    Biology of Hymenosoma orbiculare Desm in Lake Sibaya

    Hymenosoma orbiculare, (Crustacea: Brachyura: Hymenosomatidae) a crab common in estuaries in south- and south east Africa occurs in freshwater in Lake Sibaya at depths down to 40 m. This is the only known freshwater record of this species. The population density in the lake is fairly uniform declining in shallow and very deep water with an a11erage- of 2,5 m-2 (134 Jm-2). The proportion of females in the population increases with depth. Females carry fewer eggs than estuarine populations and breeding appears to occur throughout the year. Both zoeae and adults differ morphologically from estuarine populations. These differences in breeding, biology and morphology raise the possibility that the Lake Sibaya population is specifically distinct from estuarine populations and this is discussed in relation to other instances of hymenosomatid invasion of freshwater habitats.Hymenosoma orbiculare, (Crustacea: Brachyura: Hymenosomatidae) 'n krap wat algemeen voorkom in riviermondings in suid en suidoos Afrika, word ook aangetref in die varswater van die Sibayameer tot op 'n diepte van 40 m. Hierdie verskille in teling, biologie en morfologie dui op 'n moontlike spesieverskil tussen die bevolking in die Sibayameer en die in riviermondings. Hierdie aspekte word bespreek in die lig van ander gevalle van toetreding tot varswaterhabitatte onder die Hymenosomatidae

    Symmetrization and Entanglement of Arbitrary States of Qubits

    Given two arbitrary pure states ∣ϕ> |\phi> and ∣ψ> |\psi> of qubits or higher level states, we provide arguments in favor of states of the form 12(∣ψ>∣ϕ>+i∣ϕ>∣ψ>) \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}(|\psi> |\phi> + i |\phi> |\psi>) instead of symmetric or anti-symmetric states, as natural candidates for optimally entangled states constructed from these states. We show that such states firstly have on the average a high value of concurrence, secondly can be constructed by a universal unitary operator independent of the input states. We also show that these states are the only ones which can be produced with perfect fidelity by any quantum operation designed for intertwining two pure states with a relative phase. A probabilistic method is proposed for producing any pre-determined relative phase into the combination of any two arbitrary states.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur

    On a suggestion relating topological and quantum mechanical entanglements

    We analyze a recent suggestion \cite{kauffman1,kauffman2} on a possible relation between topological and quantum mechanical entanglements. We show that a one to one correspondence does not exist, neither between topologically linked diagrams and entangled states, nor between braid operators and quantum entanglers.     Reconstruction methods — P‾ANDA focussing-light guide disc DIRC

    The Focussing-Lightguide Disc DIRC will provide crucial Particle Identification (PID) information for the P‾ANDA experiment at FAIR, GSI. This detector presents a challenging environment for reconstruction due to the complexity of the expected hit patterns and the operating conditions of the P‾ANDA experiment. A discussion of possible methods to reconstruct PID from this detector is given here. Reconstruction software is currently under development

    Anomalous single production of fourth generation t′t' quarks at ILC and CLIC

    We present a detailed study of the anomalous single fourth generation t′t' quark production within the dominant Standard Model(SM) decay modes at future e+e−e^+e^- colliders. We calculate the signal and background cross sections in the mass range 300-800 GeV. We also discuss the limits of t′qγt'q\gamma and t′qZt'qZ (q=u,cq=u,c) anomalous couplings as well as values of attainable integrated luminosity for 3σ\sigma observation limit.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, version to be published on Nucl.Phys.

