Experimental investigation of dynamical invariants in bipartite entanglement

The non-conservation of entanglement, when two or more particles interact, sets it apart from other dynamical quantities like energy and momentum. It does not allow the interpretation of the subtle dynamics of entanglement as a flow of this quantity between the constituents of the system. Here we show that adding a third party to a two-particle system may lead to a conservation law that relates the quantities characterizing the bipartite entanglement between each of the parties and the other two. We provide an experimental demonstration of this idea using entangled photons, and generalize it to N-partite GHZ states

Vascular anastornoses in organ transplants of small anirnals are usually performed with a manual suture using interrupted or continuous stitcbes, although over the last few years a suturefree technique has been deueloped consisting of the use of cuffs. In this paper, the cuff technique which our team used to perform vascular anastomoses in experimental organ transplants, is described. The cuff is made up oi a tube or body wich has a prolongation or up, tbe size varying according to the calibre of the blood vessel to be anastomosed. The advantages of this method in cornparison with manual sutures, is the ease with which the tecbnique is learnt, its low cost, and the speed with which the anastomoses are carried out, all of which are watertight. In conclusion, this technique constitutes an alternative to the classical manual suture techniques without increasing the percentage of cornplications, and allowing long-term suruiual rates in the experimental models studied

Coupling biological detection to liquid chromatography

In this study we have reviewed the clinical, radiographical and densitometric follow-up of 30 Bihapro® total hip hydroxyapatite-coated arthroplasties. There were complications in 3 cases (10%). Densitometric results showed an increase of bone density around the prosthesis in 97% of cases. The average increase in bone denstiy (periprosthetic/normal bone ratio) varied from 1 to 1.3 in the acetabulum and from 1.4 to 1.5 in the metaphysial area of the femur (Gruen's zones 1 and 7). Clinical, radiographical and densitometric results (CADIA System) exhibited a foot correlation in 97% of cases

Testing the chemical tagging technique with open clusters

    Get PDF
Context. Stars are born together from giant molecular clouds and, if we assume that the priors were chemically homogeneous and well-mixed, we expect them to share the same chemical composition. Most of the stellar aggregates are disrupted while orbiting the Galaxy and most of the dynamic information is lost, thus the only possibility of reconstructing the stellar formation history is to analyze the chemical abundances that we observe today. Aims. The chemical tagging technique aims to recover disrupted stellar clusters based merely on their chemical composition. We evaluate the viability of this technique to recover co-natal stars that are no longer gravitationally bound. Methods. Open clusters are co-natal aggregates that have managed to survive together. We compiled stellar spectra from 31 old and intermediate-age open clusters, homogeneously derived atmospheric parameters, and 17 abundance species, and applied machine learning algorithms to group the stars based on their chemical composition. This approach allows us to evaluate the viability and efficiency of the chemical tagging technique. Results. We found that stars at different evolutionary stages have distinct chemical patterns that may be due to NLTE effects, atomic diffusion, mixing, and biases. When separating stars into dwarfs and giants, we observed that a few open clusters show distinct chemical signatures while the majority show a high degree of overlap. This limits the recovery of co-natal aggregates by applying the chemical tagging technique. Nevertheless, there is room for improvement if more elements are included and models are improved.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Corrected typo

Spatial distribution of bird community and their niche overlap on Media Luna wetland was the main objective of this work. A wide and heterogeneous use of the system resources were detected, mainlyrelated to feeding and resting activities. By resting activity, most of the species were gregarious, sharing branches and riparian grassland, showing overlap among them. Whereas in feeding activity there was less evident overlap. Piscivorous egrets and herons (Ardeidae) showed high overlap among them, but temporal resources partitioning of nocturnal species such as Nycticorax nycticorax L, or different diet of Bubulcus ibis L, reduce the competence. Some species such as Jacana spinosa L realised all itsactivities in an only type of habitat with the lowest overlap with another species. Low interespecific aggressiveness was observed. Anthropic disturbances may favoured some species abundance and possible decrease of another species. Bad management actions had high consequences in the study area. So, future management actions must consider information of use and resource partitioning of bird group.

Isolation of a New Mexican Strain of Bacillus subtilis with Antifungal and Antibacterial Activities

    Get PDF
Although several strains of B. subtilis with antifungal activity have been isolated worldwide, to date there are no published reports regarding the isolation of a native B. subtilis strain from strawberry plants in Mexico. A native bacterium (Bacillus subtilis 21) demonstrated in vitro antagonistic activity against different plant pathogenic fungi. Under greenhouse conditions, it was shown that plants infected with Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium verticillioides and treated with B. subtilis 21 produced augment in the number of leaves per plant and an increment in the length of healthy leaves in comparison with untreated plants. In addition, B. subtilis 21 showed activity against pathogenic bacteria. Secreted proteins by B. subtilis 21 were studied, detecting the presence of proteases and bacteriocin-like inhibitor substances that could be implicated in its antagonistic activity. Chitinases and zwittermicin production could not be detected. Then, B. subtilis 21 could potentially be used to control phytopathogenic fungi that infect strawberry plants

The diagnosis of hereditary angioedema: family caregivers’ experiences

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to understand the experiences of family caregivers in the process of diagnosing hereditary angioedema. An interpretive and qualitative research methodology based on Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics was carried out. Data collection took place between May 2015 and August 2016 and included a focus group and in-depth interviews with 16 family caregivers. Two themes define the experiences of family caregivers: “Family life focuses on identifying the problem” and “Discovering and coping with a complex diagnosis.” The process of diagnosis generates fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and incomprehension. Family caregivers are the main support for patients diagnosed with hereditary angioedema. As they share in the patients’ suffering, they need a diagnosis to be established to be able to cope with the disease and offer support. Family health nurses can contribute to improving the coping process in this phase of the disease
