    Adaptation options for agricultural cultivation systems in the South Central Coast under the context of climate change: Assessment Report.

    This report highlights the results of consultation meetings and field visits organized by the Department of Crop Production and the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security in Southeast Asia in association with the three offices of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the South Central Coast provinces of Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, and Khanh Hoa, in combination with consultation with the provinces in the conference: “Summing up crops production in the Winter-Spring season in 2018-2019, implementing the Summer-Autumn season, Main rice season in 2019 for the South Central Coast and the Central Highlands” held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Tam Ky City, Quang Nam Province on 12 April 2019. The meetings underlined the progress made by the provinces on climate change adaptation and mitigation, options for risk reductions in agricultural production, and conversion of crop structure as results of implementing the guidelines of the provinces and the Sector, especially, solutions for reservation and efficient and economic use of water under the context of climate change. This assessment report also reviews some issues related to the agricultural transformation of the region in adapting to risks caused by climate change. They are based on comparative advantages in terms of geographical location and market of key agricultural products. This report also points out shortcomings in using land and unreasonable points in managing and using important natural resources, especially water, and provides recommendations for the agricultural transformation and inter-regional connection with the Central Highlands and the Southeast. The team also introduces climate-related risks maps and adaptation plans (CS MAP) which is applied in the five provinces in the Mekong Delta Region, and hopes this solution’s expansion shall be supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the provinces

    FLAVONOIDS AND TRITERPENOIDS FROM CALLISTEMON CITRINUS AND THEIR INHIBITORY EFFECT ON NO PRODUCTION IN LPS-STIMULATED RAW264.7 MACROPHAGES

    Phytochemical investigation of the leaves and stems of Callistemon citrinus (Curtis) Skeels led to the isolation of 12 flavonoid and triterpenoid compounds,  including one new flavonoid, callistine A (1) and six known flavonoids 6,7- dimethyl-5,7-dihydroxy-4’-methoxy flavone (2), astragalin (3), quercetin (4), catechin (5), eucalyptin (6), and 8-demethyleucalyptin (7), along with 5 triterpenoids, 3-ÎČ-acetylmorolic acid (8), 3ÎČ-hydroxy-urs-11-en-13(28)-olide (9), betulinic acid (10), diospyrolide (11) and ursolic acid (12). Their chemical structures were determined from the spectroscopic evidences counting 1D- and 2D-NMR and HR-MS data. All the isolated compounds were examined for their anti-inflammatory activity against LPS-activated NO production in macrophage RAW264.7 cells. Among them, quercetin (4) and 3ÎČ-hydroxy-urs-11-en-13(28)-olide (9) showed potential inhibition activity in nitric oxide (NO)  production in RAW264.7 cells exposed to LPS

    Disinfection performance of an ultraviolet lamp: a CFD investigation

    Ultraviolet (UV)-based devices have shown their effectiveness on various germicidal purposes. To serve their design optimisation, the disinfection effectiveness of a vertically cylindrical UV lamp, whose wattage ranges from P = 30 − 100 W, is numerically investigated in this work. The UV radiation is solved by the Finite Volume Method together with the Discrete Ordinates model. Various results for the UV intensity and its bactericidal effects against several popular virus types, i.e., Corona-SARS, Herpes (type 2), and HIV, are reported and analysed in detail. Results show that the UV irradiance is greatly dependent on the lamp power. Additionally, it is indicated that the higher the lamp wattage employed, the larger the bactericidal rate is observed, resulting in the greater effectiveness of the UV disinfection process. Nevertheless, the wattage of P ≀ 100W is determined to be insufficient for an effective disinfection performance in a whole room; higher values of power must hence be considered in case intensive sterilization is required. Furthermore, the germicidal effect gets reduced with the viruses less sensitive to UV rays, e.g, the bactericidal rate against the HIV virus is only ∌8.98% at the surrounding walls

    During the last five years, Vietnam has been one of the countries most affected by climate change. Severe typhoons, flooding, cold spells, salinity intrusion, and drought have affected agriculture production across the country, from upland to lowland regions. Fortunately for Vietnam, continuous work in developing climate-smart agriculture has been occurring in research organizations and among innovative farmers and entrepreneurs. Application of various CSA practices and technologies to adapt to the impact of climate change in agriculture production have been expanding. However, there is a need to accelerate the scaling process of these practices and technologies in order to ensure growth of agriculture production and food security, increase income of farmers, make farming climate resilient, and contribute to global climate change mitigation. This book aims to provide basic information to researchers, managers, and technicians and extentionists at different levels on what CSA practices and technologies can be up scaled in different locations in Vietnam

