The Role of Disability in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The social construction of disability posits that media play an important role in the construction of disability. Few studies have systematically examined the role of disability in film or television. Engaging in a multiple perspective analysis, this dissertation examined the role of disability in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Data were analyzed with a content analysis, a thematic analysis, and an ideological rhetorical criticism. Disability was found to be used as a tool of character, plot, and atmosphere development. The data also suggested that negative assumptions of disability, often reinforcing of stereotypes, were readily apparent in the series and identifiable via multiple methods of analysis. The results also confirmed that analyzing artifacts using unique configurations of methods can result in new and more nuanced insights into the role of disability in popular culture
Tiling models for metadislocations in AlPdMn approximants
The AlPdMn quasicrystal approximants xi, xi', and xi'_n of the 1.6 nm
decagonal phase and R, T, and T_n of the 1.2 nm decagonal phase can be viewed
as arrangements of cluster columns on two-dimensional tilings. We substitute
the tiles by Penrose rhombs and show, that alternative tilings can be
constructed by a simple cut and projection formalism in three dimensional
hyperspace. It follows that in the approximants there is a phasonic degree of
freedom, whose excitation results in the reshuffling of the clusters. We apply
the tiling model for metadislocations, which are special textures of partial
dislocations.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of International Conference on
Quasicrystals
The surface science of quasicrystals
The surfaces of quasicrystals have been extensively studied since about 1990. In this paper we review work on the structure and morphology of clean surfaces, and their electronic and phonon structure. We also describe progress in adsorption and epitaxy studies. The paper is illustrated throughout with examples from the literature. We offer some reflections on the wider impact of this body of work and anticipate areas for future development.

Precision mass measurements of magnesium isotopes and implications on the validity of the Isobaric Mass Multiplet Equation
If the mass excess of neutron-deficient nuclei and their neutron-rich mirror
partners are both known, it can be shown that deviations of the Isobaric Mass
Multiplet Equation (IMME) in the form of a cubic term can be probed. Such a
cubic term was probed by using the atomic mass of neutron-rich magnesium
isotopes measured using the TITAN Penning trap and the recently measured
proton-separation energies of Cl and Ar. The atomic mass of
Mg was found to be within 1.6 of the value stated in the Atomic
Mass Evaluation. The atomic masses of Mg were measured to be both
within 1, while being 8 and 34 times more precise, respectively. Using
the Mg mass excess and previous measurements of Cl we uncovered a
cubic coefficient of = 28(7) keV, which is the largest known cubic
coefficient of the IMME. This departure, however, could also be caused by
experimental data with unknown systematic errors. Hence there is a need to
confirm the mass excess of S and the one-neutron separation energy of
Cl, which have both come from a single measurement. Finally, our results
were compared to ab initio calculations from the valence-space in-medium
similarity renormalization group, resulting in a good agreement.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Breakdown of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation for the A = 20 and 21 Multiplets
Using the Penning trap mass spectrometer TITAN, we performed the first direct
mass measurements of 20,21Mg, isotopes that are the most proton-rich members of
the A = 20 and A = 21 isospin multiplets. These measurements were possible
through the use of a unique ion-guide laser ion source, a development that
suppressed isobaric contamination by six orders of magnitude. Compared to the
latest atomic mass evaluation, we find that the mass of 21Mg is in good
agreement but that the mass of 20Mg deviates by 3{\sigma}. These measurements
reduce the uncertainties in the masses of 20,21Mg by 15 and 22 times,
respectively, resulting in a significant departure from the expected behavior
of the isobaric multiplet mass equation in both the A = 20 and A = 21
multiplets. This presents a challenge to shell model calculations using either
the isospin non-conserving USDA/B Hamiltonians or isospin non-conserving
interactions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon forces.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Near-infrared rechargeable glass-based composites for green persistent luminescence
The fabrication of Yb3+, Tm3+ co-doped oxyfluorophosphate glass-based composites, with green persistent luminescence after being charged with near-infrared light, is demonstrated. The mechanism responsible for the green afterglow after near-infrared illumination is unveiled. The composite is prepared using a modified melting process to limit the evaporation of fluorine during melting. Intense (blue and ultraviolet) up-conversion emission is obtained by optimizing the Yb2O3 and Tm2O3 concentrations. A heat treatment promotes volume precipitation of Yb3+, Tm3+ co-doped CaF2 crystals. Although the intensity of the blue up-conversion emission from the Tm3+ 1G4 level is lower in the highly Yb3+-concentrated glass-ceramic due to reverse energy transfer from Tm3+ to Yb3+, the heat treatment leads to an increase of the intensity of the emissions around 346 nm, 361 nm nm and 450 nm coming from the Tm3+ 1I6 and 1D2 levels. By combining the Yb3+ and Tm3+ ions with SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+crystals, green afterglow can be obtained after charging with near-infrared light.</p

Defining Seropositivity Thresholds for Use in Trachoma Elimination Studies.
