    An Enhanced Spectroscopic Census of the Orion Nebula Cluster

    We report new spectral types or spectral classification constraints for over 600 stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) based on medium resolution R~ 1500-2000 red optical spectra acquired using the Palomar 200" and Kitt Peak 3.5m telescopes. Spectral types were initially estimated for F, G, and early K stars from atomic line indices while for late K and M stars, constituting the majority of our sample, indices involving TiO and VO bands were used. To ensure proper classification, particularly for reddened, veiled, or nebula-contaminated stars, all spectra were then visually examined for type verification or refinement. We provide an updated spectral type table that supersedes Hillenbrand (1997), increasing the percentage of optically visible ONC stars with spectral type information from 68% to 90%. However, for many objects, repeated observations have failed to yield spectral types primarily due to the challenges of adequate sky subtraction against a bright and spatially variable nebular background. The scatter between our new and our previously determined spectral types is approximately 2 spectral sub-classes. We also compare our grating spectroscopy results with classification based on narrow-band TiO filter photometry from Da Rio et al. (2012, finding similar scatter. While the challenges of working in the ONC may explain much of the spread, we highlight several stars showing significant and unexplained bona fide spectral variations in observations taken several years apart; these and similar cases could be due to a combination of accretion and extinction changes.     CLASH-X: A Comparison of Lensing and X-ray Techniques for Measuring the Mass Profiles of Galaxy Clusters

    We present profiles of temperature (Tx), gas mass, and hydrostatic mass estimated from new and archival X-ray observations of CLASH clusters. We compare measurements derived from XMM and Chandra observations with one another and compare both to gravitational lensing mass profiles derived with CLASH HST and ground-based lensing data. Radial profiles of Chandra and XMM electron density and enclosed gas mass are nearly identical, indicating that differences in hydrostatic masses inferred from X-ray observations arise from differences in Tx measurements. Encouragingly, cluster Txs are consistent with one another at ~100-200 kpc radii but XMM Tx systematically decline relative to Chandra Tx at larger radii. The angular dependence of the discrepancy suggests additional investigation on systematics such as the XMM point spread function correction, vignetting and off-axis responses. We present the CLASH-X mass-profile comparisons in the form of cosmology-independent and redshift-independent circular-velocity profiles. Ratios of Chandra HSE mass profiles to CLASH lensing profiles show no obvious radial dependence in the 0.3-0.8 Mpc range. However, the mean mass biases inferred from the WL and SaWLens data are different. e.g., the weighted-mean value at 0.5 Mpc is = 0.12 for the WL comparison and = -0.11 for the SaWLens comparison. The ratios of XMM HSE mass profiles to CLASH lensing profiles show a pronounced radial dependence in the 0.3-1.0 Mpc range, with a weighted mean mass bias of value rising to ~0.3 at ~1 Mpc for the WL comparison and of 0.25 for SaWLens comparison. The enclosed gas mass profiles from both Chandra and XMM rise to a value 1/8 times the total-mass profiles inferred from lensing at 0.5 Mpc and remain constant outside of that radius, suggesting that [8xMgas] profiles may be an excellent proxy for total-mass profiles at >0.5 Mpc in massive galaxy clusters.Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 24 pages; scheduled to appear in the Oct 10, 2014 issue.     Pahs, Ionized Gas, and Molecular Hydrogen in Brightest Cluster Galaxies of Cool Core Clusters of Galaxies

    We present measurements of 5-25 {\mu}m emission features of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) with strong optical emission lines in a sample of 9 cool-core clusters of galaxies observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. These systems provide a view of dusty molecular gas and star formation, surrounded by dense, X-ray emitting intracluster gas. Past work has shown that BCGs in cool-core clusters may host powerful radio sources, luminous optical emission line systems, and excess UV, while BCGs in other clusters never show this activity. In this sample, we detect polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), extremely luminous, rotationally-excited molecular hydrogen line emission, forbidden line emission from ionized gas ([Ne II] and [Ne III]), and infrared continuum emission from warm dust and cool stars. We show here that these BCGs exhibit more luminous forbidden neon and H2 rotational line emission than star-forming galaxies with similar total infrared luminosities, as well as somewhat higher ratios of 70 {\mu}m / 24 {\mu}m luminosities. Our analysis suggests that while star formation processes dominate the heating of the dust and PAHs, a heating process consistent with suprathermal electron heating from the hot gas, distinct from star formation, is heating the molecular gas and contributing to the heating of the ionized gas in the galaxies. The survival of PAHs and dust suggests that dusty gas is somehow shielded from significant interaction with the X-ray gas.Comment: 27 preprint pages, 18 figures, accepted by Astrophysical Journa

    Infrared and Ultraviolet Star Formation in Brightest Cluster Galaxies in the ACCEPT Sample

