Retention of immobile Se(0) in flow-through aquifer column systems during bioreduction and oxic-remobilization
Selenium (Se) is a toxic contaminant with multiple anthropogenic sources, including Se-79 from nuclear fission. Se mobility in the geosphere is generally governed by its oxidation state, therefore understanding Se speciation under variable redox conditions is important for the safe management of Se contaminated sites. Here, we investigate Se behavior in sediment groundwater column systems. Experiments were conducted with environmentally relevant Se concentrations, using a range of groundwater compositions, and the impact of electron-donor (i.e., biostimulation) and groundwater sulfate addition was examined over a period of 170 days. X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy and standard geochemical techniques were used to track changes in sediment associated Se concentration and speciation. Electron-donor amended systems with and without added sulfate retained up to 90% of added Se(VI)(aq), with sediment associated Se speciation dominated by trigonal Se(0) and possibly trace Se(-II); no Se colloid formation was observed. The remobilization potential of the sediment associated Se species was then tested in reoxidation and seawater intrusion perturbation experiments. In all treatments, sediment associated Se (i.e., trigonal Se(0)) was largely resistant to remobilization over the timescale of the experiments (170 days). However, in the perturbation experiments, less Se was remobilized from sulfidic sediments, suggesting that previous sulfate-reducing conditions may buffer Se against remobilization and migration.Peer reviewe
Visual 3-D SLAM from UAVs
The aim of the paper is to present, test and discuss the implementation of Visual SLAM techniques to images taken from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) outdoors, in partially structured environments. Every issue of the whole process is discussed in order to obtain more accurate localization and mapping from UAVs flights. Firstly, the issues related to the visual features of objects in the scene, their distance to the UAV, and the related image acquisition system and their calibration are evaluated for improving the whole process. Other important, considered issues are related to the image processing techniques, such as interest point detection, the matching procedure and the scaling factor. The whole system has been tested using the COLIBRI mini UAV in partially structured environments. The results that have been obtained for localization, tested against the GPS information of the flights, show that Visual SLAM delivers reliable localization and mapping that makes it suitable for some outdoors applications when flying UAVs
Studying Paths of Participation in Viral Diffusion Process
Authors propose a conceptual model of participation in viral diffusion
process composed of four stages: awareness, infection, engagement and action.
To verify the model it has been applied and studied in the virtual social chat
environment settings. The study investigates the behavioral paths of actions
that reflect the stages of participation in the diffusion and presents
shortcuts, that lead to the final action, i.e. the attendance in a virtual
event. The results show that the participation in each stage of the process
increases the probability of reaching the final action. Nevertheless, the
majority of users involved in the virtual event did not go through each stage
of the process but followed the shortcuts. That suggests that the viral
diffusion process is not necessarily a linear sequence of human actions but
rather a dynamic system.Comment: In proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Social

Atomic-scale perspective on the origin of attractive step interactions on Si(113)
Recent experiments have shown that steps on Si(113) surfaces self-organize
into bunches due to a competition between long-range repulsive and short-range
attractive interactions. Using empirical and tight-binding interatomic
potentials, we investigate the physical origin of the short-range attraction,
and report the formation and interaction energies of steps. We find that the
short-range attraction between steps is due to the annihilation of force
monopoles at their edges as they combine to form bunches. Our results for the
strengths of the attractive interactions are consistent with the values
determined from experimental studies on kinetics of faceting.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev B, Rapid Communication
Vortices and dynamics in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
I review the basic physics of ultracold dilute trapped atomic gases, with
emphasis on Bose-Einstein condensation and quantized vortices. The hydrodynamic
form of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (a nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation)
illuminates the role of the density and the quantum-mechanical phase. One
unique feature of these experimental systems is the opportunity to study the
dynamics of vortices in real time, in contrast to typical experiments on
superfluid He. I discuss three specific examples (precession of single
vortices, motion of vortex dipoles, and Tkachenko oscillations of a vortex
array). Other unusual features include the study of quantum turbulence and the
behavior for rapid rotation, when the vortices form dense regular arrays.
Ultimately, the system is predicted to make a quantum phase transition to
various highly correlated many-body states (analogous to bosonic quantum Hall
states) that are not superfluid and do not have condensate wave functions. At
present, this transition remains elusive. Conceivably, laser-induced synthetic
vector potentials can serve to reach this intriguing phase transition.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Low Temperature Physics,

