Amor y Apoyo: Lecciones de Latinx Families in Nourishing Resilience to First and Second-Generation College Students

The present qualitative study aims to understand how Latino/Hispanic herea er referred to as Latinx, parent involvement is different or similar among first- and second-generation college students in how they experience higher education and how parental education impacts the use of student support services. Hence, supporting Latinx student retention by developing university and parental relationships. Second-generation college students and Latinx parents were unable to be included in the study because of their scarcity or hesitation of participating. Therefore, participants included a convenience sample of six first-generation undergraduate students from a 4-year institution. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain their stories of parental involvement and student involvement. Results suggest that (1) first-generation college students experience a hands-off involvement from parents, however, they enjoyed the freedom this brought, (2) Latinx parents might have a misunderstanding of college student identity, and (3) students expressed a desire to have their parents learn about and understand mental health. Implications of findings include universities creating more resources to support Latinx students’ mental health, as well as earlier school outreach for Latinx parent involvement to better inform them about the college lifestyle

The Untapped Potential of Commuters: Engaging Faculty and Staff to Foster a Commuter-Inclusive Space and Student Interest at the University of San Diego

The commuter student population faces many challenges in getting involved on campus. Taking an asset-based approach, this study aimed to enhance first-year commuter engagement and support their sense of belonging at a private, faith-based university. By modifying McNiff and Whitehead’s model of reflect-plan-act-exhibit, students were invited to engage in several identity, community, and leadership activities throughout the academic year. Results suggest first-year commuters need role modeling or mentorship that is challenging and supportive, the support of creating a ‘third space’ away from home and school, and the development of authentic and genuine connections among peers and staff. It is recommended that practitioners acknowledge and embrace students’ commuter identity and work to increase the visibility and accessibility of commuter-targeted programming. Additionally, staff must build a community among commuter students through dedicated spaces and peer mentoring programs to strengthen and enhance first-year commuter cocurricular engagement

Les représentations sociales des droits de l’homme et les valeurs chez des étudiants francophones à Québec

La présente étude, menée auprès d'étudiantes et d'étudiants francophones québécois, analyse les représentations sociales des droits de l'homme (RSDH). Par le moyen d'un questionnaire basé sur la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme (1948), cette recherche examine les structures du champ des RSDH et l'ancrage de ces champs dans le système des valeurs et par rapport aux perceptions de tensions et d'injustices personnelles liées à différentes catégories sociales. Les résultats montrent que même si les sujets partagent une structure commune du champ des RSDH semblable aux classifications institutionnelles, et plus spécifiquement à celle de René Cassin, des variations interindividuelles apparaissent également dans le champ de ces représentations. En outre, à partir des évaluations demandées au sujet des 30 articles de la Déclaration, deux principes organisateurs (contributions gouvernementales / contributions personnelles) sont mis en évidence. À partir de ces principes, trois profils d'individus sont dégagés: les optimistes, les personnalistes et les gouvernementalistes. Ils se distinguent par les différents ancrages dans leur structure de valeurs, leurs perceptions de tensions entre diverses catégories sociales et d'injustices sociales personnelles ressenties à leur égard.This study is conducted among students of three French speaking universities in Québec. The aim is to analyze their social representations of Human Rights (SRHR). Using a questionnaire elaborated on the basis of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) (1948), the authors examine the field structures of the SRHR and their anchoring in the value system and in the representations of social conflicts and personal injustice in regards to different social categories. Results show that sets of responses are organized in a common structure, similar to Cassin’s classification of the UDHR. They also put forth systematic variations in individual positioning in the area of HR. Analyses of the responses to the 30 articles of HR also permit to extract two organizing principles : “ personal involvement ” and “ government efficacy ”. Results’ combination of both HR classification and organizing principles brings to the fore three different groups of subjects in regards to their positioning toward HR : the optimists, the governmentalists and the personalists. Their distinctiveness may be explained by their different anchoring in values andin representations of the nature of relationships between social groups and categories

Diseño e implementación de un dispositivo para la automatización del disparo de un arma de fuego hechiza mediante señales EMG obtenidas con el sensor MYO

En la actualidad la fabricación de armas ilegales se ha convertido en un fenómeno delincuencial que ha afectado a la sociedad colombiana en los últimos años, esto se debe a que en el país no se lleva un control o registro de los talleres de armas artesanales o hechizas que se encuentran ubicados generalmente en barrios populares, dando como resultado una amplia gama y cantidad de estas armas circulando en las calles de las diferentes ciudades. Uno de los principales riesgos que presentan estas armas está asociado a los materiales y técnicas con que son fabricadas, las cuales en su mayoría no son resistentes a la combustión interna generada para impulsar el proyectil. Esto las hace altamente peligrosas para las entidades judiciales que se encargan del estudio e investigación de los diferentes eventos delincuenciales que se presentan. Para el caso puntual los peritos, que son los encargados de realizar la prueba de aptitud, corren un riesgo amplio de sufrir un accidente dado que dichas armas se pueden desintegrar o estallar en sus manos al dispararla. Sin embargo en el mercado existe una serie de dispositivos que permite realizar pruebas en armas de fuego de manera segura como los prototipos de la compañía Prototypa que comercializa equipos para la protección de personal en el laboratorio de balística, pero estos no son prototipos totalmente prácticos para evaluar una amplia gama de armas de fuego y en ocasiones resulta costoso para las entidades balísticas acceder a estos equipos

Pillars of creation amongst destruction: Star formation in molecular clouds near R136 in 30 Doradus

New sensitive CO(2-1) observations of the 30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud are presented. We identify a chain of three newly discovered molecular clouds we name KN1, KN2 and KN3 lying within 2--14 pc in projection from the young massive cluster R136 in 30 Doradus. Excited H$_2$ 2.12$\mu$m emission is spatially coincident with the molecular clouds, but ionized Br$\gamma$ emission is not. We interpret these observations as the tails of pillar-like structures whose ionized heads are pointing towards R136. Based on infrared photometry, we identify a new generation of stars forming within this structure.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (includes 13 pages, 8 figures). Programa “Estrategias” en la comprensión de textos argumentativos en estudiantes del primer ciclo, 2015

El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo demostrar los efectos del Programa “Estrategias” en la comprensión de textos argumentativos en estudiantes del primer ciclo, 2015. Dicho estudio empleó la metodología hipotética deductiva de diseño cuasi experimental, longitudinal. La población estuvo constituida por sesenta y cuatro estudiantes del primer ciclo de una universidad privada. Se utilizó el muestreo probabilístico intencionado. Para construir, validar y demostrar la confiabilidad de los instrumentos se ha considerado la validez de contenido, mediante la Técnica de Opinión de Expertos y su instrumento es el informe de juicio de Expertos de las variables de estudio; se utilizó la técnica de la encuesta y su instrumento el cuestionario, con preguntas tipo dicotómico. Para la confiabilidad de los instrumentos se usó KR20. Concluyéndose que el Programa “Estrategias” presenta un efecto positivo en la comprensión de textos argumentativos en estudiantes del primer ciclo, 2015, con un nivel de significancia p=0.000
