    5G RAN slicing provides a way to split network infrastructure into self-contained slices which can have various virtual network functions (VNFs) mapped onto them. Much work has gone into creating robust mapping and resource allocation algorithms in order to efficiently embed VNFs onto the available nodes in a slice. However, in order to most efficiently embed these VNFs we need to understand the resource and bandwidth needs of the services we are trying to embed. This project seeks to provide an accurate assessment of the needs of three commonly used network services. We do this by testing each network service using real world physical machines on the POWDER network testbed. We collect bandwidth and CPU usage data from each test and use it to analyze the needs of the network service when being embedded onto physical nodes during network slicing

    Tris-ureas as transmembrane anion transporters

    Nine tris-urea receptors (L1–L9) have been synthesised and shown to coordinate to a range of anionic guests both by 1H NMR titration techniques and single crystal X-ray structural analysis. The compounds have been shown to be capable of mediating the exchange of chloride and nitrate and also chloride and bicarbonate across POPC or POPC : cholesterol 7 : 3 vesicle bilayer membranes at low transporter loadings. An interesting dependency of anion transport on the nature of the cation is evidence to suggest that a M+/Cl− cotransport process may also contribute to the release of chloride from the vesicles

    As we move towards the era of ELTs, it is timely to think about the future role of the 8-m class telescopes. Under the OPTICON programme, novel technologies have been developed that are intended for use in multi-object and integral-field spectrographs.     ZEN2: A narrow J-band search for z~9 Lya emitting galaxies directed towards three lensing clusters

    We present the results of a continuing survey to detect Lya emitting galaxies at redshifts z~9: the ZEN ("z equals nine'') survey. We have obtained deep VLT/ISAAC observations in the narrow J-band filter NB119 directed towards three massive lensing clusters: Abell clusters 1689, 1835, and 114. The foreground clusters provide a magnified view of the distant universe and permit a sensitive test for the presence of very high-redshift galaxies. We search for z~9 Lya emitting galaxies displaying a significant narrow-band excess relative to accompanying J-band observations that remain undetected in HST/ACS optical images of each field. No sources consistent with this criterion are detected above the unlensed 90% point-source flux limit of the narrow-band image, F_NB=3.7e-18 ergs/s/cm2. To date, the total coverage of the ZEN survey has sampled a volume at z~9 of approximately 1700 co-moving Mpc3 to a Lya emission luminosity of 1e43 erg/s.     Facilitating return to work through early specialist health-based interventions (FRESH): protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial

    Background Over one million people sustain traumatic brain injury each year in the UK and more than 10 % of these are moderate or severe injuries, resulting in cognitive and psychological problems that affect the ability to work. Returning to work is a primary rehabilitation goal but fewer than half of traumatic brain injury survivors achieve this. Work is a recognised health service outcome, yet UK service provision varies widely and there is little robust evidence to inform rehabilitation practice. A single-centre cohort comparison suggested better work outcomes may be achieved through early occupational therapy targeted at job retention. This study aims to determine whether this intervention can be delivered in three new trauma centres and to conduct a feasibility, randomised controlled trial to determine whether its effects and cost effectiveness can be measured to inform a definitive trial. Methods/design Mixed methods study, including feasibility randomised controlled trial, embedded qualitative studies and feasibility economic evaluation will recruit 102 people with traumatic brain injury and their nominated carers from three English UK National Health Service (NHS) trauma centres. Participants will be randomised to receive either usual NHS rehabilitation or usual rehabilitation plus early specialist traumatic brain injury vocational rehabilitation delivered by an occupational therapist. The primary objective is to assess the feasibility of conducting a definitive trial; secondary objectives include measurement of protocol integrity (inclusion/exclusion criteria, intervention adherence, reasons for non-adherence) recruitment rate, the proportion of eligible patients recruited, reasons for non-recruitment, spectrum of TBI severity, proportion of and reasons for loss to follow-up, completeness of data collection, gains in face-to-face Vs postal data collection and the most appropriate methods of measuring primary outcomes (return to work, retention) to determine the sample size for a larger trial. Discussion To our knowledge, this is the first feasibility randomised controlled trial of a vocational rehabilitation health intervention specific to traumatic brain injury.     Capturing egocentric biases in reference reuse during collaborative dialogue

