Optimal fall indicators for slip induced falls on a cross-slope
Abstract: Slip induced falls are among the most common cause of major occupational injuries in the UK as well as being a major public health concern in the elderly population. This study aimed to determine the optimal fall indicators for fall detection models which could be used to reduce the detrimental consequences of falls. A total of 264 kinematic variables covering three dimensional full body model translation and rotational measures were analysed
during normal walking, successful recovery from slips and falls on a cross-slope. Large effect sizes were found for three kinematic variables which were able to distinguish falls from normal walking and successful recovery. Further work should consider other types of daily living activities as results show that the optimal kinematic fall indicators can vary considerably between movement types
Gait adaptations to awareness and experience of a slip when walking on a cross-slope
Falls that occur as a result of a slip are one of the leading causes of injuries, particularly in the elderly population. Previous studies have focused on slips that occur on a flat surface. Slips on a laterally sloping surface are important and may be related to different mechanisms of balance recovery. This type of slip might result in different gait adaptations to those previously described on a flat surface, but these adaptations have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to assess whether, when walking on a cross-slope, young adults adapted their gait when made aware of a potential slip, and having experienced a slip. Gait parameters were compared for three conditions-(1) Normal walking; (2) Walking after being made aware of a potential slip (participants were told that a slip may occur); (3) Walking after experiencing a slip (Participants had already experienced at least one slip induced using a soapy contaminant). Gait parameters were only analysed for trials in which there was no slippery contaminant present on the walkway. Stride length and walking velocity were significantly reduced, and stance duration was significantly greater in the awareness and experience conditions compared to normal walking, with no significant differences in any gait parameters between the awareness and experience conditions. In addition, 46.7% of the slip trials resulted in a fall. This is higher than reported for slips induced on a flat surface, suggesting slips on a cross-slope are more hazardous. This would help explain the more cautious gait patterns observed in both the awareness and experience conditions

A test has been made to explore the possibility of beam dump neutrino experiments with short target‐detector separations and modest detectors. Results have given a positive neutrino signal which is interpreted in the context of various charmed‐meson production models. An archaeal family-B DNA polymerase variant able to replicate past DNA damage: occurrence of replicative and translesion synthesis polymerases within the B family
A mutant of the high fidelity family-B DNA polymerase from the archaeon Thermococcus gorgonarius (Tgo-Pol), able to replicate past DNA lesions, is described. Gain of function requires replacement of the three amino acid loop region in the fingers domain of Tgo-Pol with a longer version, found naturally in eukaryotic Pol zeta (a family-B translesion synthesis polymerase). Inactivation of the 3'–5' proofreading exonuclease activity is also necessary. The resulting Tgo-Pol Z1 variant is proficient at initiating replication from base mismatches and can read through damaged bases, such as abasic sites and thymine photo-dimers. Tgo-Pol Z1 is also proficient at extending from primers that terminate opposite aberrant bases. The fidelity of Tgo-Pol Z1 is reduced, with amarked tendency tomake changes at G:C base pairs. Together, these results suggest that the loop region of the fingers domain may play a critical role in determining whether a family-B enzyme falls into the accurate genome-replicating category or is an errorprone translesion synthesis polymerase. Tgo-Pol Z1 may also be useful for amplification of damaged DNA
Improved Biomedical and Psychological Outcomes 1 Year After Structured Education in Flexible Insulin Therapy for People With Type 1 Diabetes: The U.K. DAFNE experience
OBJECTIVEdDAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating), a structured education program
in flexible insulin therapy, has been widely adopted in the U.K. after validation in a randomized
trial. To determine benefits in routine practice, we collected biomedical and
psychological data from all participants attending during a 12-month period.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSdHbA1c, weight, self-reported hypoglycemia
awareness, severe hypoglycemia frequency, PAID (Problem Areas In Diabetes), HADS (Hospital
Anxiety and Depression Scale), and EuroQol Group 5-Dimension Self-Report Questionnaire
scores were recorded prior to DAFNE and after 1 year.
RESULTSdComplete baseline and follow-up HbA1c data were available for 639 (54.9%) of
1,163 attendees. HbA1c fell from 8.51 6 1.41 (mean 6 SD) to 8.24 6 1.29% (difference 0.27
[95% CI 0.16–0.38]; P , 0.001), with a greater mean fall of 0.44% from baseline HbA1c .8.5%.
Severe hypoglycemia rate fell from 1.7 6 8.5 to 0.6 6 3.7 episodes per person per year (1.1 [0.7–
1.4]) and hypoglycemia recognition improved in 43% of those reporting unawareness. Baseline
psychological distress was evident, with a PAID score of 25.2 and HADS scores of 5.3 (anxiety)
and 4.8 (depression), falling to 16.7 (8.5 [6.6–10.4]), 4.6 (0.7 [0.4–1.0]), and 4.2 (0.6 [0.3–0.8]),
respectively (all P , 0.001 at 1 year). Clinically relevant anxiety and depression (HADS $8) fell
from 24.4 to 18.0% and 20.9 to 15.5%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONSdA structured education program delivered in routine clinical practice not
only improves HbA1c while reducing severe hypoglycemia rate and restoring hypoglycemia
awareness but also reduces psychological distress and improves perceived well-being

The international law framework regulating the use of armed drones
This article provides a holistic examination of the international legal frameworks which regulate targeted killings by drones. The article argues that for a particular drone strike to be lawful, it must satisfy the legal requirements under all applicable international legal regimes, namely: the law regulating the use of force (ius ad bellum); international humanitarian law and international human rights law. It is argued that the legality of a drone strike under the ius ad bellum does not preclude the wrongfulness of that strike under international humanitarian law or international human rights law, and that since those latter obligations are owed to individuals, one State cannot consent to their violation by another State. The article considers the important legal challenges that the use of armed drones poses under each of the three legal frameworks mentioned above. It considers the law relating to the use of force by States against non-State groups abroad. This part examines the principles of self-defence and consent, in so far as they may be relied upon to justify targeted killings abroad. The article then turns to some of the key controversies in the application of international humanitarian law to drone strikes. It examines the threshold for non-international armed conflicts, the possibility of a global non-international armed conflict and the question of who may be targeted in a non-international armed conflict. The final substantive section of the article considers the nature and application of the right to life in armed conflict, as well as the extraterritorial application of that right particularly in territory not controlled by the State conducting the strike
Unusual quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey selected by means of Kohonen self-organising maps
We exploit the spectral archive of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data
Release 7 to select unusual quasar spectra. The selection method is based on a
combination of the power of self-organising maps and the visual inspection of a
huge number of spectra. Self-organising maps were applied to nearly 10^5
spectra classified as quasars by the SDSS pipeline. Particular attention was
paid to minimise possible contamination by rare peculiar stellar spectral
types. We present a catalogue of 1005 quasars with unusual spectra. This large
sample provides a useful resource for both studying properties and relations
of/between different types of unusual quasars and selecting particularly
interesting objects. The spectra are grouped into six types. All these types
turn out to be on average more luminous than comparison samples of normal
quasars after a statistical correction is made for intrinsic reddening. Both
the unusual broad absorption line (BAL) quasars and the strong iron emitters
have significantly lower radio luminosities than normal quasars. We also
confirm that strong BALs avoid the most radio-luminous quasars. Finally, we
create a sample of quasars similar to the two "mysterious" objects discovered
by Hall et al. (2002) and briefly discuss the quasar properties and possible
explanations of their highly peculiar spectra. (Abstract modified to match the