    Safety and efficacy of fluoxetine on functional outcome after acute stroke (AFFINITY): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

    Background Trials of fluoxetine for recovery after stroke report conflicting results. The Assessment oF FluoxetINe In sTroke recoverY (AFFINITY) trial aimed to show if daily oral fluoxetine for 6 months after stroke improves functional outcome in an ethnically diverse population. Methods AFFINITY was a randomised, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial done in 43 hospital stroke units in Australia (n=29), New Zealand (four), and Vietnam (ten). Eligible patients were adults (aged ≄18 years) with a clinical diagnosis of acute stroke in the previous 2–15 days, brain imaging consistent with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, and a persisting neurological deficit that produced a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 1 or more. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 via a web-based system using a minimisation algorithm to once daily, oral fluoxetine 20 mg capsules or matching placebo for 6 months. Patients, carers, investigators, and outcome assessors were masked to the treatment allocation. The primary outcome was functional status, measured by the mRS, at 6 months. The primary analysis was an ordinal logistic regression of the mRS at 6 months, adjusted for minimisation variables. Primary and safety analyses were done according to the patient's treatment allocation. The trial is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN12611000774921. Findings Between Jan 11, 2013, and June 30, 2019, 1280 patients were recruited in Australia (n=532), New Zealand (n=42), and Vietnam (n=706), of whom 642 were randomly assigned to fluoxetine and 638 were randomly assigned to placebo. Mean duration of trial treatment was 167 days (SD 48·1). At 6 months, mRS data were available in 624 (97%) patients in the fluoxetine group and 632 (99%) in the placebo group. The distribution of mRS categories was similar in the fluoxetine and placebo groups (adjusted common odds ratio 0·94, 95% CI 0·76–1·15; p=0·53). Compared with patients in the placebo group, patients in the fluoxetine group had more falls (20 [3%] vs seven [1%]; p=0·018), bone fractures (19 [3%] vs six [1%]; p=0·014), and epileptic seizures (ten [2%] vs two [<1%]; p=0·038) at 6 months. Interpretation Oral fluoxetine 20 mg daily for 6 months after acute stroke did not improve functional outcome and increased the risk of falls, bone fractures, and epileptic seizures. These results do not support the use of fluoxetine to improve functional outcome after stroke

    Rubberised concrete for the design of pavement on soil

    International audienceCement-based materials suffer from low tensile strength and poor strain capacity. They are brittle and highly sensitive to cracking, notably to cracking due to length changes whatever the original cause of the length change. This study shows that a partial replacement (by volume) of natural aggregates by rubber aggregates obtained by grinding of used tyres is a suitable solution to improve the strain capacity before the macro-crack formation, conferring to the rubberised concrete a reduced propensity for shrinkage cracking. Moreover, the modulus of elasticity is advantageously reduced and it can be predicted using mix laws such as Hashin-Shrikman low bound considering rubberised concrete as a two-phase composite. Despite its low strength, the elastic quality index (EQI) of rubberised concrete remains in the range of values used for the design of pavements on soil. Besides this potential in terms of pavement application, it is also an interesting way to utilise industrial by-product and consequently a contribution to keep environment clean

    International audienceThe rapidly developing urbanization since the last decade of the 20th century leads to the strong groundwater extraction, resulting in the subsidence phenomena in the Hanoi, Vietnam. Recent advances in the multi-temporal spaceborne SAR interferometry, especially with Persistent Scatters Interferometry (PSI) approach, is the robust remote sensing technique for measuring ground subsidence in large scale with millimetric accuracy. This work has presented an advanced PSI analysis, to provide unprecedented spatial extent and continuous temporal coverage of the subsidence in Hanoi City. The correlation between the reference leveling velocity and the estimated PSI result is R2=0.86, and the root mean square error is 4.0 (mm/year), confirming their good agreement. The study shows that subsidence is most severe in the Haihung silt loam areas in the south of the city. The groundwater extraction resulting from urbanization and urban growth is mainly responsible for the subsidence
