15 GHz Monitoring of Gamma-ray Blazars with the OVRO 40 Meter Telescope in Support of Fermi
We present results from the first two years of our fast-cadence 15 GHz
gamma-ray blazar monitoring program, part of the F-GAMMA radio monitoring
project. Our sample includes the 1158 blazars north of -20 degrees declination
from the Candidate Gamma-Ray Blazar Survey (CGRaBS), which encompasses a
significant fraction of the extragalactic sources detected by the Fermi
Gamma-ray Space Telescope. We introduce a novel likelihood analysis for
computing a time series variability amplitude statistic that separates
intrinsic variability from measurement noise and produces a quantitative error
estimate. We use this method to characterize our radio light curves. We also
present results indicating a statistically significant correlation between

Singularities and Avalanches in Interface Growth with Quenched Disorder
A simple model for an interface moving in a disordered medium is presented.
The model exhibits a transition between the two universality classes of
interface growth phenomena. Using this model, it is shown that the application
of constraints to the local slopes of the interface produces avalanches of
growth, that become relevant in the vicinity of the depinning transition. The
study of these avalanches reveals a singular behavior that explains a recently

Renormalization Group Analysis of a Noisy Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation
We have analyzed the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with a stochastic noise
term through a dynamic renormalization group calculation. For a system in which
the lattice spacing is smaller than the typical wavelength of the linear
instability occurring in the system, the large-distance and long-time behavior
of this equation is the same as for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in one and
two spatial dimensions. For the case the agreement is only qualitative.
On the other hand, when coarse-graining on larger scales the asymptotic flow

Scaling properties of driven interfaces in disordered media
We perform a systematic study of several models that have been proposed for
the purpose of understanding the motion of driven interfaces in disordered
media. We identify two distinct universality classes: (i) One of these,
referred to as directed percolation depinning (DPD), can be described by a
Langevin equation similar to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, but with
quenched disorder. (ii) The other, referred to as quenched Edwards-Wilkinson
(QEW), can be described by a Langevin equation similar to the Edwards-Wilkinson
equation but with quenched disorder. We find that for the DPD universality
class the coefficient of the nonlinear term diverges at the depinning
transition, while for the QEW universality class either or
as the depinning transition is approached. The identification
of the two universality classes allows us to better understand many of the
results previously obtained experimentally and numerically. However, we find
that some results cannot be understood in terms of the exponents obtained for
the two universality classes {\it at\/} the depinning transition. In order to
understand these remaining disagreements, we investigate the scaling properties
of models in each of the two universality classes {\it above\/} the depinning
transition. For the DPD universality class, we find for the roughness exponent
for the pinned phase, and
for the moving phase. For the growth exponent, we find for the pinned phase, and for the moving phase.
Furthermore, we find an anomalous scaling of the prefactor of the width on the
driving force. A new exponent , characterizing the

Velocity fluctuations in forced Burgers turbulence
We propose a simple method to compute the velocity difference statistics in
forced Burgers turbulence in any dimension. Within a reasonnable assumption
concerning the nucleation and coalescence of shocks, we find in particular that
the `left' tail of the distribution decays as an inverse square power, which is
compatible with numerical data. Our results are compared to those of various

Noisy Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for an erosion model
We derive the continuum equation for a discrete model for ion sputtering. We
follow an approach based on the master equation, and discuss how it can be
truncated to a Fokker-Planck equation and mapped to a discrete Langevin
equation. By taking the continuum limit, we arrive at the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky

