Ranking-based Ties Social Networks : an illustration based on a system of Fashion Capital Cities in the world.
Our paper aims to apply a non-conventional Social Network Analysis to a network generated from an initial sorting of data with mere order. The aim is to test whether and how one relationship set 'conveniently' generated by the ranking is able to provide a coherent system of interactions with possible practical and theoretical utility. We consider a system of city distributions where we focus on ¿Ranking-Based Ties¿ social networks, considering a system of 'objects' of the same class that would be able to interact. The objects in question are ordered according to their 'performance' in a particular ranking. According to a survey developed by Global Language Monitor, there is a ranked number for every capital that could be considered important among the world's most fashionable cities. Using the rank of scoring average we construct a fashion cities network in order to analyze the dynamics and the topology of the system following a gradual process of clustering or densification of relationships consistent with key network statistics analysis
A Need for a Paradigm Shift in the Spanish Banking Sector? The Evolution from Regional to Multinational Banks in Spain.
Since the approval of Spain¿s 2012 National Budget on March 30, 2012, some doubts and controversies have added up to many fears in the private sector regarding the measures and stimuli that the Spanish government was going to undertake. At the same time, this situation was in some measure aggravated by the financial backlog of many small and medium companies, which are and will continue, in the following years to be completely unable to comply with their financial requirements. In line with Boronat Ombuena¿s (2009a, 2009b, 2010, 2012) requirements in his new approach to finance and private sector liaisons, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the recent years of the credit sector in Spain as well as its direct and mid-term effects that its mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have contributed up to date, and will still produce in the near future. We will take a closer look at the evolution of the banking sector in Spain from 1995 to 2012 through a historically-based methodology, compiling and synthesizing the existing financial and risk market information and analyzing its evolution. We shall observe that in a single year, the total number of savings banks in Spain decreased from 45 to only 15 entities and that the risks the financial system took over these last few years were not equally distributed across the entities, resulting in an advanced foreclosure of the regional savings banks and in a market-share growth for the commercial banking entities. This process has resulted in creating larger entities and, in some cases, a vacuum of regional and local credit entities that in the mid-long term will eventually end up in a representative loss on credit availability. These circumstances call into question the need for a paradigm change and most importantly, new approaches to solve the new challenges that can result in the financial fluidity of the system and the eventual recovery of the economic structure
Determination of micro-scale plastic strain caused by orthogonal cutting
An electron beam lithography technique has been used to produce microgrids in order to measure local plastic strains, induced during an orthogonal cutting process, at the microscopic scale in the shear zone and under the machined surface. Microgrids with a 10 μm pitch and a line width less than 1 μm have been printed on the polished surface of an aluminium alloy AA 5182 to test the applicability of the technique in metal cutting operations. Orthogonal cutting tests were carried out at 40 mm/s. Results show that the distortion of the grids could successfully be used to compute plastic strains due to orthogonal cutting with higher accuracy compared to other techniques reported in the literature. Strain maps of the machined specimens have been produced and show high-strain gradients very close to the machined surface with local values reaching 2.2. High-resolution strain measurements carried out in the primary deformation zone also provide new insight into the material deformation during the chip formation process
High Temperature Electron Localization in dense He Gas
We report new accurate mesasurements of the mobility of excess electrons in
high density Helium gas in extended ranges of temperature and density to ascertain
the effect of temperature on the formation and dynamics of localized electron
states. The main result of the experiment is that the formation of localized
states essentially depends on the relative balance of fluid dilation energy,
repulsive electron-atom interaction energy, and thermal energy. As a
consequence, the onset of localization depends on the medium disorder through
gas temperature and density. It appears that the transition from delocalized to
localized states shifts to larger densities as the temperature is increased.