    We present IR and UV photometry for a sample of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). The BCGs are from a heterogeneous but uniformly characterized sample, the Archive of Chandra Cluster Entropy Profile Tables (ACCEPT), of X-ray galaxy clusters from the Chandra X-ray telescope archive with published gas temperature, density, and entropy profiles. We use archival GALEX, Spitzer, and 2MASS observations to assemble spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and colors for BCGs. We find that while the SEDs of some BCGs follow the expectation of red, dust-free old stellar populations, many exhibit signatures of recent star formation in the form of excess UV or mid-IR emission, or both. We establish a mean near-UV to 2MASS K color of 6.59 \pm 0.34 for quiescent BCGs. We use this mean color to quantify the UV excess associated with star formation in the active BCGs. We use fits to a template of an evolved stellar population and library of starburst models and mid-IR star formation relations to estimate the obscured star formation rates. Many of the BCGs in X-ray clusters with low central gas entropy exhibit enhanced UV (38%) and mid-IR emission (43%), above that expected from an old stellar population. These excesses are consistent with on-going star formation activity in the BCG, star formation that appears to be enabled by the presence of high density, X-ray emitting gas in the the core of the cluster of galaxies. This hot, X-ray emitting gas may provide the enhanced ambient pressure and some of the fuel to trigger the star formation. This result is consistent with previous works that showed that BCGs in clusters with low central gas entropy host H{\alpha} emission-line nebulae and radio sources, while clusters with high central gas entropy exhibit none of these features. UV and mid-IR measurements combined provide a complete picture of unobscured and obscured star formation occurring in these systems.Comment: 81 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for ApJ

    Single-molecule measurements of (i) an optically trapped bead, (ii) the DNA hairpin 30R50/T4, and (iii) a DNA reference construct lacking the hairpin, all measured with optical tweezers. All data files are formatted as space-delimited text, containing columns or rows of data representing the position of the bead along the reaction axis or the extension of the DNA molecule (all values in nm). Each folder contains data from two types of measurement: (a) files ending in "SampleTrajectory.txt", which contain single columns of data representing a segment of the full trajectory, and (b) files ending in "Fluctuations.txt" or "TransitionPaths.txt," which contain segments of the trajectories corresponding to nonproductive fluctuations or transition paths, respectively (individual fluctuations/transition paths are listed in space-delimited rows). All data were sampled at 1 MHz. For the DNA hairpin and the reference construct, the measurement modality (constant force or high stiffness) is listed in the folder containing the data, and also noted in the filename (as "CF" or "HS", respectively). For the DNA hairpin and the reference construct, the data for each molecule is found within a subfolder containing the molecule number (e.g. "Molecule 1") and an identifier is also included in the filename (e.g. "Mol1").     The Rotary Open Source Autonomous Miniature Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (ROSAMUAV) team is using the Quadtavius quadrotor for the 2012 Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Student Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) Competition. This document details the systems engineering for the development of the Quadtavious Unmanned Aerial System. This unique rotary-wing system is comprised of four parts: the airborne system, the payload system, the ground control station (GCS) and the imaging ground station (IGS). The airborne system is described with its subsystems: airframe and autopilot. The payload system is composed of payload avionics, payload control, and robust automatic target detection algorithms. The GCS includes autonomy supervision, Command and Control (C&C) and real-time response to actionable intelligence. The IGS integrates an autonomous target recognition and the real-time imagery display. These four components work together to create a robust and reliable system, and likely, the most unique of any seen at the AUVSI SUAS competition. Team ROSAM hopes to make history as the first quadrotor to complete the AUVSI SUAS mission. Team ROSAM is confident in their UAS and its ability to safely complete the mission.     The strongest cool core in REXCESS: Missing X-ray cavities in RXC J2014.8-2430

    International audienceWe present a multiwavelength study of RXC J2014.8-2430, the most extreme cool-core cluster in the Representative XMMNewtonXMM-Newton Cluster Structure Survey (REXCESS), using ChandraChandra X-ray, Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), Very Large Array (VLA), and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations. While feedback from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is thought to be the dominant mechanism by which a cooling flow is suppressed, the ChandraChandra imaging observations surprisingly do not reveal the bi-lateral X-ray cavities expected in the intracluster medium (ICM) of an extreme cool core hosting a powerful radio source. We discuss the limits on the presence of any radio bubbles associated with any undetected X-ray cavities. We place upper limits on any significant X-ray AGN in the brightest cluster galaxy, and show that the X-ray peak is offset from the central radio source, which exhibits a steep low frequency radio spectrum indicative of electron ageing. The SOAR data reveal an extended, luminous emission line source. From our narrowband Hα\alpha imaging of the BCG, the central Hα\alpha peak is coincident with the radio observations, yet offset from the X-ray peak, consistent with sloshing found previously in this cluster. ALMA observations reveal a large reservoir of molecular gas that traces the extended Hα\alpha emission. We conclude either that the radio source and its cavities in the X-ray gas are nearly aligned along the line of sight, or that ram pressure induced by sloshing has significantly displaced the cool molecular gas feeding it, perhaps preempting the AGN feedback cycle. We argue that the sloshing near the core is likely subsonic, as expected, given the co-location of the Hα\alpha, CO(1-0), radio continuum, and stellar emission peaks and their proximity to the intact cool core seen in X-ray
