagram using the Maxwell construction. We demonstrate the ``striped'' supersolid is thermodynamically stable and is separated from the superfluid phase by a continuous phase transition.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures, include

    The density dependence of the transition temperature in a homogenous Bose flui

    Transition temperature data obtained as a function of particle density in the 4^4He-Vycor system are compared with recent theoretical calculations for 3D Bose condensed systems. In the low density dilute Bose gas regime we find, in agreement with theory, a positive shift in the transition temperature of the form ΔT/T0=γ(na3)1/3\Delta T/T_0 = \gamma(na^{3})^{1/3}. At higher densities a maximum is found in the ratio of Tc/T0T_c /T_0 for a value of the interaction parameter, na3^3, that is in agreement with path-integral Monte Carlo calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Superfluid Bosons and Flux Liquids: Disorder, Thermal Fluctuations, and Finite-Size Effects

    The influence of different types of disorder (both uncorrelated and correlated) on the superfluid properties of a weakly interacting or dilute Bose gas, as well as on the corresponding quantities for flux line liquids in high-temperature superconductors at low magnetic fields are reviewed, investigated and compared. We exploit the formal analogy between superfluid bosons and the statistical mechanics of directed lines, and explore the influence of the different "imaginary time" boundary conditions appropriate for a flux line liquid. For superfluids, we discuss the density and momentum correlations, the condensate fraction, and the normal-fluid density as function of temperature for two- and three-dimensional systems subject to a space- and time-dependent random potential as well as conventional point-, line-, and plane-like defects. In the case of vortex liquids subject to point disorder, twin boundaries, screw dislocations, and various configurations of columnar damage tracks, we calculate the corresponding quantities, namely density and tilt correlations, the ``boson'' order parameter, and the tilt modulus. The finite-size corrections due to periodic vs. open "imaginary time" boundary conditions differ in interesting and important ways.     Observation of the Shadowing of Cosmic Rays by the Moon using a Deep Underground Detector

    Using data collected by the MACRO experiment during the years 1989-1996, we show evidence for the shadow of the moon in the underground cosmic ray flux with a significance of 3.6 sigma. This detection of the shadowing effect is the first by an underground detector. A maximum-likelihood analysis is used to determine that the angular resolution of the apparatus is 0.9+/-0.3 degrees. These results demonstrate MACRO's capabilities as a muon telescope by confirming its absolute pointing ability and quantifying its angular resolution.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures Submitted to Phys.     A multiscale hybrid model for pro-angiogenic calcium signals in a vascular endothelial cell

    Cytosolic calcium machinery is one of the principal signaling mechanisms by which endothelial cells (ECs) respond to external stimuli during several biological processes, including vascular progression in both physiological and pathological conditions. Low concentrations of angiogenic factors (such as VEGF) activate in fact complex pathways involving, among others, second messengers arachidonic acid (AA) and nitric oxide (NO), which in turn control the activity of plasma membrane calcium channels. The subsequent increase in the intracellular level of the ion regulates fundamental biophysical properties of ECs (such as elasticity, intrinsic motility, and chemical strength), enhancing their migratory capacity. Previously, a number of continuous models have represented cytosolic calcium dynamics, while EC migration in angiogenesis has been separately approached with discrete, lattice-based techniques. These two components are here integrated and interfaced to provide a multiscale and hybrid Cellular Potts Model (CPM), where the phenomenology of a motile EC is realistically mediated by its calcium-dependent subcellular events. The model, based on a realistic 3-D cell morphology with a nuclear and a cytosolic region, is set with known biochemical and electrophysiological data. In particular, the resulting simulations are able to reproduce and describe the polarization process, typical of stimulated vascular cells, in various experimental conditions.Moreover, by analyzing the mutual interactions between multilevel biochemical and biomechanical aspects, our study investigates ways to inhibit cell migration: such strategies have in fact the potential to result in pharmacological interventions useful to disrupt malignant vascular progressio

    Memory-guided force output is associated with self-reported ADHD symptoms in young adults

    Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorder in childhood and persists into adulthood in up to 65 % of cases. ADHD is associated with adverse outcomes such as the ability to gain and maintain employment and is associated with an increased risk for substance abuse obesity workplace injuries and traffic accidents A majority of diagnosed children have motor deficits; however, few studies have examined motor deficits in young adults. This study provides a novel examination of visuomotor control of grip force in young adults with and without ADHD. Participants were instructed to maintain force production over a 20-second trial with and without real-time visual feedback about their performance. The results demonstrated that when visual feedback was available, adults with ADHD produced slightly higher grip force than controls. However, when visual feedback was removed, adults with ADHD had a faster rate of decay of force, which was associated with ADHD symptom severity and trait impulsivity. These findings suggest that there may be important differences in the way that adults with ADHD integrate visual feedback during continuous motor tasks. These may account for some of the motor impairments reported in children with ADHD. These deficits could result from (1) dysfunctional sensory motor integration and/or (2) deficits in short-term visuomotor memory

    Correlated Mutations: A Hallmark of Phenotypic Amino Acid Substitutions

    Point mutations resulting in the substitution of a single amino acid can cause severe functional consequences, but can also be completely harmless. Understanding what determines the phenotypical impact is important both for planning targeted mutation experiments in the laboratory and for analyzing naturally occurring mutations found in patients. Common wisdom suggests using the extent of evolutionary conservation of a residue or a sequence motif as an indicator of its functional importance and thus vulnerability in case of mutation. In this work, we put forward the hypothesis that in addition to conservation, co-evolution of residues in a protein influences the likelihood of a residue to be functionally important and thus associated with disease. While the basic idea of a relation between co-evolution and functional sites has been explored before, we have conducted the first systematic and comprehensive analysis of point mutations causing disease in humans with respect to correlated mutations. We included 14,211 distinct positions with known disease-causing point mutations in 1,153 human proteins in our analysis. Our data show that (1) correlated positions are significantly more likely to be disease-associated than expected by chance, and that (2) this signal cannot be explained by conservation patterns of individual sequence positions. Although correlated residues have primarily been used to predict contact sites, our data are in agreement with previous observations that (3) many such correlations do not relate to physical contacts between amino acid residues.