This behavior can be understood in terms of a simple model of electron
self-trapping in a spherically symmetric square well.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figure

Associations between sole ulcer, white line disease and digital dermatitis and the milk yield of 1824 dairy cows on 30 dairy cow farms in England and Wales from February 2003–November 2004
The milk yields of 1824 cows were used to investigate the effect of lesion-specific causes of lameness, based on farmer treatment and diagnosis of lame cows, on milk yield. A three level hierarchical model of repeated test day yields within cows within herds was used to investigate the impact of lesion-specific causes of lameness (sole ulcer, white line disease, digital dermatitis and other causes) on milk yield before and after treatment compared with unaffected cows. Cattle which developed sole ulcer (SU) and white line disease (WLD) were higher yielding cattle before they were diagnosed. Their milk production fell to below that of the mean of unaffected cows before diagnosis and remained low after diagnosis. In cattle which developed digital dermatitis (DD) there was no significant difference in milk yield before treatment and a slightly raised milk yield immediately after treatment. The estimated milk loss attributable to SU and WLD was approximately 570kg and 370kg respectively. These results highlight that specific types of lameness vary by herds and within herds they are associated with higher yielding cattle. Consequently lesion-specific lameness reduction programmes targeting the cow and farm specific causes of lameness might be more effective than generic recommendations. They also highlight the importance of milk loss when estimating the economic impact of SU and WLD on the farms profitability
The preparation and defense of the Degree Final Project is one of the major developments derived from the process of building the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). This work reflects all learning acquired by students in previous years of the corresponding degree, where students face the process of autonomous knowledge generation and the difficulties of practical or applied work. This document reports on the development of an interactive multimedia tutorial, adapted to the educational objectives and competencies of a specific target audience. We developed this guide at the University of Valencia (Spain) by means of the following steps: a) identification of the contents to be included in the tutorial and design of learning materials, b) technical development and implementation of web materials (www.uv.es/innopfg) and c) evaluation of both materials developed and learning processes. We have prepared the following learning materials: didactic units that describe the characteristics, structure and content that must be included in each of the sections that make up the final project work; list of relevant resources of use in making an approach "state of art" and to facilitate academic writing (such as databases or reference management software); tests for students to verify the adequacy of the texts, which have been prepared according to the rules and characteristics of the final project work; and, finally, a video as an example where an oral presentation and defense of the project is shown. Exelearning software was used for the development of materials.
High frequency resonant experiments in Fe molecular clusters
Precise resonant experiments on Fe magnetic clusters have been
conducted down to 1.2 K at various tranverse magnetic fields, using a
cylindrical resonator cavity with 40 different frequencies between 37 GHz and
110 GHz. All the observed resonances for both single crystal and oriented
powder, have been fitted by the eigenstates of the hamiltonian . We have identified the
resonances corresponding to the coherent quantum oscillations for different
orientations of spin S = 10.Comment: to appear in Phys.Rev. B (August 2000
Quantum dynamics of crystals of molecular nanomagnets inside a resonant cavity
It is shown that crystals of molecular nanomagnets exhibit enhanced magnetic
relaxation when placed inside a resonant cavity. Strong dependence of the
magnetization curve on the geometry of the cavity has been observed, providing
evidence of the coherent microwave radiation by the crystals. A similar
dependence has been found for a crystal placed between Fabry-Perot
superconducting mirrors. These observations open the possibility of building a
nanomagnetic microwave laser pumped by the magnetic field
Spin dynamics of Mn12-acetate in the thermally-activated tunneling regime: ac-susceptibility and magnetization relaxation
In this work, we study the spin dynamics of Mn12-acetate molecules in the
regime of thermally assisted tunneling. In particular, we describe the system
in the presence of a strong transverse magnetic field. Similar to recent
experiments, the relaxation time/rate is found to display a series of
resonances; their Lorentzian shape is found to stem from the tunneling. The
dynamic susceptibility is calculated starting from the microscopic
Hamiltonian and the resonant structure manifests itself also in .
Similar to recent results reported on another molecular magnet, Fe8, we find
oscillations of the relaxation rate as a function of the transverse magnetic
field when the field is directed along a hard axis of the molecules. This
phenomenon is attributed to the interference of the geometrical or Berry phase.
We propose susceptibility experiments to be carried out for strong transverse
magnetic fields to study of these oscillations and for a better resolution of
the sharp satellite peaks in the relaxation rates.Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev. B; citations/references