    Entanglement in the One-dimensional Kondo Necklace Model

    We discuss the thermal and magnetic entanglement in the one-dimensional Kondo necklace model. Firstly, we show how the entanglement naturally present at zero temperature is distributed among pairs of spins according to the strength of the two couplings of the chain, namely, the Kondo exchange interaction and the hopping energy. The effect of the temperature and the presence of an external magnetic field is then investigated, being discussed the adjustment of these variables in order to control the entanglement available in the system. In particular, it is indicated the existence of a critical magnetic field above which the entanglement undergoes a sharp variation, leading the ground state to a completely unentangled phase.Comment: 8 pages, 13 EPS figures. v2: four references adde

    Exact Minimum Eigenvalue Distribution of an Entangled Random Pure State

    A recent conjecture regarding the average of the minimum eigenvalue of the reduced density matrix of a random complex state is proved. In fact, the full distribution of the minimum eigenvalue is derived exactly for both the cases of a random real and a random complex state. Our results are relevant to the entanglement properties of eigenvectors of the orthogonal and unitary ensembles of random matrix theory and quantum chaotic systems. They also provide a rare exactly solvable case for the distribution of the minimum of a set of N {\em strongly correlated} random variables for all values of N (and not just for large N).Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures included; typos corrected; to appear in J.     Analysis of Residual Stresses in Laser-Shock-Peened and Shot-Peened Marine Steel Welds

    Laser peening is now the preferred method of surface treatment in many applications. The magnitude and depth of the compressive residual stress induced by laser peening can be influenced strongly by the number of peen layers (the number of laser hits at each point) and by processing conditions including the use of a protective ablative layer. In this study, residual stresses have been characterized in laser and shot-peened marine butt welds with a particular focus at the fatigue crack initiation location at the weld toe. X-ray diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, incremental center-hole drilling, and the contour method were used for determination of residual stress. Results showed that the use of ablative tape increased the surface compressive stress, and the depth of compressive stress increased with an increase in number of peening layers. A key result is that variation of residual stress profile across laser peen spots was seen, and the residual stress magnitude varies between the center and edges of the spots

    Cell-type specific H+-ATPase activity enables root K+ retention and mediates acclimation to salinity

    While the importance of cell-type specificity in plant adaptive responses is widely accepted, only a limited number of studies have addressed this issue at the functional level. We have combined electrophysiological, imaging, and biochemical techniques to reveal physiological mechanisms conferring higher sensitivity of apical root cells to salinity in barley. We show that salinity application to the root apex arrests root growth in a highly tissue- and treatment-specific manner. Although salinity-induced transient net Na+ uptake was about 4-fold higher in the root apex compared with the mature zone, mature root cells accumulated more cytosolic and vacuolar Na+ suggesting that higher sensitivity of apical cells to salt is not related to either enhanced Na+ exclusion or sequestration inside the root. Rather, the above differential sensitivity between the two zones originates from a 10-fold difference in K+ efflux between the mature zone and the apical region (much poorer in the root apex) of the root. Major factors contributing to this poor K+ retention ability are: (1) an intrinsically lower H+-ATPase activity in the root apex; (2) greater salt-induced membrane depolarization and (3) a higher ROS production under NaCl and a larger density of ROS-activated cation currents in the apex. Salinity treatment increased (2 to 5 fold) the content of 10 (out of 25 detected) amino acids in the root apex but not in the mature zone and changed the organic acid and sugar contents. The causal link between observed changes in the root metabolic profile and regulation of transporters activity is discussed

    Measurement of the cosmic microwave background polarization lensing power spectrum from two years of POLARBEAR data

    We present a measurement of the gravitational lensing deflection power spectrum reconstructed with two seasons of cosmic microwave background polarization data from the POLARBEAR experiment. Observations were taken at 150 GHz from 2012 to 2014 and surveyed three patches of sky totaling 30 square degrees. We test the consistency of the lensing spectrum with a cold dark matter cosmology and reject the no-lensing hypothesis at a confidence of 10.9σ, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. We observe a value of AL = 1.33 ± 0.32 (statistical) ±0.02 (systematic) ±0.07 (foreground) using all polarization lensing estimators, which corresponds to a 24% accurate measurement of the lensing amplitude. Compared to the analysis of the first- year data, we have improved the breadth of both the suite of null tests and the error terms included in the estimation of systematic contamination