Inter-rater reliability of the EPUAP pressure ulcer classification system using photographs
Background. Many classification systems for grading pressure ulcers are discussed in the literature. Correct identification and classification of a pressure ulcer is important for accurate reporting of the magnitude of the problem, and for timely prevention. The reliability of pressure ulcer classification systems has rarely been tested. Aims and objectives. The purpose of this paper is to examine the inter-rater reliability of classifying pressure ulcers according to the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel classification system when using pressure ulcer photographs.Design. Survey was among pressure ulcer experts.Methods. Fifty-six photographs were presented to 44 pressure ulcer experts. The experts classified the lesions as normal skin, blanchable erythema, pressure ulcer (four grades) or incontinence lesion. Inter-rater reliability was calculated.Results. The multirater-Kappa for the entire group of experts was 0.80 (P < 0.001).Various groups of experts obtained comparable results. Differences in classifications are mainly limited to 1 degree of difference. Incontinence lesions are most often confused with grade 2 (blisters) and grade 3 pressure ulcers (superficial pressure ulcers).Conclusions. The inter-rater reliability of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel classification appears to be good for the assessment of photographs by experts. The difference between an incontinence lesion and a blister or a superficial pressure ulcer does not always seem clear.Relevance to clinical practice. The ability to determine correctly whether a lesion is a pressure ulcer lesion is important to assess the effectiveness of preventive measures. In addition, the ability to make a correct distinction between pressure ulcers and incontinence lesions is important as they require different preventive measures. A faulty classification leads to mistaken measures and negative results. Photographs can be used as a practice instrument to learn to discern pressure ulcers from incontinence lesions and to get to know the different grades of pressure ulcers. 'I like being a lab rat': Student experiences of research participation
Undergraduate students are often expected to be participants in academic research. However, decisions relating to student participation in research are typically based on speculation or educator assumptions rather than a solid research base. We conducted three studies to investigate student experiences of research participation. These included online surveys (Study 1), semi-structured interviews (Study 2), and analysis of reflective essays (Study 3). A range of pedagogic and ethical issues were considered including motivation to participate, distress, and the educational value of participation. Findings suggest that the experience provides students with important opportunities to learn about research methodology and ethical issues which inform their own research practice. Further, students cite additional non-academic benefits of research participation such as self-discovery and networking opportunities. Negative experiences typically consisted of nervousness prior to the first laboratory study or boredom, though for some students (e.g. those uncomfortable in social situations) engagement in research may lead to anxiety. We conclude that participation in research has pedagogic value to students, and educators should promote those elements of the research experience (e.g. critiquing studies, networking with researchers) that are most beneficial. However, researchers and educators should also actively work to reduce apprehension and minimise potential distress
Nebuliser therapy in the intensive care unit
The relationship between identity, lived experience, sexual practices and the language through which these are conveyed has been widely debated in sexuality literature. For example, ‘coming out’ has famously been conceptualised as a ‘speech act’ (Sedgwick 1990) and as a collective narrative (Plummer 1995), while a growing concern for individuals’ diverse identifications in relations to their sexual and gender practices has produced interesting research focusing on linguistic practices among LGBT-identified individuals (Leap 1995; Kulick 2000; Cameron and Kulick 2006; Farqhar 2000). While an explicit focus on language remains marginal to literature on sexualities (Kulick 2000), issue of language use and translation are seldom explicitly addressed in the growing literature on intersectionality. Yet intersectional perspectives ‘reject the separability of analytical and identity categories’ (McCall 2005:1771), and therefore have an implicit stake in the ‘vernacular’ language of the researched, in the ‘scientific’ language of the researcher and in the relationship of continuity between the two. Drawing on literature within gay and lesbian/queer studies and cross-cultural studies, this chapter revisits debates on sexuality, language and intersectionality. I argue for the importance of giving careful consideration to the language we choose to use as researchers to collectively define the people whose experiences we try to capture. I also propose that language itself can be investigated as a productive way to foreground how individual and collective identifications are discursively constructed, and to unpack the diversity of lived experience. I address intersectional complexity as a methodological issue, where methodology is understood not only as the methods and practicalities of doing research, but more broadly as ‘a coherent set of ideas about the philosophy, methods and data that underlie the research process and the production of knowledge’ (McCall 2005:1774). My points are illustrated with examples drawn from my ethnographic study on ‘lesbian’ identity in urban Russia, interspersed with insights from existing literature. In particular, I aim to show that an explicit focus on language can be a productive way to explore the intersections between the global, the national and the local in cross-cultural research on sexuality, while also addressing issues of positionality and accountability to the communities researched
Unsettling planning theory
Recent political developments in many parts of the world seem likely to exacerbate rather than ameliorate the planetary-scale challenges of social polarization, inequality and environmental change societies face. In this unconventional multi-authored essay, we therefore seek to explore some of the ways in which planning theory might respond to the deeply unsettling times we live in. Taking the multiple, suggestive possibilities of the theme of unsettlement as a starting point, we aim to create space for reflection and debate about the state of the discipline and practice of planning theory, questioning what it means to produce knowledge capable of acting on the world today. Drawing on exchanges at a workshop attended by a group of emerging scholars in Portland, Oregon in late 2016, the essay begins with an introduction section exploring the contemporary resonances of ‘unsettling’ in, of and for planning theory. This is followed by four, individually authored responses which each connect the idea of unsettlement to key challenges and possible future directions. We end by calling for a reflective practice of theorizing that accepts unsettlement but seeks to act knowingly and compassionately on the uneven terrain that it creates