Stabilization and pumping of giant vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates
Recently, it was shown that giant vortices with arbitrarily large quantum
numbers can possibly be created in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates by
cyclically pumping vorticity into the condensate. However, multiply quantized
vortices are typically dynamically unstable in harmonically trapped nonrotated
condensates, which poses a serious challenge to the vortex pump procedure. In
this theoretical study, we investigate how the giant vortices can be stabilized
by the application of a Gaussian potential peak along the vortex core. We find
that achieving dynamical stability is feasible up to high quantum numbers. To
demonstrate the efficiency of the stabilization method, we simulate the
adiabatic creation of an unsplit 20-quantum vortex with the vortex pump.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; to be published in J. Low Temp. Phys., online

Theoretical study of the absorption spectra of the sodium dimer
Absorption of radiation from the sodium dimer molecular states correlating to
Na(3s)-Na(3s) is investigated theoretically. Vibrational bound and continuum
transitions from the singlet X Sigma-g+ state to the first excited singlet A
Sigma-u+ and singlet B Pi-u states and from the triplet a Sigma-u+ state to the
first excited triplet b Sigma-g+ and triplet c Pi-g states are studied
quantum-mechanically. Theoretical and experimental data are used to
characterize the molecular properties taking advantage of knowledge recently
obtained from ab initio calculations, spectroscopy, and ultra-cold atom
collision studies. The quantum-mechanical calculations are carried out for
temperatures in the range from 500 to 3000 K and are compared with previous
calculations and measurements where available.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, revtex, eps
A Novel Bio-Eco Technology Combined System for Rural Domestic Wastewater Treatment in a Tourism Area: A Full-Scale Study
Integrated Molecular Meta-Analysis of 1,000 Pediatric High-Grade and Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma.
We collated data from 157 unpublished cases of pediatric high-grade glioma and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma and 20 publicly available datasets in an integrated analysis of >1,000 cases. We identified co-segregating mutations in histone-mutant subgroups including loss of FBXW7 in H3.3G34R/V, TOP3A rearrangements in H3.3K27M, and BCOR mutations in H3.1K27M. Histone wild-type subgroups are refined by the presence of key oncogenic events or methylation profiles more closely resembling lower-grade tumors. Genomic aberrations increase with age, highlighting the infant population as biologically and clinically distinct. Uncommon pathway dysregulation is seen in small subsets of tumors, further defining the molecular diversity of the disease, opening up avenues for biological study and providing a basis for functionally defined future treatment stratification
Stochastic Acceleration by Turbulence
The subject of this paper is stochastic acceleration by plasma turbulence, a
process akin to the original model proposed by Fermi. We review the relative
merits of different acceleration models, in particular the so called first
order Fermi acceleration by shocks and second order Fermi by stochastic
processes, and point out that plasma waves or turbulence play an important role
in all mechanisms of acceleration. Thus, stochastic acceleration by turbulence
is active in most situations. We also show that it is the most efficient
mechanism of acceleration of relatively cool non relativistic thermal
background plasma particles. In addition, it can preferentially accelerate
electrons relative to protons as is needed in many astrophysical radiating
sources, where usually there are no indications of presence of shocks. We also
point out that a hybrid acceleration mechanism consisting of initial
acceleration by turbulence of background particles followed by a second stage
acceleration by a shock has many attractive features. It is demonstrated that
the above scenarios can account for many signatures of the accelerated
electrons, protons and other ions, in particular He and He, seen
directly as Solar Energetic Particles and through the radiation they produce in
solar flares.Comment: 29 pages 7 figures for proceedings of ISSI-Bern workshop on Particle
