Central galaxy growth and feedback in the most massive nearby cool core cluster
We present multi-wavelength observations of the centre of RXCJ1504.1-0248 -
the galaxy cluster with the most luminous and relatively nearby cool core at
z~0.2. Although there are several galaxies within 100 kpc of the cluster core,
only the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), which lies at the peak of the X-ray
emission, has blue colours and strong line-emission. Approximately 80 Msun/yr
of intracluster gas is cooling below X-ray emitting temperatures, similar to
the observed UV star formation rate of ~140 Msun/yr. Most star formation occurs
in the core of the BCG and in a 42 kpc long filament of blue continuum, line
emission, and X-ray emission, that extends southwest of the galaxy. The
surrounding filamentary nebula is the most luminous around any observed BCG.
The number of ionizing stars in the BCG is barely sufficient to ionize and heat
the nebula, and the line ratios indicate an additional heat source is needed.
This heat source can contribute to the H\alpha-deduced star formation rates
(SFRs) in BCGs and therefore the derived SFRs should only be considered upper
limits. AGN feedback can slow down the cooling flow to the observed mass
deposition rate if the black hole accretion rate is of the order of 0.5 Msun/yr
at 10% energy output efficiency. The average turbulent velocity of the nebula
is vturb ~325 km/s which, if shared by the hot gas, limits the ratio of
turbulent to thermal energy of the intracluster medium to less than 6%.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS in press. Corrected typo in abstract

Measurements of I/SVOCs in biomass-burning smoke using solid-phase extraction disks and two-dimensional gas chromatography
Biomass-burning organic-aerosol (OA) emissions are known to exhibit semi-volatile behavior that impacts OA loading during plume transport. Because such semi-volatile behavior depends in part on OA composition, improved speciation of intermediate and semi-volatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs) emitted during fires is needed to assess the competing effects of primary OA volatilization and secondary OA production. In this study, 18 laboratory fires were sampled in which a range of fuel types were burned. Emitted I/SVOCs were collected onto Teflon filters and solid-phase extraction (SPE) disks to qualitatively characterize particulate and gaseous I/SVOCs, respectively. Derivatized filter extracts were analyzed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). Quality control tests were performed using biomass-burning relevant standards and demonstrate the utility of SPE disks for untargeted analysis of air samples. The observed chromatographic profiles of I/SVOCs in coniferous fuel-derived smoke samples were well correlated with each other, but poorly correlated with other fuel types (e.g., herbaceous and chaparral fuels). Emissions of benzenediol isomers were also shown to be fuel dependent. The combined Teflon and SPE filter data captured differences in gas-particle partitioning of the benzenediol isomers, with hydroquinone having a significantly higher particle-phase fraction than catechol due to its lower volatility. Additionally, the speciated volatility distribution of I/SVOCs in smoke from a rotten-log fire was estimated to evaluate the composition of potentially volatilized primary OA, which was entirely attributed to oxygenated (or other heteroatomic) compounds. The isomer-dependent partitioning and the speciated volatility distributions both suggest the need for better understanding of gas-phase and heterogenous reaction pathways of biomass-burning-derived I/SVOCs in order to represent the atmospheric chemistry of smoke in models
EFFECT OF THE 1985 FARM BILL PROVISIONS ON FARMERS' SOIL CONSERVATION DECISIONS
Conservation initiatives in the 1985 Farm Bill affected farmers' decisions regarding soil conservation. A farmer survey was conducted and a multiperiod mixed-integer programming model was developed to determine an optimal farm plan with choice of crop-tillage combinations and land retirement. Results indicate that farmers' incentives to reduce soil loss in the Sand Mountain region in Alabama are not substantially affected by provisions of the 1985 Farm Bill. The bid price for the Conservation Reserve Program will have to be considerably higher than 1988 levels to provide an incentive to remove land from production.Agricultural and Food Policy,
Electron Power-Law Spectra in Solar and Space Plasmas
Particles are accelerated to very high, non-thermal energies in solar and
space plasma environments. While energy spectra of accelerated electrons often
exhibit a power law, it remains unclear how electrons are accelerated to high
energies and what processes determine the power-law index . Here, we
review previous observations of the power-law index in a variety of
different plasma environments with a particular focus on sub-relativistic
electrons. It appears that in regions more closely related to magnetic
reconnection (such as the `above-the-looptop' solar hard X-ray source and the
plasma sheet in Earth's magnetotail), the spectra are typically soft ( 4). This is in contrast to the typically hard spectra ( 4) that are observed in coincidence with shocks. The difference
implies that shocks are more efficient in producing a larger non-thermal
fraction of electron energies when compared to magnetic reconnection. A caveat
is that during active times in Earth's magnetotail, values seem
spatially uniform in the plasma sheet, while power-law distributions still
exist even in quiet times. The role of magnetotail reconnection in the electron
power-law formation could therefore be confounded with these background
conditions. Because different regions have been studied with different
instrumentations and methodologies, we point out a need for more systematic and
coordinated studies of power-law distributions for a better understanding of

Cold gas in the Intra Cluster Medium: implications for flow dynamics and powering optical nebulae
We show that the mechanical energy injection rate generated as the
intra-cluster medium (ICM) flows around cold clouds may be sufficient to power
the optical and near infra-red emission of nebulae observed in the central
regions of a sample of seven galaxy clusters. The energy injection rate is
extremely sensitive to the velocity difference between the ICM and cold clouds,
which may help to explain why optical and infra-red luminosity is often larger
than expected in systems containing AGNs. We also find that mass recycling is
likely to be important for the dynamics of the ICM. This effect will be
strongest in the central regions of clusters where there is more than enough
cold gas for its evaporation to contribute significantly to the density of the

Framework for software architecture visualization assessment.
In order to assess software architecture visualisation strategies, we qualitatively characterize then construct an assessment framework with 7 key areas and 31 features. The framework is used for evaluation and comparison of various strategies from multiple stakeholder perspectives. Six existing software architecture visualisation tools and a seventh research tool were evaluated. All
tools exhibited shortcomings when evaluated in the framework

A description and the design requirements for the 200 MWe (nominal) net output MHD Engineering Test Facility (ETF) Conceptual Design, are presented. Performance requirements for the plant are identified and process conditions are indicated at interface stations between the major systems comprising the plant.