BACKGROUND: Efforts are underway to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem by 2020. Programmatic guidelines are based on clinical signs that correlate poorly with Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) infection in post-treatment and low-endemicity settings. Age-specific seroprevalence of anti Ct Pgp3 antibodies has been proposed as an alternative indicator of the need for intervention. To standardise the use of these tools, it is necessary to develop an analytical approach that performs reproducibly both within and between studies. METHODOLOGY: Dried blood spots were collected in 2014 from children aged 1-9 years in Laos (n = 952) and Uganda (n = 2700) and from people aged 1-90 years in The Gambia (n = 1868). Anti-Pgp3 antibodies were detected by ELISA. A number of visual and statistical analytical approaches for defining serological status were compared. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Seroprevalence was estimated at 11.3% (Laos), 13.4% (Uganda) and 29.3% (The Gambia) by visual inspection of the inflection point. The expectation-maximisation algorithm estimated seroprevalence at 10.4% (Laos), 24.3% (Uganda) and 29.3% (The Gambia). Finite mixture model estimates were 15.6% (Laos), 17.1% (Uganda) and 26.2% (The Gambia). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis using a threshold calibrated against external reference specimens estimated the seroprevalence at 6.7% (Laos), 6.8% (Uganda) and 20.9% (The Gambia) when the threshold was set to optimise Youden's J index. The ROC curve analysis was found to estimate seroprevalence at lower levels than estimates based on thresholds established using internal reference data. Thresholds defined using internal reference threshold methods did not vary substantially between population samples. CONCLUSIONS: Internally calibrated approaches to threshold specification are reproducible and consistent and thus have advantages over methods that require external calibrators. We propose that future serological analyses in trachoma use a finite mixture model or expectation-maximisation algorithm as a means of setting the threshold for ELISA data. This will facilitate standardisation and harmonisation between studies and eliminate the need to establish and maintain a global calibration standard
Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants affected in vacuole assembly or vacuolar H+-ATPase are hypersensitive to lead (Pb) toxicity
Lead is an important environmental pollutant. The role of vacuole, in Pb detoxification, was studied using a vacuolar protein sorting mutant strain (vps16Δ), belonging to class C mutants. Cells disrupted in VPS16 gene, did not display a detectable vacuolar-like structure. Based on the loss of cell proliferation capacity, it was found that cells from vps16Δ mutant exhibited a hypersensitivity to Pb-induced toxicity, compared to wild type (WT) strain. The function of vacuolar H+-ATPase (V-ATPase), in Pb detoxification, was evaluated using mutants with structurally normal vacuoles but defective in subunits of catalytic (vma1Δ or vma2Δ) or membrane domain (vph1Δ or vma3Δ) of V-ATPase. All mutants tested, lacking a functional V-ATPase, displayed an increased susceptibility to Pb, comparatively to cells from WT strain. Modification of vacuolar morphology, in Pb-exposed cells, was visualized using a Vma2p-GFP strain. The treatment of yeast cells with Pb originated the fusion of the medium size vacuolar lobes into one enlarged vacuole. In conclusion, it was found that vacuole plays an important role in the detoxification of Pb in Saccharomyces cerevisiae; in addition, a functional V-ATPase was required for Pb compartmentalization. The authors thank the Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia (FCT) through the Portuguese Government for their financial support of this work through the grant PEST-OE/EQB/LA0023/2011 to IBB
