PROMPT RADIATION EFFECTS ON CABLES AND LINEAR POWER INSTRUMENTATION CHANNELS
Tests were conducted to determine the amount of error introduced in reactor power data by radiation-induced voltages in cables and electrometer preamplifier chassis. The results, obtained near the central exposure facility of the KEWB (Reacter Safety Experiments), showed no observable radiation effects under the conditions of present use. Cable insulation resistance was measured during the radiation bursts. (C.J.G.
D-Type Cyclins in Development and Disease
D-type cyclins encode G1/S cell cycle checkpoint proteins, which play a crucial role in defining cell cycle exit and progression. Precise control of cell cycle exit is vital during embryonic development, with defects in the pathways regulating intracellular D-type cyclins resulting in abnormal initiation of stem cell differentiation in a variety of different organ systems. Furthermore, stabilisation of D-type cyclins is observed in a wide range of disorders characterized by cellular over-proliferation, including cancers and overgrowth disorders. In this review, we will summarize and compare the roles played by each D-type cyclin during development and provide examples of how their intracellular dysregulation can be an underlying cause of disease
A Knob for Changing Light Propagation from Subluminal to Superluminal
We show how the application of a coupling field connecting the two lower
metastable states of a lambda-system can produce a variety of new results on
the propagation of a weak electromagnetic pulse. In principle the light
propagation can be changed from subluminal to superluminal. The negative group
index results from the regions of anomalous dispersion and gain in
susceptibility.Comment: 6 pages,5 figures, typed in RevTeX, accepted in Phys. Rev.
Genome-wide analyses of Liberibacter species provides insights into evolution, phylogenetic relationships, and virulence factors.
'Candidatus Liberibacter' species are insect-transmitted, phloem-limited α-Proteobacteria in the order of Rhizobiales. The citrus industry is facing significant challenges due to huanglongbing, associated with infection from 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (Las). In order to gain greater insight into 'Ca. Liberibacter' biology and genetic diversity, we have performed genome sequencing and comparative analyses of diverse 'Ca. Liberibacter' species, including those that can infect citrus. Our phylogenetic analysis differentiates 'Ca. Liberibacter' species and Rhizobiales in separate clades and suggests stepwise evolution from a common ancestor splitting first into nonpathogenic Liberibacter crescens followed by diversification of pathogenic 'Ca. Liberibacter' species. Further analysis of Las genomes from different geographical locations revealed diversity among isolates from the United States. Our phylogenetic study also indicates multiple Las introduction events in California and spread of the pathogen from Florida to Texas. Texan Las isolates were closely related, while Florida and Asian isolates exhibited the most genetic variation. We have identified conserved Sec translocon (SEC)-dependent effectors likely involved in bacterial survival and virulence of Las and analysed their expression in their plant host (citrus) and insect vector (Diaphorina citri). Individual SEC-dependent effectors exhibited differential expression patterns between host and vector, indicating that Las uses its effector repertoire to differentially modulate diverse organisms. Collectively, this work provides insights into the evolution of 'Ca. Liberibacter' species, the introduction of Las in the United States and identifies promising Las targets for disease management
Brane Decay of a (4+n)-Dimensional Rotating Black Hole. II: spin-1 particles
The present works complements and expands a previous one, focused on the
emission of scalar fields by a (4+n)-dimensional rotating black hole on the
brane, by studying the emission of gauge fields on the brane from a similar
black hole. A comprehensive analysis of the particle, energy and angular
momentum emission rates is undertaken, for arbitrary angular momentum of the
black hole and dimensionality of spacetime. Our analysis reveals the existence
of a number of distinct features associated with the emission of spin-1 fields
from a rotating black hole on the brane, such as the behaviour and magnitude of
the different emission rates, the angular distribution of particles and energy,
the relative enhancement compared to the scalar fields, and the magnitude of
the superradiance effect. Apart from their theoretical interest, these features
can comprise clear signatures of the emission of Hawking radiation from a
brane-world black hole during its spin-down phase upon successful detection of
this effect during an experiment.Comment: 35 pages, 19 figures, Latex fil
Superluminal optical pulse propagation in nonlinear coherent media
The propagation of light-pulse with negative group-velocity in a nonlinear
medium is studied theoretically. We show that the necessary conditions for
these effects to be observable are realized in a three-level -system
interacting with a linearly polarized laser beam in the presence of a static
magnetic field. In low power regime, when all other nonlinear processes are
negligible, the light-induced Zeeman coherence cancels the resonant absorption
of the medium almost completely, but preserves the dispersion anomalous and
very high. As a result, a superluminal light pulse propagation can be observed
in the sense that the peak of the transmitted pulse exits the medium before the
peak of the incident pulse enters. There is no violation of causality and
energy conservation. Moreover, the superluminal effects are prominently
manifested in the reshaping of pulse, which is caused by the
intensity-dependent pulse velocity. Unlike the shock wave formation in a
nonlinear medium with normal dispersion, here, the self-steepening of the pulse
trailing edge takes place due to the fact that the more intense parts of the
pulse travel slower. The predicted effect can be easily observed in the well
known schemes employed for studying of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation. The
upper bound of sample length is found from the criterion that the pulse
self-steepening and group-advance time are observable without pulse distortion
caused by the group-velocity dispersion.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Stuffed Rare Earth Pyrochlore Solid Solutions
Synthesis and crystal structures are described for the compounds
Ln2(Ti2-xLnx)O7-x/2, where Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and x ranges from 0
to 0.67. Rietveld refinements on X-ray powder diffraction data indicate that in
Tb and Dy titanate pyrochlores, extra Ln3+ cations mix mainly on the Ti4+ site
with little disorder on the original Ln3+ site. For the smaller rare earths
(Ho-Lu), stuffing additional lanthanide ions results in a pyrochlore to defect
fluorite transition, where the Ln3+ and Ti4+ ions become completely randomized
at the maximum (x=0.67). In all of these Ln-Ti-O pyrochlores, the addition of
magnetic Ln3+ in place of nonmagnetic Ti4+ adds edge sharing tetrahedral spin
interactions to a normally corner sharing tetrahedral network of spins. The
increase in spin connectivity in this family of solid solutions represents a
new avenue for investigating geometrical magnetic frustration in the rare earth
titanate pyrochlores.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, submitted to J. Solid State Che
New York: the animated city
The urban landscape of New York City is one that is familiar to many, but, through the medium of animation, this familiarity has been consistently challenged. Often metamorphic, and always meticulously constructed, animated imagery encourages reflective thinking. Focusing on the themes of construction, destruction, and interactivity, this article seeks to cast critical light upon the animated double life that New York City has lived through the following moving image texts: Disneyâs Fantasia 2000 (1999), Patrick Jeanâs computer-generated short Pixels (2009), and Rockstar Gamesâ open-world blockbuster Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