    Words that are produced aloud—and especially self-produced ones—are remembered better than words that are not, a phenomenon labeled the production effect in the field of memory research. Two experiments were conducted to determine whether this effect can be generalized to dialogue, and how it might affect dialogue management. Triads (Exp. 1) or dyads (Exp. 2) of participants interacted to perform a collaborative task. Analyzing reference reuse during the interaction revealed that the participants were more likely to reuse the references that they had presented themselves, on the one hand, and those that had been accepted through verbatim repetition, on the other. Analyzing reference recall suggested that the greater accessibility of self-presented references was only transient. Moreover, among partner-presented references, those discussed while the participant had actively taken part in the conversation were more likely to be recalled than those discussed while the participant had been inactive. These results contribute to a better understanding of how individual memory processes might contribute to collaborative dialogue

    Coordinated optimization of visual cortical maps (I) Symmetry-based analysis

    In the primary visual cortex of primates and carnivores, functional architecture can be characterized by maps of various stimulus features such as orientation preference (OP), ocular dominance (OD), and spatial frequency. It is a long-standing question in theoretical neuroscience whether the observed maps should be interpreted as optima of a specific energy functional that summarizes the design principles of cortical functional architecture. A rigorous evaluation of this optimization hypothesis is particularly demanded by recent evidence that the functional architecture of OP columns precisely follows species invariant quantitative laws. Because it would be desirable to infer the form of such an optimization principle from the biological data, the optimization approach to explain cortical functional architecture raises the following questions: i) What are the genuine ground states of candidate energy functionals and how can they be calculated with precision and rigor? ii) How do differences in candidate optimization principles impact on the predicted map structure and conversely what can be learned about an hypothetical underlying optimization principle from observations on map structure? iii) Is there a way to analyze the coordinated organization of cortical maps predicted by optimization principles in general? To answer these questions we developed a general dynamical systems approach to the combined optimization of visual cortical maps of OP and another scalar feature such as OD or spatial frequency preference.Comment: 90 pages, 16 figure

    The scale of population structure in Arabidopsis thaliana

    The population structure of an organism reflects its evolutionary history and influences its evolutionary trajectory. It constrains the combination of genetic diversity and reveals patterns of past gene flow. Understanding it is a prerequisite for detecting genomic regions under selection, predicting the effect of population disturbances, or modeling gene flow. This paper examines the detailed global population structure of Arabidopsis thaliana. Using a set of 5,707 plants collected from around the globe and genotyped at 149 SNPs, we show that while A. thaliana as a species self-fertilizes 97% of the time, there is considerable variation among local groups. This level of outcrossing greatly limits observed heterozygosity but is sufficient to generate considerable local haplotypic diversity. We also find that in its native Eurasian range A. thaliana exhibits continuous isolation by distance at every geographic scale without natural breaks corresponding to classical notions of populations. By contrast, in North America, where it exists as an exotic species, A. thaliana exhibits little or no population structure at a continental scale but local isolation by distance that extends hundreds of km. This suggests a pattern for the development of isolation by distance that can establish itself shortly after an organism fills a new habitat range. It also raises questions about the general applicability of many standard population genetics models. Any model based on discrete clusters of interchangeable individuals will be an uneasy fit to organisms like A. thaliana which exhibit continuous isolation by distance on many scales

    Molecular understanding of the serum antibody repertoires after seasonal influenza vaccination among different age cohorts

    Numerous influenza vaccination studies based on bulk serology have indicated that the antibody responses to the vaccine markedly decrease in the elderly. However, whether such decline results from the changes in the overall quantity or the quality of the circulating antibodies in serum remains unknown. Utilizing novel antibody repertoire profiling technologies, combining tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and high-throughput sequencing, we investigated the influenza-specific serological repertoires of 10 donors ranging from 26 to 70 years old vaccinated with Fluzone® 2013-2014 and/or 2014-2015. In particular, we determined the serum antibodies that are specific to the H1 or H3 component of the vaccine or cross-reactive between the two (H1+H3) and examined their relative quantitative distributions. Our data indicate that the proportion of H1+H3 antibodies significantly increases in the elderly and that the somatic hypermutation rates of the influenza-specific antibodies are higher in the elderly. These results suggest that the repeated exposure to the different virus subtypes could have led to the prolonged selection of H1+H3 antibodies targeting highly conserved epitopes. To evaluate the potency of the antibodies circulating in different age groups, we recombinantly expressed a number of representative monoclonal antibodies isolated from the donors in different age groups for further characterizations. Overall, our analysis suggests that the influenza-specific repertoire in the elderly may converge toward shared epitopes but the quality of the antibodies can be superior in terms of cross-reactivity. However, because the antibody repertoire “shrinks” as we age while targeting more conserved epitopes across different influenza subtypes, it is possible that the elderly is particularly susceptible to significantly altered strains. Collectively, profiling vaccine induced serological repertoires among different age cohorts can provide unprecedented insights regarding humoral immunity associated with age and a potential explanation for the vulnerability of the elderly
