    Sets of visible points

    We say that two lattice points are visible from one another if there is no lattice point on the open line segment joining them. If Q is a subset of the n-dimensional integer lattice L^n, we write VQ for the set of points which can see every point of Q, and we call a set S a set of visible points if S = VQ for some set Q. In the first section we study the elementary properties of the operator V and of certain associated operators. A typical result is that Q is a set of visible points if and only if Q = V(VQ). In the second and third sections we study sets of visible points in greater detail. In particular we show that if Q is a finite subset of L^n, then VQ has a "density" which is given by the Euler product ^Ο€_p (1 – r_p(Q)/p_n) where the numbers r_p (Q) are certain integers determined by the set Q and the primes p. And if Q is an infinite subset of L^ n, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the set Q such that VQ has a density which is given by this or other related products. In the final section we compute the average values of a certain class of functions defined on L^n, and we show that the resulting formula may be used to compute the density of a set of visible points VQ generated by a finite set Q

    Separated flow

    A brief overview of flow separation phenomena is provided. Langley has many active research programs in flow separation related areas. Three cases are presented which describe specific examples of flow separation research. In each example, a description of the fundamental fluid physics and the complexity of the flow field is presented along with a method of either reducing or controlling the extent of separation. The following examples are discussed: flow over a smooth surface with an adverse pressure gradient; flow over a surface with a geometric discontinuity; and flow with shock-boundary layer interactions. These results will show that improvements are being made in the understanding of flow separation and its control

    Measuring the impacts of the national flood insurance program

    The National Flood Insurance Program was established in 1968 as a federally administered insurance program to reduce costs to the federal government for flood recovery and allocate recovery costs among potential disaster relief beneficiaries. Participants purchase flood insurance through participating property insurance providers which receive a haircut of the premium for overhead costs and passes the remainder to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This paper outlines a model to measure the net social benefits attributable to the insurance component of the NFIP. Development of this model provides the baseline for further economic and social analysis of the NFIP

    Sound to Language: Different Cortical Processing for First and Second Languages in Elementary School Children as Revealed by a Large-Scale Study Using fNIRS

    A large-scale study of 484 elementary school children (6–10 years) performing word repetition tasks in their native language (L1-Japanese) and a second language (L2-English) was conducted using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Three factors presumably associated with cortical activation, language (L1/L2), word frequency (high/low), and hemisphere (left/right), were investigated. L1 words elicited significantly greater brain activation than L2 words, regardless of semantic knowledge, particularly in the superior/middle temporal and inferior parietal regions (angular/supramarginal gyri). The greater L1-elicited activation in these regions suggests that they are phonological loci, reflecting processes tuned to the phonology of the native language, while phonologically unfamiliar L2 words were processed like nonword auditory stimuli. The activation was bilateral in the auditory and superior/middle temporal regions. Hemispheric asymmetry was observed in the inferior frontal region (right dominant), and in the inferior parietal region with interactions: low-frequency words elicited more right-hemispheric activation (particularly in the supramarginal gyrus), while high-frequency words elicited more left-hemispheric activation (particularly in the angular gyrus). The present results reveal the strong involvement of a bilateral language network in children’s brains depending more on right-hemispheric processing while acquiring unfamiliar/low-frequency words. A right-to-left shift in laterality should occur in the inferior parietal region, as lexical knowledge increases irrespective of language

    The benefit of directly comparing autism and schizophrenia for revealing mechanisms of social cognitive impairment

    Autism and schizophrenia share a history of diagnostic conflation that was not definitively resolved until the publication of the DSM-III in 1980. Though now recognized as heterogeneous disorders with distinct developmental trajectories and dissociative features, much of the early nosological confusion stemmed from apparent overlap in certain areas of social dysfunction. In more recent years, separate but substantial literatures have accumulated for autism and schizophrenia demonstrating that abnormalities in social cognition directly contribute to the characteristic social deficits of both disorders. The current paper argues that direct comparison of social cognitive impairment can highlight shared and divergent mechanisms underlying pathways to social dysfunction, a process that can provide significant clinical benefit by informing the development of tailored treatment efforts. Thus, while the history of diagnostic conflation between autism and schizophrenia may have originated in similarities in social dysfunction, the goal of direct comparisons is not to conflate them once again but rather to reveal distinctions that illuminate disorder-specific mechanisms and pathways that contribute to social cognitive impairment
